What a bitchin' mill in the Nash! Sounds incredible too, and yes, it's design is highly unique.
Glad to finally learn more about it. Thanks!
Oh yeah. The (fiber)Glasspar '52 Woodill Wildfire was built on a modified Kiaser Henry J like the Darrin. There must be some common history there, I would think. Also a little known '53 'Skyline' 2 seater made from a cut down Henry J body.

Mike Stowe got it wrong: According to Geoffrey Healey, Donald Healey and George Mason met on the ocean liner Queen Elizabeth, as Healey was on his way to meeting Cadillac in the hope of getting their new V8 for his cars. Mason said Cadillac was not able to make enough of those even for their own use, but he's welcome to visit Kenosha to see what Nash could offer. Nash was getting a bit stuffy at the time and wanted to get their image up again, Healey did a lot of work as they found the Nash engine a bit pedestrian. The first version was almost all Healey's work including body design, incorporating the traditional Nash grill and very English in style, but a year later Nash commissioned Pininfarina to design a new body as seen here.

I always thought that the Kaiser had the coolest doors of any car and it’s a shame other companies didn’t copy them.

When I was kid growing up in Kailua, Hawai'i I had friends in the next town over of Waimanalo, and I remember in the front yard of one of these Waimanalo homes sat an old neglected Kaiser Darrrin. I recall the tiny grill, and pocket doors. I thought "what a cool, unusual car." I must have been 16 years old at the time. I wonder what ever happened to that car, this was 44 years ago.

Probably a little pile of rust by now. Hopefully the owner realized the value and got it into a climate stabilized building before that happened in that hot, humid and possibly salt laden climate.

Donald Healy met George Mason on an Ocean Liner, I believe the SS United States and discussed the concept during the 3 day crossing the United States was famous for. That was I believe in 1952. George Mason, President of Nash was quite a rotund man and died in 1954

Kaiser shipyards during WWII invented a method for producing "liberty ships" that could be built in 2 weeks or less - one was finished in 5 days. Henry J. helped win the war by building ships cheap & fast.

Continental did not build the engine for the Kaiser Darrin. It uses the Willys 161 cu. in. F-head engine. Kaiser had bought Willys. Same engine as my 1954 Willys Aero Lark.

Those pocket doors would be cool if you rigged up some pneumatic cylinders so they could be opened super fast with the push of a button. Pull up to the valet and just Star Trek the doors open like a boss👌

Why didn't Kaiser at least put in the supercharged 226 flathead instead of the 161 Willys F head? Darrin installed Cadillac V8 engines in a few.

  • @antiplanner

Funny you say the Kaiser Darrin was a "chick magnet." Henry J. Kaiser didn't want to build the car, but his wife Alyce liked it. In the Kaiser family, what Alyce wanted, Alyce got.

A wealthy friend had one of these for a toy someone gave him an engine and transmission from a Mustang he had it installed and rear axle too weak, a friend at Dana made him an axle then if you wanted to pass another car you had to change lanes and straighten your car or the car would spin out when you stepped on the gas
