- In this video I will explain how to change the transmission fluid in any 3 speed automatic Pontiac Sunfire or Chevy Cavalier from 1995-2002. Check to make sure you have the 2200 engine, and the 3 speed auto. 3 speed auto has a 16 bolt pan, 4 speed auto has a 12 bolt pan.
Transmission fluid is the hydraulic fluid that runs in the transmission's torque converter to power the gears. Over time, this fluid will become dirty with metal shavings and begin to turn black. This makes the fluid thick, and it can damage the moving parts of the transmission, potentially putting you $1,000 in for a transmission rebuild. Changing the fluid and the filter every 75,000 miles or so will help prolong the life of your transmission and the overall health of your vehicle. Please note, if your transmission fluid is already black, you may have waited too long. The thickness of the fluid may be the only thing that allows the transmission to function. The transmission will likely fail once you replace the fluid with clean fluid since it won't have enough friction to move the gears. Fluid should be red or dark red/brown when it's time to change. If your fluid is black, your transmission is running on borrowed time, and you'd probably be better off driving it until it fails.
Very helpful video. Thank you. I have a 94 Sunbird Coupe 2.0 and a 97 Sunfire Coupe 2.2 both with 3 speeds.
Nice job 👍 but I’ll give you a little tip so you don’t have that god awful mess to clean up afterwards, for any vehicle. there’s usually a spot of the pan that makes a corner or a curve shape. Start cracking bolts lose there at the corner shape working your way backwards. You want to loosen the bolts so that “corner” shape drops down lower. It guides the fluid so you’ll have a bit of control and way less mess. Be patient when fluid starts to come out, stop let it drain. It stops, loosen more bolts let drain repeat. It’s funny cause I actually have to do this job on my wife’s car, possibly today. I’ll shoot a video 😉
That's really good to know! I appreciate the advice!
Killer video bro thanks
Thank you
I have a 2000 Sunfire and the manual says if you just drop the pan it will only require 4 quarts?
Nice tutorial! ;)
Yeah it's a messy job. I have an '01 Sunfire and I've changed it twice but last time was about 10 years ago, so it's due.
Smoking like my coworkers😂
U Def helped, Ty sirr!
