- How to Make a Wildlife Pond for Pondlife and Nature in your Garden. A guide to creating a wildlife habitat to rewild your garden.
First choose the best location for your pond, ideally away from main roads or footpaths, not constantly in direct sunlight but also not to near mature trees which may drop leaves. Near a mature evergreen hedge is a good place, the hedge provides shelter for wildlife but also acts as a wildlife corridor and a place for birds to nest.
Try to make your pond as big as possible, you won’t regret it, but any size body of water will encourage wildlife and help biodiversity.
Try not to be too tidy in the garden, wildlife loves places to his like long grass and piles of twigs or sticks. I’ve made a log pile and a hibernaculum, Also, plenty of piles of organic waste.
Dig the hole as deep as possible, this stops the water freezing during winter. Various depths also caters for different elements of nature and encourages biodiversity. So have layers of varying depths, like ‘shelves’ around the margins of the pond. This will give you places to put pond plants.
www.pondkeeper.co.uk were very supportive with me in my pond construction and I would recommend them. (They also have a helpline with real people).

Wonderful area, I intend to refer to the videos of how you made the habitats for years to come. I call plant 1 Mare's Tail.
Or upright milfoil.
Hippuris Vulgaris🙂
A couple of the things you have are very thuggy and will need some control to keep the lovely balance you have. This is a very nice area and so wildlife friendly. Wonderful.
I love seeing all these plants in their native environment. I live in Canada, and a lot of these plants are invasive where I grew up, such as the butterfly bush which has taken over the local river area, and foxgloves, which pop up anywhere the soil is disturbed. I'd love to see a similar setup in western Canada, for comparison.
Thanks you. And hello Canada! Really appreciate you watching. Mark
