U.S. stocks are expected to get a short-term boost in the aftermath of the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump over the weekend, as analysts say the likelihood of his victory in November has increased. Trump's lead has extended itself since Biden's poor debate performance two weeks ago which left his biggest supporters concerned about the president's ability to handle the rigors of another four years in office.
Will the stock market do better under Trump or Biden?

Otherwise known as "Click repellent".
29:45 There was a Heritage Foundation event in April of 2022, where Trump spoke on video, and the former president stated the policies of Heritage were aligned with the wider movement. I believe he was directly linking Heritage Foundation's goals with that of his campaign and prospective administration. Based on the language choice I agree, he has no idea what the foundation's goals are, but he has made a public commitment to them in the past.
Yep this video needed way more on the Christian Coalition. Esp with the references to Reagan.
dude he wanted money. "public commitments" are lip service in politics
Yes. I believe that, while Trump may want to disavow many aspects of Project 2025, the possibility of consolidating more power in his person and having the foundations of government (the administrative state) directly loyal to him, would blind him to implementation of the project by those around him who would seek (and I believe succeed) in controlling him through flattery. While Biden certainly has mental issues, I don't believe that Trump is the picture of mental health either. His own narcissism could prove to be the Achilles heel that allows him to be manipulated by his "aids".
Trump doesn't know the Heritage Foundation, Jean Carroll, or Stormy Daniels.
We should believe the cult leader even when photos and witnesses say otherwise.
Trump's first presidency also tested the waters on some of the more insane things the heritage foundation is recommending, like schedule f. Patrick needed to do more research on this.

If I lived anywhere else in the world, I would agree.
Stocks have prefered a gridlock where no party controls the presidency and both houses of Congress.
No, the market prefers certainty. Uncertainty drives selling.
@@edwardloomis887 That is the point. Gridlock is certainty. Nothing gets done so the future looks like the present. There is obviously data about this. The highest returns since 1928 are under Democratic president with a split congress then Democratic president with a full Republican congress. Democrat/Democrat is toward the middle, and Repub/Repub is by far the worst.
If neither party can push policy, then you get certainty that nothing will happen, yes?
You missed the part where it does better under a democratic president.
Stocks are not a collective that all think similarly.
So, what I hear as the most important take-away is that, regardless of who is elected, the limitations which will impact their presidency will hamper their effectiveness to do either any lasting benefit or damage to the economy. The market will ultimately take care of itself and it's best to stand by a simple long-term strategy (e.g. maintaining one's contributions to a 401k).
One of my concerns, however, which Patrick did not address, is a possible politicization of the Fed by a Republican administration. I don't believe that the dollar is going away as the reserve currency anytime soon, but blatant manipulation of our currency would definitely contribute to its slide. Add to this, political grandstanding on the debt ceiling and things start looking even worse for the dollar.
Another point that Patrick did touch on is Trump's statement about tariffs. I heard that he wants to abolish federal income tax by raising tariffs on all goods coming into the country. I read somewhere that, to accomplish the lowering of taxes that Trump envisions, we would need to impose an 85% tariff on all goods resulting in massive inflation.
I'm not really sure of what Trump's vision is, but the vision for the country of Project 2025 is disturbing. Trump has disavowed it. I'm not sure that I trust that.
He is connected to it absolutely 😂
Well, with presidential immunity and the fact that Trump has no platform this year, I am not as skeptical about Project 2025. Unitary Executive Theory, that SCOTUS will not prevent, will give him unforeseen powers and to install his own loyalists into key administrative state positions. In theory, I don't see it as impossible that Alex Jones ends up running the FDA or Sarah Huckabee's Christian scientists running the USDA and poultry inspections. Minimally, it's going to be a bank heist, since I have a lot of reasons to believe that the GOP is a smokescreen for white collar criminality and not for "Christian nationalism." At worst though, we could end up with a banana republic government like Augusto Pinochet's, and there is a long history of the GOP intellectual underbelly having ties to him and to the Austrian School of Economics. One could accuse me of being overworried, but I'd counter that I wouldn't want any POTUS with Unitary Executive powers, much less one whose entire life has been about passing the buck of his externalities onto everyone else, then writing a white collar crime self-confessional like "Art of the Deal." Far from being a standard contest like in 2016, the stakes are institutionally important this time. Trump and his friends could pull a heist on the American people for which they might have immunity, and Biden might be packing SCOTUS as a way to overturn Unitary Executive Theory (and Dobbs).

I emailed a WSJ journalist for a definition of left and right as he used the terms so freely in describing the UK and French elections. These terms are not what they used to be. He never replied.
Different countries have different political leanings, thus left in country A might be more right in country B. The US tends to be quite right, so many countries tend to be left in comparison
@@cocguvnor1373 I understand but please define left and right in a country- your choice. US, Germany, South Africa, France
The best description is "the political compass", which is not just a one-dimensional left and right line, there's a 2nd dimension, that includes an authoritarian vs libertarian measure. Trump appears to be far right and authoritarian leaning. Biden is more of a centrist, not leaning either way very far in either dimension. In my view, the leaders who lean very far, left or right, authoritarian or libertarian, are always a big concern.

"...Who despite having Junior in his name is still 74 years old..." Master level deadpan.
For years I've passionately followed US politics but no more. The American willingness to disregard the moral character of their leaders is sickening.
Our reality is a symptom of disregard from both parties. The reason Trump is popular is because he's the antithesis to the classic American political class. People are desperate for any kind of change at this point and they'd rather place a bet on a lunatic even though he's taking advantage of their desperation to advance his personal agendas.
It doesn't help that the other party is hellbent on making sure a particular line continues in power disregarding the will of its own base. Biden was never a popular choice and he still isn't but that's what the party leadership decided we should have (and the courts ruled in 2017 they can do this because parties are private entities and may conduct their internal elective processes however they see fit).
At this point, people have very little to do with any of this. What is actually sickening is how little the country's population has control over its own destiny.
30:24 the past three Republican presidents have raised the deficit so them saying that they don't want to raise the deficit means nothing

Are either of them going to run balanced/surplus budgets? If not, then both candidates' platforms are going to drive inflation. Stonks go moon.
the Biden administration is heading towards a balanced budget, Trumps would explode the deficit & national debt - just as he did in his first term.
One is gg to cut taxes the other increase spending lol
Neither is gg to balance the books
@@Yami0to0hikari Democrats have a long history of reducing the deficit. Trump & the GOP have always exploded it.

20:45 I think it's disingenuous to say Halliburton's stock "fell 8%" during the Bush presidency when it had the global financial crisis at the tail end. At the peak of 2008 it was up 150% since Jan 2001.
Great point.
The Halliburton example was illustrative, but the papers he cited prior are stronger evidence. Even if you disagree on the example, would you still then bet on a president positively impacting the market? If so, why?
@@seanf5134 Presidency, as mentioned, needs to be looked at in the long run and under certain conditions (multiple consecutive terms - of the same party in power), otherwise, as mentioned by Patrick, it's meaningless as macroeconomic policies affect next presidencies.
@@seanf5134 I disagree with the example because I think it proves the exact opposite point if you ignore the 2008-2009 drop. In the long term, yeah, it's down compared to SPX, which I would attribute to macroeconomic trends, over which the US (or any) president would have a lesser influence. So I don't disagree with the conclusion of the video.
Would I bet a certain president will affect the market long term? Probably not. A sector? Maybe, but I would assume the market would correct itself after their term (or their party's term) is over.
@@Trig2790 Point taken, I could see how it would be a bad illustration. It's sort of hard for me to tell because HAL is already pretty volatile, and I don't know anything about the company or the oil/gas industry. I ended up pulling up a chart, you could see a pretty big rise over the timeperiod prior to the crash against the S&P500.

It is deceptively misguided (in fact stupid) to place the high stakes of measuring candidate suitability/unsuitability for Presidential office on debate(s). First of all, politicians never follow the basic accepted rules of debate. With rules of debate ignored as they are, debates only measure the verbal agility of of the debaters; a skillful flimflam man, who incessantly lies through his teeth, and gaslights the hell out of his opponents has a distinct advantage over most would be opponents. Far more important candidate attributes such as personality (disorders), character, candor, fealty to entrusted responsibilities (the well being, Constitution/Rule-of-law and American Democracy-based operation of the Nation) are not addressed. A candidate's ability to successfully integrate executive, legislative and judicial function, working with transparent procedures that many times require candor and compromise are far more important measures for the Chief Executive but don't get probed during the debate and don't even get mentioned in the post debate analysis. The nimble liar/con-man has the advantage in the daft and deceptive ways that the press measures "the winner".
When Musk starts to point at statistics, i would start getting nervous though. I have another one one for him: Musks Salary vs his companies earnings. i think, that's 69% vs 31% too. or thereabout. But as long as "Making headlines" pumps stocks, there are enough "Investors" around, who don't understand how VALUE works. Or basically meme-stock holders, who just want to be supportive. (That usually comes with costs to THEM).
Currently, i think an exhumed Abraham Lincoln would poll better than both candidates combined. Just because it would be SENSATIONAL.

At current PE the stock market is probably going to be flat over the next decade or so. We're overdue another 1970s or 2000s period of nothing much happening. Line goes up can stop going up for a decade or two easy.

You did not comment how low Kamala got her golf handicap as a vice president, golf handicaps being a hallmark of presidential and vice-presidential greatness, independent of party affiliation.
How many Nobel economists predicted the 2008 crash, 2021-2023 inflationary explosion, etc etc. Seems people only want to listen to these experts when it suits their politics or financial preferences.
Great nuance. Interest rates, inflation, liquidity and the Fed set the pace of the economy rather than presidents. Great poins about left and right.
