I am currently working on my brother's FJ, and that is exactly what had happened. I am now going through and giving his FJ a hair cut (wires). I have eliminated and thinned out his mess. I have a box for 6 relays. Now looking for a way to clean it up even more and that is how I came across your video. Over engineered? If it works for you and you like....go for it!. I like it! My brother is overwhelmed with excitement and points it out to others every time when the hood is up. Did not go with the "key on" function. All the components/accessories connected through the relay box run from the auxiliary battery, not the start battery. While driving, the aux battery is charged by a Redarc dc to dc charger. When parked whiled camping, the aux battery is charged by the Redarc charger with solar.

    I'm sorta average and sorta not. Either way, I believe your method is not only well craftsmanship, its absolutely safe. Yes you did do more than you NEEDED; however you minagated the living shit out of an electrical accidents.
    The mistake I made was running hot and ground from my battery to a Fuse box with grounding terminals. From fuse box I connected to my switch for power which then sends signals to my accessories.
    The one I don't have is the relays whichever means I have high voltages running all the time..
    I landed on your video by mistake and I am glad I did. But now I have to redo all my wiring..... ughhhh... That's 6 switches too...... Fuck.....

      @@dironaa so, I just wanted to give you an update. I wired this in the same system you engineered with slight modification. I'll share it just in case you might be interested.
      My relay set up is the same as yours, but the relay on the inside, I'm using a 5 pin relay that has spades 87 and 87A.
      That 87A (middle spade) when the vehical is off, that spade becomes active with power. I simply tied that wire on the fuse box terminal that connects to my USB mounted switch.
      When I turn the car off, all my accessories turn off except for my USB port. When I turn my car on, spade 87A then stops power because the ignition is the switch that activates spade 87 to power up fuse box and everything on their (87A on relay then becomes closed)
      This allows me to have a USB port always active so that I can charge my phones or other USB port powered accessories such as a dash camera. 😉
      If this helps you or spark an idea for low powered devices, then great. Glad I could return a good tip as you did for me

    Low current controlling high current. Also you wouldnt want all of your power coming into the cabin that's asking for an accident plus voltage drop. Quick question why not use a breaker on the battery hot wire with the inline fuse? Maybe with slightly less amperage than the fuse is rated for? Thanks

    • @dironaa
      @dironaa  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly, just better all around. Can't say I really see the need for a breaker in combination with the fuse, any accessories that are running off this system should be drawing well below what that fuse is rated for, so if the fuse blows we've got some major problems. If we were consistently pulling amps on the verge of the fuse rating I could see using a breaker, but as of now don't plan on getting to that point. Good thought though!

      @@dironaa I put this off busy with other projects, but just came around to it. Could you explain why you put a fuse going to your fused bus for the switches. Doesnt having that fuse negate the purpose of all the fuses for the switches. You shouldn't have more than one in a circuit so I thought. Maybe instead of using the switches for power use them for grounding to complete the circuit

    Slightly confused on the fuse box in the footwell. Are you wiring the switch to the fuse box then out the fire wall to the relay box then to the accessories? I always thought the fuse was to go between the relay and the power source (battery) thanks in advance for any confusion you may clear up. Great video btw I am currently doing this to my FJ.

    • @dironaa
      @dironaa  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Youre right on both accounts. The footwell fuse box protects the wire that runs to the switch and subsequently sends power to trigger the relay (in case it gets shorted out somewhere on its journey to the relay). Each relay under the hood has its own fuse that protects the accessory that it powers. Fuses under the hood are 30 amp +/- to power the accessories. Fuses in the footwell are 2 amp, since they're only feeding power to the switches.

    I’m about to do this to my new 79 series cruiser I just want to hear your feedback on the relay box shouldn’t the blade fuses in the relay box be used for the out puts to the accessories as you already have the wire to the relays fused already with the large inline fuse from the battery ?

    • @dironaa
      @dironaa  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don’t think it matters which side of the relay that the fuse is on, as long as each accessory has its own fuse, however I would say the safer option is to fuse the accessory before power enters the relay as it will protect an extra couple inches of wire

  • @alfredoandrea8345
    @alfredoandrea8345 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Your thick red wire from the fuse line at the relay box, what post does that connect to in the relay inside your vehical? Is it post 30?
    Then you tapped power inside your vehicals switch power and ran that to the relay as well, but what post does that go to from you cars fuse box? That would be battery power when switched on so that that mean that goes to post 30 on relay?
    Than from relay you ran a small jumper to positive position on fuse box.... So is that coming from post 87?
    85 is ground. But that inside relay got me confused a bit. Please lay out what you did by labeling the post number of the relay please 🙏🙏🙏

    • @alfredoandrea8345
      @alfredoandrea8345 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      So to answer my own question, I would assumed since your circuit is switched power, you would connect your add-a-fuse line to post 86 of relay. Your thick wire from outside car would going into post 30 on relay inside your car. When you turn on car, then your relay sends power to fuse box via post 87/87a. You then have that same relay on post 85 for your ground.
      Now..... The rest is obvious being you have to run lines from fuse box to switches in order to send power to the Acc post of the switch which goes to the relays outside your car..
      Please man get back to me I need to know if I'm right please.... Thanks.

      30: external power from under hood
      87: power to feed footwell fuse panel

    Hi. This fuse box, does i need to hook up the 4 pin relay as main relay? I knew it was for hi current 4 pin relay. In some video i watch, it was use as main relay to turn on power for new relay box. Am being thinking to use that relay port for my additional cooling fan.

    • @dironaa
      @dironaa  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are tons of different ways to wire up these fuse boxes. Controlling power from the battery with a relay line you said is one is one option. The way mine works is the power is controlled through the switches on the interior. I installed a separate relay that's only powered when the key is on and provides power to the switches...if the key is off the switches won't have power and everything that they control in the main fuse box won't have power.

  • @thetouchtonsoffroad3574

    Wouldnt one fuse be good enough to power all the switches? Not saying that that way is bad but maybe overkill

    • @dironaa
      @dironaa  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes and no. Yes, you could technically install a large fuse to cover all the accessories, but it may not offer adequate protection for the individual accessories. For example if you have four accessories that each draw 10 amps you'll need a 40 amp fuse to cover all four if you want to run them at the same time. Lets say you're only using one 10 amp accessory on that 40 amp fuse and it malfunctions - will this result in a safety hazard? Maybe, maybe not. It depends on the particular accessory. Additionally this is going to require larger gauge wiring which may be more bulky to run.

    I think I'm confused by all the fuses... I get the big one from the battery; don't wanna blow up your relay box, and for each relay there certainly needs to be a fuse, but then why the whole extra fuse box? are those fuses in the footwell just for the switch circuitry while the ones in the relay box deal with the accessory power? Im just starting to add some lights to my FJ and am super OCD so I wanna make sure I get everything right and understand it :)

    • @dironaa
      @dironaa  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The fuse panel in the footwell purely powers switches (which then trigger the relays) and low power accessories. The primary power lead going to the footwell fuse panel comes from one fuse location in the main relay box which is uses a higher amp fuse (20 or 30 amp). The reason I'm running individual fuses to each switch from the footwell fuse panel is so that I can comfortably run thinner gauge wire to each switch. The thinner gauge wire is easier to snake through the dash and makes it easier to run a larger quantity of wires in a tight space. Additionally the dash switches I've bought for various accessores likely wouldn't be able to handle 30 amps without melting if a wire were to short out somewhere. I may have gone overboard on the use of fuses but better to spend a few extra bucks and a little extra time than have to deal with a burned up rig. Hopefully that makes sense.

    • @kyleburns9439

      Dirona Gotcha. All makes sense. Thanks man, I’m starting with some rear roof rack lights from rigid industries, so I think I’ll use their harness at first (except for the ch4x4 switch that I’ll use instead of theirs) and once I get a few more accessories I’ll do something more similar to this.
