  • This is a beer fermentation chiller made from the free "Son of Fermentation Chiller" plans from Ken Schwartz home.roadrunner...
My version uses a 120 volt muffin fan to pull air through two chambers filled with one gallon-sized jugs of frozen water. The fan blows cooled air into the chamber with the fermentation vessel and back in through the cooling duct. The ice vessels are switched out as needed to keep the desired temperature.
An Auberins.com refrigerator temperature controller turns the fan on/off as needed and can also control a fermentation heater device as well. I have the chiller mounted onto a furniture moving cart. The box is made from Dow 2" HiLoad60 foam.
It was a project waiting to happen, as I had every component of this chiller sitting around the workshop and figured, "Why Not?" This project took most of a Sunday and wasn't that hard to do. Having a table saw helps...a lot.

It's a year later and it works like a charm. It can use two frozen one gallon apple juice container a day during the first day or two of a strong fermentation. Then it settles down to one change a day and eventually can go 3 or more days. I keep three gallon jugs in rotation. One in the chiller, one frozen in the freezer, one in the freezer on its way to freezing. It can take a day to refreeze fully, so I change the bottles before they fully thaw for a quick refreeze. Takes fifteen seconds to change out!
