You definitely need to put the lights at the player side facing away from you like they do on the toys, and statues. Acrylic carries light very well, no need for them at the top facing the player.
Looking really good, and that was a cool idea!

I've used a machine like the one on the left for etching leather and acrylic, among other things. Great machines. The trick to acrylic is to check your depth; you can get a finer print if you're not too close to the material. You can also shade with it by using a grey on the computer program, but it's tough to do and not all machines will react the same. Shaded etching would really light well, something to think about. Also it's best to use small etchings, but for a layered effect like you're doing? Don't be afraid to do two etched designs and put them on top one another. Keep in mind with the LED lights - less is more, look at a concert video and stick with no more than three or four colors that compliment each other. But treat these like neon signs - it's essentially what you're making - and you'll be fine.
I wouldn't go too crazy on the background of those acrylic sets - simple is often better, let the lights play the lead. You might add their logo and use the acrylic as the 'face' of the game, maybe.

Yeah, a more shallow fine etching turned out to look the best, thanks for the ideas, I appreciate them!

Are you going to flip the acrylic “upside down” so the etching is on the bottom and the top (play area) is smooth?
