      For the record,
Zheng He was a great merchant explorer from the 15th century who lead massive Chinese trade fleets to places far from China, some speculate he even made it to the New World,
I reckon the Chinese put his statue there because they built the new railway and because as Mombasa was part of the India Ocean trade Zheng He stopped there so he's a semi-relevant figure to make a bust of for that station.
Why locals are angry? Well because in exchange for all the money and infrastructure projects,
China is pressuring countries like Kenya to do more and more favors for China.

This is archetypal dark Africa. It’s how we imagine Africa from Britain. (Though we also see ‘Africa’ as a dense jungle full of monkeys and snakes à la Tarzan.) Having hitchhiked from Europe to Cape Town, I would say it’s not an inaccurate view, though there’s obviously subtle differences in every country. Kenya and Tanzania have a vibe of their own which resonates especially strongly with Brits for obvious reasons. Both wonderful countries with very friendly people.

It was very faded with no ac, the fans were broken, and the engine broke down about 2 miles out of Mombasa, so the journey was extended by half a day. But we were served all our meals in the dining car by waiters in faded but very clean white uniforms and gloves. Who didn't spill a drop of soup despite the train rattling all over the place! It was a pretty crazy but amazing experience.

Honestly, I don't see anything wrong with that fish. That is how small fish are served, you must be used to fillets which became popular in Britain because of the railways. As more and more people emigrated to the cities, fish n chips became the doner kebab, McDonald equivilant of the day. The fish bones were a niussance to get rid of and so filleting was a way to keep the customers happy.
The one train a day is passenger (and would actually be two trains, one and either end), but the line is mostly for freight linking Mombasa port to Uganda and beyond.

Took a small plane up to Lamu a wonderful place at that time. Bus back to Mombassa with real risks of highwaymen. Then I rode the original lunatic express to Nairobi. Went coach class and had a wonderful time chatting and enjoying the scenery. It was great in those days. Back in Nairobi the Modern Day Green Day and Night Bar was something else. And the flight back was via Kigali, I think it was one of the first flights to land there after the genocide. A DC-10 if I recall correctly. In those days I still had my exceptionalist colonial mentality. Brings back such great memories, I used to live in Kenya. Africa (especially sub-Saharan Africa) really does get under your skin, it has a charm & uniqueness that's impossible to ignore. The Aeroclub at Wilson where you've been staying is hands-down one of the best things about Nairobi, I used to play gigs there, great place. Where else can you sit out back with a beer & an awesome burger watching the aviation action just beyond the fence?

Wow you really wasted a good fish, and it looks fresh since it's in Mombasa, unlike those industrialized food of your favorite McFillet or whatever McFish.

Guys, watch the video till the end. The video title doesn't necessarily mean he is criticising the SGR and his experience while riding on it. Personally i enjoyed watching it.

For another out of Africa experience try the overnight train service from Bulawayo to Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe. Can also get on an Airzim 737-200 from the falls to HRE and on to DAR.

Even before Noel's explanation of the Chinese involvement of the new train tracks, I thought this was a city in China. The station, tracks, podium and nearly all aspects of the train station was screaming Chinese design.

Hey Noel. Its the old system that was referred to Lunatic express, Todays system is now the Madaraka Express. Sorry about the fries and the flies stint at the terminal, that's unfortunate but it was wat it was. I however appreciate on how you showcased Kenya and its heritage. Its a beautiful place to be, the best travel destination in Africa. I recommend a travel guide or a resident if you like, next time you visit Kenya You will enjoy a lot of its hidden gem .

ON MAINTENENCE: About 4-5 minutes in there is a statement along the lines of "Of course, the maintenance deteriorated over time." This is true, but the "of course" is an echo of expat condescension. The financial strains on Kenya Railways probably reflected other government priorities, very possibly some graft, and the influence of road trucking interests which did not want the competition. Is there now a rail connection through to Kampala, Uganda?
"ONLY TRAIN OUT OF MOMBASA" This is a death sentence. Eventually someone in the Finance Ministry will read the bottom lines and decide that this prestige project is not worth pumping in more good shillings after those that have been wasted and cannot be recovered. The money plug will be pulled. Yes, it is a neat experience, but massively subsidized, so enjoy the gravy train while it still runs.
REFERENCE: The definitive book is "LUNATIC EXPESS: The Building of an impossible 600 mile railway across East Africa" by Charles Miller. It includes the history and conditions of the Kenya-Uganda area, colonial aspirations, and conflict between British and German colonial forces in East Africa.
