bro.. why didn't you go for an M.2 ssd.. you can get them for around 15 dollars these day's?! Almost bought that card last week.. now I found a 1050 2gb in a dumpster. lol
Definitely. Your average Joe would just assume the 3050 6GB has less VRAM than the 3050 8GB while otherwise being the same, when that isn't remotely the case upon further investigation.
the 6gb 3050 was created for the old office pc with sff case and/or the low powered proprietary psu, which those pc won't work/fit for other better value gpu like GTX 1660 series, RX 6000 series, RTX 3060 and even RTX 3050 8GB version
I bought a OptiPlex with 16gb ram and a i7 6700 for $50 then found a gtx 1050 for $20 and boom a decent gaming pc then about 1 month later I found a gtx 1060 6gb for $20 upgraded and now I'm happy with a $80 build that would have costed well over 250 from eBay
My first rig was exactly that. I eventually upgraded the cooler, psu and a rtx 2070. After I built my new system, I put the 1060 back in and sold it for $400. The dude was super excited to have a Opti Sleeper

I 100% agree with you on the 3050, it has a place. I feel until the Intel A series start turning up on the surplus market, the 3050 is going to be the best option for more modern office computers to game with. Over the last few years there have been so few low profile cards on the market that it has been tough. 1650s still sell for well over $100 in my area, especially low profile versions. I have bought some great Optiplex type systems recently for very little, a 9th Gen i5, with NVME and 8GB of ram was $80, I got a Lenovo Office minitower for $100 with a 10th Gen i7, 512GB NVME and 16GB of memory. Throwing a 3050 would give you a very powerful gaming PC for less than $300.a used A380 would put it at as little as $180.
The new 3050 having some 6 pinless models is low key a game changer. Probably should've had a different model number but I love getting the most out of the motherboard alone for these exact type of builds.
When I was in my teens, always in tight budget, I used to do this kind of builds a lot. This was in the 90s, though, and no usable computer part was cheap back then. Nowadays I tend to assemble these kinds of systems to run machines, for lab students, etc., and they are still awesome, and very silent. I have a fat machine at home these days, but I really love these builds that treat respectfully things that others call e-waste and are great for kids, programming, light development and light gaming.
Not the same prices in the UK, but damn close. You can get an Optiplex MT with 8th and 9th gen i5s for £140-170 with a 20% off code from certain sellers on ebay, 8 or 16GB of RAM and 240/256GB SSDs. Slap in a £159 RTX 3050 6GB and its a solid build already. I would just recommend more storage.
Added benefit of the 8th Gen Intel platform is Windows 11 compatibility. I know you can "force" Win 11 installs on unsupported platforms, but for vast majority of people a budget build should be worry free on OS support for the next few years.
Bro your videos have great chill music I love that you make videos of how even with a low budget you can get pretty decent performance. YOU just earned a subscriber.
Video Idea: PC build using as many used parts from friends, only unused stuff for free, as you can. The stuff they pulled out of their rig and have set on a shelf in the closet, or accumulated randomly, or oem bits like coolers when they used aftermarket. --- If someone needs a functional case, some slower or older ram, misc fans, oem coolers, etc ... Well, I have enough of that stuff sitting in boxes and bins that I'd happily give it to a friend just to clear out some space. If they saved $100 or more they might not have as fancy looking of a system but they could spend that money elsewhere for more performance. A buddy just contacted me asking when I wanted to grab the ram I let him borrow for troubleshooting. I didn't even remember he had it, haha.
I have only one computer so I will not be building budget gaming PC's. However, I find the information you provide here and the format you show is really good. In fact, I can recall when the Optiplex computers were considered brand new and is what was installed for Office PC's. Edit: When you showed Cyberpunk playing in full RTX mode with that funny music, I laughed out loud. Man, to think that 20ish fps back in the release of the original Crysis would have made us content.
I've just got a Dell Precision 3630 with i5 9500, 32GB of RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD, 2x2TB HDD and a RTX 3060 12GB for 400 bucks These prebuilt are really where the deals at Back in 2019 I've done the same with a Optiplex 7010, i5 3570, 16GB of RAM, 500GB SSD & 3TB HDD, and a GTX 1060 6GB, I had to replace the PSU by a CX650M tho, but it turned out pretty well. I kept that machine for about 2 years
That dell inspiron was the pc I've been using these past 3years until I decided it was time to upgrade AND build my own computer. Very nostalgic seeing it again
Last year I refurb'd this same model Dell. Note they DO take NVMe m.2's (it's just below the CPU there). I sorta wish the 3050 6GB was available at the time, as I ended up buying a used RTX A2000 for a bit more money, and it's stuck with the Quadro drivers which aren't quite as gamer-friendly.
This card would've made a lot more sense if it priced a lot cheaper. Make it as a GTX 1650/1660 replacement and sell it for $149. Card will be discounted to $99 at some time and it will make more sense for prebuilt PC owners.
Interesting... you mentioned the 4th Gen Optiplex, and this looks to use the same power supply. That means the XE2 365 watt power supply might work in this system and it has a 6-pin PCIe power connection. What an interesting little system for a entry level build, with a decent CPU, and some upgrade path and should destroy the 4790. The is pretty awesome! However, I don't agree about the i7 9700 as it can still hold it's own against the R5 5600. Granted, that 5600 can be upgraded to an X 3D part and leave it in the dust.
I have that same PC I saved from going to the trash but with an 8th gen i7. Put in 16GB and added a Arc A380 and rear exhaust fan and it's a nice budget machine.
In my opinion, the CPU fan should blow cold and fresh air into the radiator. Add an additional fan to the back of the case and there will be better draft inside and your temperatures will drop.
I know that gpu gets a lot of shit but I still think it’s a great card for what it is… just not for the price. If it launched at $140-$150 I think people would feel a little different about. Great video as always.
The RTX 3050 has a particular use case. There is a half height low profile version of this card. You can stick it into a SFF eliteplexcentre. The length is perfect for those builds. the rx 6400 and the a380 are no match on this card in the SFF form factor.
Mixing a CPU with PCI-E Gen3 lanes with a GPU with PCI-E Gen4 lanes will always result in a bottleneck... still can't understand why people keep on doing this and then complain about the low FPS in gaming...
the gpu is not needed for many people - then this pc makes a lot more sense but you are right about the proprietary parts and such - can be somewhat trying to deal with but for 100 bucks with nvme - pretty great machine to do almost everything other than gaming - if you game just build an am4 box and you will have an upgrade path
Personally Rocking a Lenovo M720s with an i3-8100 and 44Gb of ram, managed to get an RTX A2000 in it, and runs like a dream, except the cpu could use a slight upgrade
We need more of these case sizes in the custom landscape. I'm tired of seeing huge Micro ATX cases that actually require expensive Mini ITX components to work. I know graphic cards have gotten huge, but the reason people opt for smaller form factors is to actually get something compact, not to purchase pricey components. Anyways, rant over 😂
Oh, i was just thinkin about low profile RTX might be my next choise, simply cant afford the big ones. I have 3050 now 2 fan basic version, but eventually it will boom, used now 2/3 years warranty. Gotta be looking for replacements all the time.
hey i have the RTX 3050 8gb and it works well, although i see that's the 6gb version you got there. back when i was new to PC gaming, i put a 1050 ti in my Dell Inspiron 3847 and it worked very well for years after. the great thing about PC gaming is that you can spend as little or as much as you want
great video! I managed to pick up 4 of these 8 months ago for $35 a pop. you can get a PSU adapter for 10-15 from Moddiy if you catch a sale. Other than the name value of the 3050 I think its a better option. Can we get a follow up with a 6600xt or similar?
Hey Ozi, thank you for another great video on older tech. I still have my old 3rd platform, I did upgrade the i5 3470 to an i7 3770. The motherboard is an Intel DH61WW, I believe it was from some office computer, but the layout is pretty standard compared to these proprietary motherboards. Ram is limited to 16gb at 1600mhz and has some slots for expansion. I am running a Gigabyte GTX 950 single fan card on it, but would like to upgrade that at some point if possible, and eventually into a smaller case to make it a little more compact. I would love to see a video where you dive into even older hardware, just to show they are still capable machines, but I'm aware not for modern titles, but maybe for older games or even retro games like a emulation machine. That being said, and know what mobo, ram, and CPU my old system runs, what GPU would you say would be perfect for it without bottlenecking anything to high heavens?
Not a bad build but at that price point you can build an am4 ryzen 5 2600 with a rx 5700 on the used market and it'll run circles around this pc. It only makes sense if you already have a one of these office pc's lying around. Otherwise better to spend that money on an am4 build
Great video OZ, but I would get an AMD GPU( AMD just works better on Linux out of the box overall), put Manjaro Gnome, or Solus Budgie Linux on it, and I could see this as a budget kids PC where they can still play some basic games on it, or as something for an older parent/grandparent/family member who doesn't need a lot of horsepower, but you don't want to stick them with a total turd.
so about my pc in performance for $300 seems like a pretty good deal, though i have the i5 8500 and a 1660 super. definitely a more than capable gaming machine :)
This is one of the few scenarios in which a mediocre card like the 6 Gb 3050 could potentially shine. But IMO its RT capabilities are only there on paper. It's a glorified GTX with tensor cores for DLSS.
I've seen 9th gen dell mini towers for $150 and less. Also, couldn't you run a 1080 ti / 1080 / 1070 for better gaming performance albeit w/o RT? Realistically on such a budget 1044p/1080p non RT is where you fall to.

Once a time I bought a Radeon 7970 and the damn Hewlett Packard desktop chassis wouldn't fit... I distroyed the chassis and problem solved.
I feel like this man took the last pc i saw on ebay
GOD u have such a soothing voice oz thank you for your time
so about my pc in performance for $300 seems like a pretty good deal, though i have the i5 8500 and a 1660 super. definitely a more than capable gaming machine :)
This is one of the few scenarios in which a mediocre card like the 6 Gb 3050 could potentially shine. But IMO its RT capabilities are only there on paper. It's a glorified GTX with tensor cores for DLSS.
love your videos!
I've seen 9th gen dell mini towers for $150 and less. Also, couldn't you run a 1080 ti / 1080 / 1070 for better gaming performance albeit w/o RT? Realistically on such a budget 1044p/1080p non RT is where you fall to.
So chill!
