Prime Minister Narendra Modi has flagged off India’s first water metro which will connect 10 islands around Kochi through battery-operated electric hybrid boats.
The Kochi Water Metro is a project being implemented by Kochi Metro Rail Corporation Limited (KMRL) with the assistance of a German funding agency.
It is an integrated ferry transport system serving the Greater Kochi region in Kerala, India.
Water Metro provides a distinctive urban transportation system that offers a comparable level of convenience and travel experience to traditional metro systems. This mode of transit is particularly valuable in cities such as Kochi.pKWM(Kochi Water Metro) project comprises 78 electric boats and 38 terminals.
Commuters will be able to reach Vypin Terminal from High Court Terminal in less than 20 minutes without getting stuck in traffic. Kakkanad can be reached within 25 minutes from Vyttila via Water Metro
minimum ticket rate for a boat journey is 20 rupees. There are weekly and monthly passes for regular passengers, starting from Rs 180, using which a person can travel 12 times a week

FYI Pontoon = floating platform. It rises or lowers in accordance with high tide or low tide.
Catamaran = a type of boat that has two hulls joined by a platform. This boat can never, never be toppled even if you try (like overcrowding at one side only)
