O Gladsome Light (for chorus SATB divisi)

This video features my setting of Phos Hilaron, the oldest known Christian hymn with a text that is not contained in the Bible. Written in Koine Greek, it is sung at the lighting of the candles during the service of Vespers. The hymn was first recorded in a volume dating to the late 3rd or early 4th century but is probably older. St. Basil the Great (329 - 379 C. E.) regarded the singing of Phos Hilaron as a cherished tradition.
Throughout the centuries there have been many translations and musical settings of the hymn in various Christian communities. I wish to thank Bill Reader for guiding me through the meaning and idiosyncrasies of the ancient text; he helped immensely in my efforts to develop an updated English translation.
O gladsome light! O light of joy!
Pure glory of the eternal Father in heaven!
O holy and blessed Jesus, the Christ!
As we come to the setting of the sun
And behold the light of evening
We sing praises to God: Father, Son, Holy Spirit.
In all times it is right that you be praised by reverent voices, O Son of God, Giver of life!
And so the universe for ever sings your glory!
O Gladsome Light is intended for experienced choral ensembles; the chorale setting may be sung with or without the opening chant.
