Your new bearing slid onto stub axle easily. I have a 2004 VW GTI and bought a new stub axle and bearing for the car. The fitment is so tight that they will not mate together by hand at room temperature. If I freeze the stub axle, the bearing is able to slide onto the axle but just a little, not all the way, and it takes a lot of force. Why is it so much harder to install the bearing on a MKIV vs the MKV? I bought the F & A & G brand stub axle and bearing. I understand these are excellent bearings but getting them mated together is a nightmare. Do you have any advice for easy assembly? What special tools or assembly procedures should I use?

Brilliant video guys. Thanks for taking the time. I bought a 4 lbs sledge hammer for this. I put a 32oz ball peen hammer against the big bolt that holds the hub on and hit it with that 4 lbs hammer 20 times.
My triple square bit is long and can accommodate a deep well socket and room for a combination wrench too, I didn't have any help, so I put the combo wrench parallel to the ground and used a bottle jack to put some lefty Lucy pressure on it, then got 180 degrees on the other side with the high impact 3 foot, 1/2 inch breaker bar and used my foot and leg strength to break it loose. It breaks loose softly and not suddenly. On the left side I used a piece of ply wood to protect my shin bone, but did not do this on the other side.
I highly recommend doing both left and right at the same time. It make sense that they fail as there's no grease zerk for scheduled servicing. My daughter's failed and got noisy at 70K miles.
    You need...
    14 mm triple square
    18 mm triple square
    16 mm combination wrench
    19 mm combination wrench
16 mm for hex drive of the 14 mm triple square to break loose the bolts that hold the caliper mount to the axle.
    19 impact socket, 1/2" drive
    1/2" breaker bar

Yes still stuck after PB Blaster, hammering, trying with 2ft beaker bar, 1/2 inch 3 square socket. Will also need to use heat. But not looking forward to going with in with a flame close to the gas tank. Have only propane, no welding torch, wish me luck.

Thanks for posting . That's one tight bolt . My bearing is fine (no noise )but is chewing the speed sensor . It says signal out of speck on my Blue Driver. Most likely the magnetic ring is rusted and compromised. I managed to undo the front axle bolts easy with my 24 inch barker bar but that one seams scary :) . I may try it on the ground with wheel on :)

After going crazy with various length pipes, I finally got the rear axle nut off on 2006 MK5 Rabbit with Milwaukee M18 Impact wrench with sunex M14 triple square with 1/2 to 3/8 adapter!!
Took about two minutes of pounding and damn thing got loose!! My hands were a bit numb afterward! That Milwaukee impact is an amazing tool!

Had to do the same, but didn't want to damage the hub bolt socket splines. Used a large nut (1.5") with a piece of hose inserted to push it into the hub bolt splined socket and hold it in place on the hub bolt. The nut stuck out past the hub race enough to wack it with a 20lb sledge hammer. Also used a propane torch, eventually cam loose.

I think I'm ready to buy a new car. I have a 2007 Jetta 2.5 sedan. Took my wheel off and realized I need a 24mm socket for the axle bolt. Had to drive to the store to get it. I purchased a set of triple squares. Checked out my new FAG brand bearing and it needs a T60 torx for the 4 bolts, NOT triple square. Have to go to the store to get the T60. I tried to take off the axle bolt, broke my breaker bar. Tried to remove another bolt and broke a ratchet. Got almost everything off and it's time for the 4 bolts behind the bearing hub. M12 triple square is too big, M10 is too small. Had to order an M11 triple square bit on amazon. The correct triple square bit finally came. Just went outside to take off the 4 M11 bolts and they just stripped. I sprayed a ton of PB blaster days ago, and I sprayed a ton before doing the job today. Any advice on how to remove stripped triple square bolts? This thing is a nightmare.

@@LehewTech I think it’s easier if you lower the car down so you can stand on the breaker bar handle. Two skinny fellas can hop on too. The way you were doing it requires you to pull down. My way your on top and just push as you stand on it.

    • @LehewTech
      @LehewTech  6 ปีที่แล้ว

The official service manual showed a special pulling tool, implying that at times the hub assemblies will be stuck to the spindle. In my experience, hub assemblies of this style come off easily (might require hammering and evenly prying on opposite sides of the hub.)

I would have used heat if the hammer didn't work. My hammer was nearby and worked, the torch was not close by. If you do use heat, you may wish to remove the wheel speed sensor from the spindle to avoid melting it.

But seriously - great job and great video, although I could hardly bear to watch when I saw that big breaker bar bending the way it did.
