Waterproofing Outdoor Gear

  • Its the time of the year to waterproof my outdoor gear for the fall and winter seasons. Gear that I also waterproof but did not make the video are, my belts, gloves, shelters, various sheaths and some of my pants. Mostly I use a bar of paraffin and bees way for my frost river pack and other canvas products such as my anorak n.8 by Fjällräven. for my hiking boots i use a homemade cream made from fat, wax and some spruce resin.
    Boots are usually treated more often than the rest of the gear which usually get some attention about twice a year. in the spring and now in the fall. Same with gloves, but on those I use a dedicated balm from Hestra.
    To help protect my paint box from moisture, I apply a thin coat of boiled linseed oil to it, about once per season. I also apply some leather balm to the bits and pieces made of leather. My axe gets the same treatment and so does my knife.
    My canvas tents and tarps are usually waterproofed in mid summer. Its a messy job that i prefer to do outdoors. Small gear and items are done in my house or out in the field as needed.
    Thanks for watching! New videos every weekend, please subscribe.

      I have that Marcus. This is more to make the garment water repellent and wind resistance. It would be weird to call the video “water repealing my gear” 😝👍

    Really enjoy your videos! love the quality and skill you bring to the community. Not a lot of people still waterproof your gear with wax; what an excellent skill and tradition to know and practice! It is a craft that has been long practiced before the toxic chemicals that we use now for waterproofing. Love the art and knowledge you bring back and create in your video! Keep up the awesome work and I would love to see more videos on how to.

    It's all about hands. Applying and rubbing in with heat generated by hands makes difference. I do same for boards andbuse mineral oil,the hand heat drives it in. Great video thanks. I rewatched truck video again,so cool. You said you are in bush most of time,is that your livelihood. All the best from Canada.

    Excellent video. Thank you!
    For years I used a hair drier to melt in my wax, and then one day I borrowed an arts and craft heat gun from a crafty friend of mine. It’s much quieter and much faster. I highly recommend you give it a try!

    How good is the waterproofness of the fjall raven clothing after waxing it to your opinion? Is have several fj clothing and found that even after putting serrious effort in putting the wax on, i always ended op wet in the rain in less tegen one our. The test with the watercup gave the same resultaat to me however.

    • @NagualeroArt
      @NagualeroArt  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      In my experience it makes the clothes resistant to water and dirt rather than totally waterproof. I like that better, to have some flexibility on the breathability and water proof ness of my clothes. For total waterproofness I use a poncho or rain gear

    • @NagualeroArt

    • @NagualeroArt
      @NagualeroArt  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I pretty much eye balled the portions on the one I made. There are lots of recipes on line. This one was made with bees wax, olive oil and a very small amount of spruce resin, mostly for the smell which I love. As a rule of thumb, the more bees wax the harder it will be In the end. Hope that helps

    Very good but why are people still unecessarily using aerosol sprays these days? Treating the hat could have been done with a container of the liquid and a brush. Or mix in a re-useable spray bottle if a spray is 100% necessary.
