Marshall Field's Christmas Windows

  • A tour of the window displays at the historic State Street flagship department store features Uncle Mistletoe, Santa's ambassador of good will and Christmas spirit. The much-beloved winged elf was created in 1946 by Field's designer Johanna Viehe-Naess Osborne to compete with Montgomery Ward's Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. His partner Aunt Holly arrived two years later.
Marshall Field's became (ugh!) Macy's in 2006. Although the Santa Claus and Cinderella windows seen near the beginning of this video date to the Field's era, Macy's 2012-2013 displays are featured. Oddly enough, the latter are a nod to history at "111 N. State." Though no match in quality to the elaborate displays of yore, these windows nonetheless celebrate the Great Tree, Walnut Room, Frango Mint kitchen, Cozy Cloud Cottage, and the multistory Christmas decorations in the atriums - all Marshall Field's traditions established long ago.
Inspiration for this video came from three Christmas classics of the 1950s: the animated shorts Suzy Snowflake, Frosty the Snowman; and Hardrock, Coco and Joe. If you watched WGN-TV's Bozo's Circus back in the day, chances are you'll recall those B&W cartoons. Crudely animated, yes, but those cloying songs stuck to our memories like flypaper. That's what the Uncle Mistletoe song you'll hear in this video is like!

Every Christmastime my mother would take my sister, my brother and me to Chicago to see the windows at Fields and to go to the magnificent toy department. We'd there in a gorgeous dining room that I believe was on the 8th floor. There was a huge Christmas tree decorated with hundreds and hundreds of decorations. IT WAS A CHILD'S DREAM.

Why what does that bring back the memories, nothing like the windows at Marshall Fields in the winter time... to see the big tree in the Walnut Room and maybe be lucky enough to get to eat there or at least go to The frango Mint Floor and watch them make the delicious mint flavored candies Marshall Field's is gone but will never be forgotten

I was always so excited every year to go downtown and see the windows and decorations and have tea in The Walnut Room in the 70’s and early 80’s. And that toy department on the 4th floor was mind blowing to me.
    Thank you for the video.

I remember the 1950 to the 1980's I am 72 now and my mother and father took me to see the windows also. In the 1950's from Congress to Lake Street all of the stores had wonderful windows decoration. In the 1980's only Carson and Field had Xmas windows to look at when I took my daughter, still she love it. Yes the Walnut Room and toy department were magic! Thank you so much for a wonderful memories!!

@@emmetttaylor1739 Ever ride the kid-sized monorail on the ceiling at Wieboldt's? Remember when Moms could safely leave their kids to play in Goldblat's & Wards (Fair Store) toyland for hours? You couldn't risk it today---if the stores even existed yet.

That brought back many memories of my childhood and what I tried to show my children. Lunch around the Christmas tree during the season was a must for my mother and me. Even though I have moved away I will never forget those wonderful times.

I loved the walnut room and the fashion shows. Also the ice cream shop. I know they had other eating places in the store but can’t remember what they were. It was such a beautiful store.

Reminiscent of the geourgeous animated Christmas window displays in New York city. Magical and exciting, especially to a child.

Marshall Field's did not try to sell you things in their windows. They were away's about Christmas, or the fantasy of it. Unlike other stores that stacked merchandise up in theirs if they were animated or not.

Clevelanders had Mr. Jingeling, the "keeper of the keys". He was Santa's head elf, or the toyshop manager, or something. He had a TV show, and was portrayed by two different actors over the years. He could be visited at Halle's.

Nothing like Marshall of 40+ years ago. The toy section was most of the 5th Fl. When my adult daughter was a child I took het there and found the toy section was was only a fraction of the size. Macy's is nothing compared to Marshall Fields of yore!
