  • Is Paris the capital of the most beautiful window displays in the world? It seems that way when we stroll along the most beautiful shopping streets of the French city. The Christmas window displays of Parisian department stores, each holiday season, are more inventive and more surprising…true works of art that dazzle children and parents alike discovering and watching it all like a show, while walking along Boulevard Haussmann. This tradition that starts in early November takes place in joyous splendour. A tradition that dates back to the mid-19th century, a time when most of these department stores were founded.
Window displays imagined and created by artisans and decorators with an inestimable expertise that today are successful, but not at the time: because it was considered bad taste, only provincial people lingered in front of the display… The first animated windows were created in 1909, notably a polar expedition theme, and were exhibited at Bon Marché for the holiday season. A theme that continues to inspire decorators, since the Galeries Lafayette store that we check out today invites passers by on an extra-polar expedition!
Bit by bit, all the stores will have animated Christmas window displays and will call upon automaton specialists, like Raymond Peynet. Certain vendors will also be recognised like Jean Adnet, who worked for Galeries Lafayette from the 1930’s! Just for fun, here are the most beautiful images of the Galeries Lafayette Christmas window displays... We tell you the story that serves as the theme… In a snowy and icy country, discover the incredible adventure of a polar bear family…Weakened by the melting snow, the bears and their cubs leave the North Pole, in search of a new ice field. After a long journey through the endless white landscape, they discover, dazzled, a new ice field created by the Galeries Lafayette.
And it’s a dreamlike experience that awaits them! In this polar white atmosphere the light reflections, pearl effects, and lenses are juxtaposed to reveal all the magic and beauty of this Extra Polar Christmas created by Galeries Lafayette. As for the incredible fir tree located under the dome of the galleries, it is also the work of the young Lyon based artist Lorenzo Papace who is also an artistic director, director and composer. Over the years, he has specialized in an emotional work with paper to create unique works that are full of poetry: scenography, stop-motion, and photography. To give life to these paper creations, Galeries Lafayette called upon Arjowiggins, a paper manufacturer since 1770 and two of its divisions: Creative Papers and Graphic Papers. And we find many prestigious partners of the store hidden within the window displays like the many creations of the house of Dior.
As a note, the little polar bear, an exclusive product from the Galeries Lafayette Extra Polar Christmas, is a small plush bear with a big heart who is the mascot and can be bought in the department store. A special gift this Christmas sold for the benefit of the Wild-Touch association to which all sale profits will be donated.
