Berkley Vanish vs Seaguar Blue Label (Fishing Line Experiment)

  • In what could be the most shocking results yet, I put Berkley Vanish up against the current Champion Seaguar Blue Label in this latest fishing line experiment...
    To see the full blog on this test, click here now: www.saltstrong...
    In this fishing line test, I wanted to see which fluorocarbon fishing line was more abrasion resistant.
    Why?
    Because if you're anything like me, not only do you fish around structure quite a bit, but you're also hunting down snook (and largemouth bass) who have very abrasive lips.
    As you'll see in this Berkley Vanish vs Seaguar Blue Label line test, even though Berkley is about 1/10 the cost of Seaguar (and it's a bit thinner in diameter), it actually tends to be more abrasion resistant!
    Shocked the heck out of us (and we tested this over and over again).
    What are your thoughts?
    Have you seen similar or different results?
    Any other fluorocarbon fishing leaders you want us to test?
    Let us know in the comments.
    And make sure to check out the full post here: www.saltstrong...

    Your test confirmed what I thought from years ago fishing out of San Diego tuna fishing. I used the Berkley Vanish because of the price, then I noticed I wasn't breaking off fish like many others did. Bluefin and yellowfin tuna have extremely abrasive mouths, very tough on the lines. I landed many fish when other were loosing fish due to leader failure. Because it's not very expensive, many pass it right by.

    I’ve used Vanish almost exclusively and only recently started buying Seaguar and Yo Zuri. But, did realize that my Vanish did just well and saved me more money. With this example I’m gonna stick with my oldie trusty Vanish.

    Good test for abrasion...
    How about knot strength?
    Straight slow pull line strength?
    Quick pull / jerk line strength?
    Castability / memory?

    I have been using Vanish for about 11 years, I raved about it always referring friends and family to it. Now this season something has changed I have purchased 5 spools of vanish and have re-spooled all of my rod and reels (6 Quantum baitcasters) multiple times.
    That being said I keep my rods in rod Sox in the rod locker of my bass boat.the line is not exposed to the elements when I’m not fishing.
    I started experiencing line snaps on hook sets many on fresh ties. I was really hoping this video would be a few years old but it’s pretty current. So I found this video hoping to find something to go to besides vanish. I don’t think it’s coincidence that from 5 spools I keep getting the same result of broken lines. Also not only has this been happening to me but a long time friend of mine called me up describing the exact same occurrences. I guess I will look at line other than seaguar or vanish. Last thing this comment may appear to be angry but it isn’t I’m simply putting out there my experience as of late. Thanks for the video.

    Marketing strategy is something we ALL need to remember. Real world testing is the ONLY test that counts. Clearly the Vanish is the way to go...just because it is so much less expensive.
    How many times do people ask " what is the best " rod , reel , line etc ..it is truly and honestly a question with many answers depending on your application, how much you can afford & a few other factors.
    I have done a good amount of research into what makes people buy a certain brand of rods , reels , line , lures , electronics and other fishing related items..even boats.
    I discovered that many follow what the "other guys" are doing.
    When I inquired as to why ea person I spoke to ..anglers from all over the East coast , Salt & fresh , most said that there rods were the best they had ever fished , yet almost all of them were fishing different brands on the same water .
    When asked about there choice of reels ..the most common answer was " this thing is great , I love it ..so smooth" " it's a beautiful reel"
    Salt guys had $$$ Van Stahl reels , Shimano , Penn , Daiwa .. Freshwater guys had (fly) Ross , Orvis , Bauer , Lamson , Sci angler Spinning and conventional had Shimano ,Abu garcia , daiwa , and a host of others from just about evdry source ..bait shops , walmart , Cabella pro shops ,but no matter the price or were they were purchased ...everyone said , "this is the BEST reel..i love it , really dependable"
    So when we ask " what's the best .."
    It is just an opinion..formulated from one's real world experiences or an opinion based on what someone was told that lead to the purchase ..
    Many people said there brand of choice was best and followex that up with " but I haven't had a chance to try it out yet "
    educate YOURSELF with real world results from peoe that have acting used the exact item you are considering ..some brands make fantastic gear as well as absolute junk .
    Tight lines !

    I love the vanish leader material once I was bottom fishing and caught a small grunt and a 6ft lemon shark which has sandpaper-like skin ate the grunt and with 20 lb vanish leader and a Eagle Claw1/0 circle hook I manage to get it to the boat 3 times before the leader broke by then it was a caught fish.

    This is interesting but I find that most of the Seaguar products I’ve used have far less memory than the vanish. If you can blow up a baitcaster like I can being able to pick out the birds nest is a very important part of it. I usually use sun line sniper and love it but have used vanish in a pinch. Seaguar sells the blue label based on being a little softer for better knots. I would expect it is a little less abrasions resistant based on being a little softer. Try red label vs. vanish. I fish Vanish almost exclusively for my leader, but most of my breaks have eventually been at a knot, but it takes a lot of abuse to get to that point.

    For some reason when I tie a light braid to my 50lb Berkley Vanish with an FG knot, or tie the leader to a lure, the fluoro gets a little shredded from my hands cinching it down. I've never had that happen with any line expect the Vanish. It doesn't bring the strength of the line down much, but instead allows the fish to see it.

  • @toho28
    @toho28 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    If I'm not mistaken, the Seaguar is a "leader material" whereas the Vanish your using is fishing line. Vanish does make a "leader material" (small spools) that is considerably more expensive than the fishing line. Not really sure what the difference is. Maybe you should test those.

    • @mattsloan32
      @mattsloan32 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      He is saying the Berkley line stands up well to much more expensive "leader material". While both are fluorocarbon line, leader spools are shorter and much more expensive than a spool of line because they are "supposed" to be higher quality controlled runs with less variance allowed end to end. But I suspect this is not often not the case and the average fisherman has no way to tell the difference.

      Comparing Vanish line to Vanish leader is a great suggestion. Meanwhile, I went with the logic that leader would be better than line, ignoring price. From Cabela's in Canada, I've bought Vanish "leader material" (small spools). Price per yard is less than other brands there of "leader material" (small spools) such as MAXIMA.

    Have you ever tried the KastKing fluorocarbon line and compared it to other lines? I just ordered the 6 lb test Kastking to try out and it rates at a full .02" smaller in diameter than the 6 lb test Berekley Vanish, which makes a big difference in fly fishing, which is where I'll use this in lake leaders. Although abrasion resistance isn't typically an issue in my lake fly fishing applications, knot strength is, so I'll compare the two once I get this. The Kastking is quite reasonably priced I found.

    I use vanish in both 20lb and 30lb sizes depending on the situation. Both seem to work well with a double uni to attach to my braid however, the single uni at the terminal end is another story. I've tried anywhere from 4-7 wraps and it's always the same story; a horrible looking knot (which never pops) that doesn't inspire a lot of trust. Even a well lubed carefully tied knot will break inside the wraps if pulled "tight" with what seems to be a reasonable amount of force. Which leaves you with a seemingly loose knot which I hope doesn't slide off while I'm fighting a fish. Of course I'm no pro angler but, that's my 2 cents

      Both of these lines are 100% fluorocarbon, so they should have the same density thus the same refractive index (only difference in refraction from one 100% fluoro line to another is supposed to be just from their respective diameters).
      As for feeling limper/softer, the Vanish def feels more limp relative to Seaguar.

    Why bother switching the lines in between tests if you use a different motion with the sandpaper? You should keep it consistent.

    • @Saltstrong
      @Saltstrong  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I did multiple other tests, and the Vanish won every time regardless of motion direction or side placement... I just didn't film them all because it would have made for a very boring video:)

      Salt Strong ahh I see thanks for clarifying. I like these tests by the way it's nice to see someone unaffiliated with any brands doing strength/abrasion tests like these. Saves a lot of us time and money.

    In my experience knots do not hold up well with vanish. Lost more than I care to admit due to knot strength and overall knot performance. Very poor in that category IMO

      Salt Strong I’ve tried a variety of knots from the San Diego Jam to improved clinch and a few in between and just couldn’t find a knot that held up or didn’t burn even with it being well lubed. This was 5 years ago or so so maybe it’s time to give it another try?

    What about cast ability

    • @Saltstrong
      @Saltstrong  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      We use these fluorocarbon lines just for leaders (only about 24 inches of line in between the lure and the braid mainline), so the castability is not a factor that we've tested.

    They are breaking less than one turn or one another! That is not a big difference to me. The point of breaking off 10secs into fighting fish vs 11sec not that big of deal. If if was 10-15sec later. Then I would agree to this..but dripping one after another isn't that bad..

    While I applaud your testing, I'm not sure I understand the comparison. Your testing one brand of (Line)material, vs another of (Leader) material. I.E. Leader vs LIne, not Leader vs Leader would have been more useful. Knot strength comparison between the 2 different types would probably be more useful.

    • @Saltstrong
      @Saltstrong  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most of my breakoffs are due to snook rubbing through my leader line, so that was the feature that I wanted to focus on for this experiment. I used to think that the "leader" lines were more abrasive resistant, so the mainline was the only one at a disadvantage... but it proved to be stronger than the leader line in this test.
      Yes, I'll be conducting a test on knot strength on these two lines soon to see which one wins the pull strength test.

    The vanish is garbage. Caveat being I tried 2 spools of their 40lb Vanish to use as leader material and both spools while cinching the knot with gloves (needed that with 40lb fluoro) the line would fray just from glove friction....absolute crap.

  • @MichaelP0418
    @MichaelP0418 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    When you're comparison is literally a 50 cent difference between the two, I'm not really sure many will care lol. Also, how about doing a line strength test without any abrasion, to see what holds up better?

    • @billymaroulis5896
      @billymaroulis5896 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Vanish is 250 yards, Seaguar is 25 yards... So you get 225 yards more line with vanish for that 0.50 cent difference.
