The skin honestly speaking is cool as hell. It is based off of the invasion of Czechoslovakia during the 1968 Prague Spring. The vertical stripes are invasion/recognition stripes simmilar to the black and white ones used on western-ally planes during landingoperations in WW2 (like Sicily or D-Day). I love seeing the soviet version of these stripes in game since the MiG-19 was always teased with them but (for some reason) never recieved them in game.
Definitely worth mentioning this, it's a very interesting fact. In game, the MiG-19's icon also has these stripes, so it's really odd that the final version didn't even get this as a skin.
All the planes in WT realistic mode outperform their real versions as far as maneuverability go by roughly 20-30%. The mouse aim + instructor AI means that all these planes perform as if they have fly by wire that won't let you exceed AOA limits, and all of them pull SUBSTANTIALLY more g force than allowable in reality without permantly damaging the frame (or ripping a wing) some planes it's a lot more than that. I have seen a warning of 11 g in the F5E, in reality it's rated max was 6.3 in the wingtip missile configuration. Now those safe limits weren't the limit of what the plane could do and keep flying, but 11 g's is way out side the margin of safety there. Anyway, my point is the "unrealistic manuverability" of the Thud is matched by the "unrealistic manuverability" of literally everything else. The Mig 21 pulls AOA like a plan doing a cobra!
I bought on the Mig 21S when it released mostly because I could not get kills the Mig 21F-13 despite the weeks of experience I had with it. Even though the Mig 21S has bad misslies for its br, I found a way to counter it by staying on the deck and going around the center of the map and attacking the enemies from behind and it works 99% of the time. The only time if doesn't work is when I jumped by A-5C's but It only happened twice so far.
I grinded the La-200, La-15, Su7B, Su7BKL, and Mig-21SMT with the Mig-21S in the matter of a few days. It also gave me an extra Rank 6 jet, so I only had to grind out the Mig-23 and Su-17 lines in order to reach rank 7, which saved me from grinding 5 more planes. The plane I was using to grind before was the Mig-19PT and that was an absolute pain in the ass to use. I couldn't aim the NR30s, my wings snapped off if I turned and rolled ,and having only 2 crap R3S missiles was just pointless. The Mig-21S at the same BR is just an ultimately better plane in most regards and the radar missiles are basically guaranteed head-on kills at medium-high alt. Afaik the wings are also impossible to break off in any sort of dogfight or high-g maneuver to thats a huge plus for me.
Worth coming back to look at this plane again. Absolute beast with BR changes over the past 2 years. Unless you get a full up tier, which seems very rare at 9.7, you don't have to worry about enemy radar missiles and the R3R's are great at getting head on kills or hitting anyone slightly low on energy that pops up into radar altitudes. Anyone owning this aircraft struggling to do well. Stay high, stay fast. Once planes get into the mosh pit look for ones that push up too high into radar lock range pounce for the kill. Then come down as the enemy thins out to get cannon kills or help teammates. Stay fast and you can outrun and dodge most of the IR missiles it currently faces with ease. Remember to turn that massive flare of an afterburner off when you dodge and don't get caught in a 1v2 or more, just zoom, zoom and zoom.
I just picked up the Mig-21S to grind the Soviet tree after finishing my grind of the American tech tree and it is still a learning curve. If this is your first intro to jet combat, its a tough one. The missiles are not ideal so I am led to rely on my guns but the small ammo pool requires a great deal of accuracy. I have been babied by the large ammo pools of American aircraft so this has taken some getting used to. It definitely can be done and this video is super helpful!
I go 2 sarhs and 2 ir missiles. The r3rs are great in late headons in my experience but I just abuse the relatively low repair cost and learned the gun that way. With some finesse, you can take out ai ground targets in 2 or 3 bullets. My only tip is to avoid getting baited into rate fights with harriers.
I had a tough time getting to 50% win rate, but managed to do it! I have played 300 games already with it. And good luck finding someone with >50% win rate with this plane; everytime I check the profiles, the win rate sits around 30-40%... Tough plane, but so rewarding.
this was my first jet and it took a couple days to get used to it but I found that the r3r missiles are amazing. just don't launch them until you are within 3 km of other plane. gun kills happen quite often too
I have a problem with how they bleed speed during turns so they are useless in dogfights. They are just good at head ons where you can release the R3Rs within 2km and hope for a kill. If the opponent has any countermeasures you not hitting anything

Any dog fighting or prolonged stay in an enemy's swamp does not end well. the engine is good but it doesn't help in low speed dog fighting, the mig21s can just barely stay in the air while most of the enemy performs better.

So I bought this like a year ago, give or take with no researching (Heresy I know), I was *very* new to war thunder and didn't think too much; I just figured "Hey if I'm paying for it, it must be great! I'll be dominating matches and flying through the tech tree in no time! I'm sure jets and props are just slightly different in playstyle!" I bought the GE, bought the jet, and (predictably) got my ass kicked in match after match with no clue what I was doing wrong because of course I didn't. The funniest bit of newbie logic I fell into was to assume that just because the _Launch range_ of the R3R is 9KM that must be the _functional_ range, and I was incredibly confused to see my missiles disappear into the distance and not get a kill. I abandoned it *very* shortly thereafter. Now a year later, I have reasonably high tier Britain at 9.7, the same rank as this jet, I've got experience with aircraft of this rank; I returned to the Mig 21 and gave it another chance... And hoo boy, am I having a blast. It's not the best jet in the game, its not even my favourite, but damn is it fun.
Moving cone as well as other planes moving intakes are modelled on models in game (wing folding or refueling probes too). Those are not just active now. First close to those are aux intake covers on British phantoms opening in low speeds
I dunno if you wanted to know or not but the default skin for the '21S are the invasion stripes for operation danube (The Soviet/Warsaw pact invasion of Czechoslovakia) Although there was no middle white stripe irl
To be honest, I have way better luck with the R3Rs. Even after unlocking R60s for the 21SMT I continued to bring R3Rs. I would've done the same for the 21bis, but people tend to bring chaff in addition to flares at top tier, and the R3R reacts about as well as the R60s do to countermeasures.
I got tricked in my f104 once because i didn't know it had radar missiles and i got killed in a head-on now when i see them i say you are not going to fool me again and climbing again to make another pass when they would engage other targets

I find TIms Variety reviews to be the most on point and relevant unlike many others who are acting like religious zealots who would condemns you to be burned alive if you did not adhere to their flying tactics or play style.
As someone with lots of flight time and kills with this plane, high altitude is where this thing shines, especially with the aim 9 l In the game. I go to 7km with 4 r3rs and destroy most aircraft head on or coming down from above. It's a boom and zoom plane first. Definitely can dog fight though. The hard thing with this plane is how fickle it is, it takes time to find the little nuances of the radar but once you do its an amazing plane to grind Silver and Research.
I want to buy this literally because I want a MiG-21 and I dont wanna grind, plus to help with the grind. I dont even have proper jets, but I dont want to keep playing 9.7 without any
I would disagree with your evaluation of R-3s. Infrared one is borderline useless even in full uptier, but radar one is one of the best head-on options in the br bracket.
I mean he's still right that the R-3R is probably the worst radar guided missile in the game. In this BR range, aircraft have access to the AIM-7C/D/E (F3H-2 at 9.7, F-4C at 10.0, F-104S at 10.7), the R.530 (Mirage IIIC/E at 10.3), and the AIM-9C (F-8E at 10.3). The only other radar guided missiles besides those are the ones at top tier which are obviously more capable. They're better than the R-3S by a lot IMO but they're also trivial to dodge since they only pull 10G max anyways. The only thing that's probably worse are the British missiles.
Figured I would get this with the Su 22m3 for my USSR grind, I have always loved the 21s so that's why I am willing to buy it but I wish they had the r60 missiles instead like the spsk I think it is. Getting this and the squadron 22m3 with a tali thrown on it, I think I should be able to rip through the tree in about a month or 2
Honestly the thing I can't stand with this plane is it's super inconsistent radar. Ive lost lock on non-evading targets with 0 ground clutter far too many times and the boresight mode has a nasty habit of locking onto friendlies even if they are barely out of the search arc

After they changed it to the loud one, I complained ... complained strongly .. on the CC discord and sent gaijin a couple video clips showing that the player experience was just gawd awful - BING BING BING BING at max volume from friendly airfield radar immediately after spawning, for the entire match until you win or die - and the sound wasnt linked to any of the volume sliders etc etc. Footage captured during that period was completely unusable and playing casually required muting my sound. I am .. quite satisfied .. with the new sounds in comparison.
I’ve always held that there is no better premium top tier than the American F-5C great dogfighter and yeah it lacks radar but it’s simple which is why I say it’s the best entry since besides your ground pound loadouts you have twin 20 mils with good ammo and twin aim9E’s to teach you how to fire heat seekers not to mention how easy it is to fly and it’s great climb rate with a decent top speed the only deathly draw back really happens to come when you get hit with cannons you tend to lose fins and stabilizers but still a great starting point for a super sonic missile fighter
The F5-C imo, suffers from lack of good missiles, low top speed, and constant up-tiers. The Aim9's only work against targets flying strait and not paying attention, while almost every plane you face has either R60's or SARH. It has decent top end accel, good climb rate, but for the BR you typically end up placed at: Low top speed. Just about everything this plane will face can outrun it; Which also means you *can't* outrun said planes if you're in a bad spot. The only things it really has going for it is its strait BUSTED damage model, (I've taken so many missiles that should have killed me in that thing) and it's turning. "but still a great starting point for a super sonic missile fighter" You're not flying this thing 5km up where you get owned by SARH missiles, so you're not going over mach either lol. The F5-C isn't good for learning missile thunder. It's a dogfighter.

Got it as my first jet and I new it was gonna be a Learning curve but I have been getting better pulling 3 to 4 kills before a death most times but he is right test flights make you wanna get it or not re fly planes over and over fly other options make sure it’s the one ya know ?
That happens more and more now. Unfortunately "hunt the youtuber" is still WT's favorite sport, so if people on the other team recognize me I frequently get dogpiled 5 on 1 (or worse) ... like, a lot ...
If you've already used a jet before and know the basics of jets and jet combat stuff it's a good grinder for russian air. If you're relatively new to warthunder or cant aim super well I wouldn't bother with any mig, as they have no ammo and the guns are janky.
Can we have a review on the Hunter F6? The hunter F1 is pretty bad even in 9.0 but the SRAAM can be a good thing but doesn't change the fact its still 10.3

@@ekathe17th2 Yeah I second this. I recently purchased the F86F40 JASDF and it made me realize how bad 9.0-9.3 BR is right now. Almost 100% uptiers into R60, Magic, and SRAAM missiles make it almost impossible to enjoy. People say "Skill issue" but really, they are just being dicks. The sabre is slower with no counter measures or RMR, low top speed and terrible acceleration when compared to the competition. The missiles are aim9b which can get kills in certain situations but all in all you wont last long enough for that situation to arrive. And if you fk off into the side of the map, climb, and come in late you're leaving your team vulnerable to get wiped in the merge which will leave you, a sabre, vs 4-7 supersonics and A10/Su25's
Have you played it actually? It's slower than the MF/SMT. And you speak about pay to win, when it's just a PFM with 2 more pylons and a bit more power. Don't wanna speak about the AV8A, AIM-9G and 200+ flares and air spawn? or the A5C? The MiG-21S is just at the right BR.

How do you get ccip on the Cannons? In my 21s i only discovered i had ccip when I went groundpounding yesterday and had air to ground rockets selected.
From what i gather at the moment this thing is eitheir basically a hybrid of the 21S and the 21SM (r13-300 enbgine and no internal gun), or some sort of retrofitted 21S with the r13-300. Wonder if gauijin will give it it's internal gun and make it a full SM or nerf the engine.
it's a shit plane because flight performance and good mach speed don't help when the greatest developing minds of core game are teaming su7,mig21s, and other planes with no good weapons, no countermeasures against hoards of A5/F5/A-10 just to make premium sales worth. I have 49% win victory out of 591 battles with the 21S and i`m above average player i`d say. The R3R's are the kind of rocket you have to ask your target to stand still until you can actually put it physically on it, in order to work.

Also the MiG-21S being capable of matching the speed and unrealistic maneuverability of a Thunderchief at 9.7 makes the MiG a real treat.

I also want to add that it has 4x S-24 at 9.7.
If you add the maneuverability you have a very fast plane for 3-4 easy kills in combined battles.
I run it in ground rb with 2 s-24 and 2 r3r it can get four kills with ease
Now, it has an updated cockpit with a nvd camera, and I believe a visible rwr

As someone with lots of flight time and kills with this plane, high altitude is where this thing shines, especially with the aim 9 l In the game. I go to 7km with 4 r3rs and destroy most aircraft head on or coming down from above. It's a boom and zoom plane first. Definitely can dog fight though. The hard thing with this plane is how fickle it is, it takes time to find the little nuances of the radar but once you do its an amazing plane to grind Silver and Research.
As ge planes are on sale do you think it's worth it for 4k ge

I would disagree with your evaluation of R-3s. Infrared one is borderline useless even in full uptier, but radar one is one of the best head-on options in the br bracket.

I mean he's still right that the R-3R is probably the worst radar guided missile in the game. In this BR range, aircraft have access to the AIM-7C/D/E (F3H-2 at 9.7, F-4C at 10.0, F-104S at 10.7), the R.530 (Mirage IIIC/E at 10.3), and the AIM-9C (F-8E at 10.3). The only other radar guided missiles besides those are the ones at top tier which are obviously more capable.
They're better than the R-3S by a lot IMO but they're also trivial to dodge since they only pull 10G max anyways. The only thing that's probably worse are the British missiles.
Figured I would get this with the Su 22m3 for my USSR grind, I have always loved the 21s so that's why I am willing to buy it but I wish they had the r60 missiles instead like the spsk I think it is.
Getting this and the squadron 22m3 with a tali thrown on it, I think I should be able to rip through the tree in about a month or 2
Honestly the thing I can't stand with this plane is it's super inconsistent radar. Ive lost lock on non-evading targets with 0 ground clutter far too many times and the boresight mode has a nasty habit of locking onto friendlies even if they are barely out of the search arc
What’s your opinion on the new rwr noise? The high pitched one was so annoying that I didn’t play the entire time. But then they changed it to the f14 one
After they changed it to the loud one, I complained ... complained strongly .. on the CC discord and sent gaijin a couple video clips showing that the player experience was just gawd awful - BING BING BING BING at max volume from friendly airfield radar immediately after spawning, for the entire match until you win or die - and the sound wasnt linked to any of the volume sliders etc etc. Footage captured during that period was completely unusable and playing casually required muting my sound.
I am .. quite satisfied .. with the new sounds in comparison.
I’ve always held that there is no better premium top tier than the American F-5C great dogfighter and yeah it lacks radar but it’s simple which is why I say it’s the best entry since besides your ground pound loadouts you have twin 20 mils with good ammo and twin aim9E’s to teach you how to fire heat seekers not to mention how easy it is to fly and it’s great climb rate with a decent top speed the only deathly draw back really happens to come when you get hit with cannons you tend to lose fins and stabilizers but still a great starting point for a super sonic missile fighter
The F5-C imo, suffers from lack of good missiles, low top speed, and constant up-tiers. The Aim9's only work against targets flying strait and not paying attention, while almost every plane you face has either R60's or SARH. It has decent top end accel, good climb rate, but for the BR you typically end up placed at: Low top speed. Just about everything this plane will face can outrun it; Which also means you *can't* outrun said planes if you're in a bad spot. The only things it really has going for it is its strait BUSTED damage model, (I've taken so many missiles that should have killed me in that thing) and it's turning. "but still a great starting point for a super sonic missile fighter" You're not flying this thing 5km up where you get owned by SARH missiles, so you're not going over mach either lol.
The F5-C isn't good for learning missile thunder. It's a dogfighter.

In Recent years im disapointed with Premium Vehicles Gaijin do whatever they like with them so i found better grind SL in props and Talisman Research Vehicles top BR atleast you don't get screwed from them over time.

@@Arkhmar back in the day( 7 months ago) in war thunder there was just 1 type of ballistic computer, not different one for cannon and bombs, so there was ballistic computer for guns too

Got it as my first jet and I new it was gonna be a Learning curve but I have been getting better pulling 3 to 4 kills before a death most times but he is right test flights make you wanna get it or not re fly planes over and over fly other options make sure it’s the one ya know ?

May I ask why you have your cannon ballistic computer on while attacking planes from above wouldn’t that make aiming harder?

If you've already used a jet before and know the basics of jets and jet combat stuff it's a good grinder for russian air. If you're relatively new to warthunder or cant aim super well I wouldn't bother with any mig, as they have no ammo and the guns are janky.
It's the best one unless you prefer playing as a bomber, then get the Su-7 BMK.

@@ekathe17th2 Yeah I second this. I recently purchased the F86F40 JASDF and it made me realize how bad 9.0-9.3 BR is right now. Almost 100% uptiers into R60, Magic, and SRAAM missiles make it almost impossible to enjoy. People say "Skill issue" but really, they are just being dicks. The sabre is slower with no counter measures or RMR, low top speed and terrible acceleration when compared to the competition. The missiles are aim9b which can get kills in certain situations but all in all you wont last long enough for that situation to arrive. And if you fk off into the side of the map, climb, and come in late you're leaving your team vulnerable to get wiped in the merge which will leave you, a sabre, vs 4-7 supersonics and A10/Su25's

Have you played it actually? It's slower than the MF/SMT. And you speak about pay to win, when it's just a PFM with 2 more pylons and a bit more power. Don't wanna speak about the AV8A, AIM-9G and 200+ flares and air spawn? or the A5C? The MiG-21S is just at the right BR.

How do you get ccip on the Cannons? In my 21s i only discovered i had ccip when I went groundpounding yesterday and had air to ground rockets selected.

From what i gather at the moment this thing is eitheir basically a hybrid of the 21S and the 21SM (r13-300 enbgine and no internal gun), or some sort of retrofitted 21S with the r13-300. Wonder if gauijin will give it it's internal gun and make it a full SM or nerf the engine.

it's a shit plane because flight performance and good mach speed don't help when the greatest developing minds of core game are teaming su7,mig21s, and other planes with no good weapons, no countermeasures against hoards of A5/F5/A-10 just to make premium sales worth. I have 49% win victory out of 591 battles with the 21S and i`m above average player i`d say. The R3R's are the kind of rocket you have to ask your target to stand still until you can actually put it physically on it, in order to work.
