    This is a super-charged election season, and Karnataka is just the start. The BJP, which has long espoused the Uniform Civil Code, has included it in its Karnataka manifesto, and Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma says his state is exploring a ban on polygamy, which is allowed under Islamic law and also practised by certain tribes. But where exactly does polygamy stand in India, and does the ‘Hum 5, Humare 25’ brouhaha add up? In Ep 1229 of Cut The Clutter, Editor-in-Chief Shekhar Gupta parses official data to offer some answers.

    I agree with most of the things, but i disagree that polygamy is not a big problem. Let's say there are 800 million adults extrapolated in survey and let's say half are women, that would mean 4 million women are in polygamous marriages. So it's a huge problem in all communities.

    • @divyeshmandavia979
      @divyeshmandavia979 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yes, this is true. 4 million is a big number. The impact of absolute on percentage. This is not equal law for Muslim men and women. Means women cannot have more husband's (polyandry) and men get that privilege.

      Don't understand how polygamy is a population problem though...If 4 women are married to 4 men and say they have 4 children each..If 4 women are married to 1 man, chances are they'll have less than 16 children....way less... The population problem, i don't think is due to polygamy, but more so due to reluctance in using birth control.... that is where the focus should be on...

Women fertility reduce by 45th year. Means more production in less time. They do inter family s*x too. Means more men involved than just one. Power of compounding. It also favors love jihad ideology
      You people are zero in understanding careful planned conspiracy used by non-partitioned muzziess since 47. Aisa in logo ne Mohd ke time se kiya so that non muzlies dont get women to marry and they could raise army of children. Its clearly against basic morals.

    • @shivanshgoyal_
      @shivanshgoyal_ ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @keerthichandra40 he didn't mean it is a population issue, he meant it is a gender ratio issue. If one man married 5 women and there are already less women in society as this kind of society is inherently patriarchal, that means there are way less women available for eligible men. Only class, money or other characteristics like physical looks will get a bride and a large population will be deprived.

The real question to be asked is: Why should any religious community have that privilege? If I start a new religion and say that the followers of my religion can have 10 wives, will that be accepted?
    A real liberal democracy is one where all citizens are treated equally. No extra privileges just based on which family one is born into.

    I'm still not able to wrap my head around his way of using TFR to negate polygamy.....
    My counterpoint or questions:
    TFR by defination means the number of children a woman would have.
    That leads to two situations, let's say TFR is 2.0:
    In monogamy relation: woman produces two baby, which means that two person (wife and husband) produces two child.
    In polygamy relationship: ( let's take an example of 4 wife )
    4 women will produce 8 child, which means a group of 5 person is producing 8 offspring.
    So my point is in both the cases TFR is 2.0 ......but whereas in monogamous relationship the ratio will remain 1:1, but in polygamous it will be 1:1.6
    Hence a question arises, we call TFR of 2 as replacement, because we think that 2 people are producing 2 babies, but isn't this concept nullified in polygamous marriage?

      Don't confuse the issue by redefining in terms of a couple. TFR is just related to how many kids a woman is having. Whether married to different men or to one man doesn't make a difference.

    • @person1420
      @person1420 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If there are only 5 men and 5 women in the world (10 people in total), let's assume. And let's say a woman can have only 1 children in a year because it takes about a year (9 months for pregnancy and 3 months breastfeeding etc.) to have a child.
      1st Scenario:
      1 man married to 5 women. Other men would have no wife cuz there are only 5 women.
      So, if this one man impregnates all of his wives then they would all give birth to 1 child in this year.
      Total children: 5
      2nd Scenario:
      1 man married to 1 woman. So that all 5 men are married to only 1 women. (So all people are married in this case)
      Each women gets pregnant by her husband and give birth to 1 child.
      Total children: 5
      Basically how many children would be born only depends on how many women are getting pregnant. Now if 1 man is impregnating 1 woman or 5 women doesn't matter. Only the number of women getting pregnant matters.

      The issue is just not polygamy but low status of women in Islam which results in her being illiterate , making her a baby making machine for political purposes and then she loses inheritance rights, child rights and even divorce laws are against her(even after removing instant talaq).

    can you do an episode showing the statistics showing inter caste hindu marriages,
    Hindu-muslim marriages depicting number of of hindu/muslim men marrying muslim/hindu women and other combination with Christians.
    And you can show it from the time of independence broken by decades.
    That would be helpful too.
    Another statistics regarding conversions.
    And if we can break up by states, it would be great.
    At least Indians would get the real picture of whats really happening.
    This would also probably help removing a label of being a Muslim apologist at every step.

      There are no such statistics. Nobody has. All we have is anecdotal evidence. And only Kerala govt collected statistics where 90% inter religion marriages happen between Hindu girls and Muslim boys.
      The fact that Kerala and West Bengal becoming Muslims majority states is enough for the alarm to rise but Hindus are as usually sleeping and denying reality.
      West Bengal after partition nearly had 85% Hindus now 70%
      Kerala was 68% Hindu now 45-50% barely.
      Sometimes I feel we as Hindus deserve that.

You having 5 wives is none of my problem. But change the rules to control corruption, injustice, empowering people (way too much power with police, administration and politician), if a policeman stops you or wife in the middle of the night then you are more worried than feeling relaxed. India still ranks poor and lower than china and afganistan in press freedom, ranks lower than afganistan, Pakistan and sun-Saharan countries in hunger index. My wife is a Chinese, when I travel to china, I never get afraid of Chinese police or state (all I have to do is to nit criticise the CCP, which is non of my business. I also don’t feel insecure when staying in Dubai (all I need to do is respect their culture and constitution). Once a boy misbehaved with my wife (who is from china) outside the delhi airport, I ended up having heated debate with him and called the nearby standing police who did nothing to that boy, so I went to his senior in the cabin who tried to calm me down but ended up telling me to suck it up and that my wife shouldn’t feel bad as it’s normal in their culture (all the Indians feel that their culture is the best but their have the highest rate of incest and rape in their society, an Indian boy finding a girl in a middle of road at night looks at her like a sexual prey rather than thinking about helping. I came to know that the boy who misbehaved with my wife was a son of politician. No politician even in communist country like china can escape the rule or constitution unlike India. 1 muslim man + 2 wife @ 2 kids per wife = 4 kids / 3 people = ratio of 1.33:1

      There are around equal number of men and women in the world.
      So lets say there are 2 men and 2 women in the world. (So only 4 people are in the world in total)
      Let's say
      1man marries 2 women. Then the other man would remain single forever. And every women has 2 kids.
      So total kids: 4
      Let's say
      1 man marries 1 woman and the other man marries the other woman.
      Now both women have 2 kids.
      So total kids: 4
      So in both cases no. of kids would be the same. No matter if a man married 1 woman or 2 women. Because it is the women that get pregnant and give birth.
      It doesn't matter if they are getting impregnated by a man who is impregnating other women too. It only matters that women are getting pregnant. Okay.

    This is not about percentage sir. It is about giving equal status to Muslim women, similar to other women. If you look into dowry cases /deaths percentage also, you will get similar number, it does not mean that dowry is not a problem. Currently, Hindu women have the protection of law for dowry but Muslim women don't have the same against polygamy. If they want to complain, where will they go.
    Similarly, inheritance rights, divorce alimony are totally in favor of men contrary to other Hindu laws which favor/equalize women.
    This is must needed reform but Muslim women should come together to voice for that. Because pseudoliberals and intellectuals will not come until they (muslim women) start screaming.

    The anchor smartly undermines the higher rate of growth of the Muslim population by adding a rider telling that Muslims' rate of growth is slightly higher than the Hindu rate of growth. Anchor deliberately hide certain information from people. Anchor must tell the audience how not only in India but almost in every non-Muslim nation, the Muslim rate of growth is higher than native population. Why it's so? Can anyone neglect the religious angle.

    • @person1420
      @person1420 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because most Muslims in the world are poor. And poor people have more kids.
      It is important to note that population growth rates can be influenced by various factors, including social, economic, cultural, and educational factors. It is not accurate or fair to solely attribute population growth differences to religious factors. Population growth rates can vary due to factors such as fertility rates, mortality rates, migration patterns, socio-economic conditions, and access to healthcare and education.
      Drawing conclusions solely based on religious angles may oversimplify complex demographic trends and can perpetuate stereotypes or biases. It is important to approach discussions about population growth rates with a nuanced understanding of the multiple factors that contribute to these trends.

Also, I thought most of the tribes were converted to Christianity. I don’t understand polygamy in them. Irrespective, one nation one law makes sense. Why stop at personal laws, it should extend to taxing of places of worship. If temples are under Govt control then all religious places should be. Or none at all. Same with education institutes. That would make us truly secular!! Otherwise it is just hogwash!

    Thank you for the very informative video Shekharji. I was aware of these facts in bits and pieces but you have brought them together very succinctly in a single video. Sadly our mainstream media channels have totally abandoned their role of questioning the government in power regardless of political persuasion. It is also an excellent counter to the flippant way some people raise these issues as a way to demonize Muslims in India. Unfortunately many of them are incapable of accepting facts and figures because they are firmly rooted by their prejudices. The BJP seems to have run out of the ability to run of their record as evidenced by the campaign they ran in Karnataka. If they conduct a rational post mortem of their defeat in Karnataka they might be able to learn something from the strategy employed by the Congress party but the politics of nationalism and polarization is easier, more alluring and frankly, lazy, but devastatingly effective.

That will be a true picture of how Indian society is improving in terms of polygamy. We are not considering how polygamy is trending with every increasing period of marriage.

    Hindus and BJP politicians have gotten a wrong interpretation of the Islamic Sharia law on polygamy. It's not compulsory to have more than one wife. The law only allows those who are in need to have more than one wife. Therefore, the uniform code is not a serious concern for Muslims in India. Those who are in need can have more wives without going through registration as the Hindus practice now.

The intervals may vary, but power will rotate only between these two forces. Both parties have a dedicated voter base. For BJP, it is the Hindutva vote, and for INC, it is the Muslim voter base. The trump cards are held by the "First time" and loyalty-shifting "Floating" voter. All other issues are meaningless.

    About polygamy in Islam:
    It also says only if you can be fair to all those women. There are scholars who argue that it was only allowed because in the Battle of Badr (happened during the time of Prophet Muhammad), many men died. And there were many women left that were widowed and many women that became orphans. So, in order to take care of them God allowed man to marry more than 1 woman but only if they can be fair to all the wives. But it also says in the Quran that you would not be able to be fair between your wives.
    Which makes some scholar argue that polygamy is allowed but really discouraged.
    "If you fear that you may not deal justly with the orphans, then marry [other] women that you like, two, three, or four. But if you fear that you may not treat them fairly, then [marry only] one, or [marry from among] your slave-women. That makes it likelier that you will not be unfair. " (Quran 4:3)
    "You will not be able to be fair between wives, even if you are eager to do so. Yet do not turn away from one altogether, leaving her as if in a suspense. But if you are conciliatory and Godwary, Allah is indeed all-forgiving, all-merciful." (Quran 3:129)

    Appreciate you covering this. But calling this not a social issue and a political issue is very demeaning towards the millions of women who lose their basic humane dignity and security because of this. I understand it's also political but at the heart of it this is a social issue. Also the idea that muslims en mass hesitate to criticize polygamy is concerning.

  • @samirang21
    @samirang21 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    As a Ph.D. Statistician I will tell you one thing clearly: However strong your statistical trends are (in favor or against), they cannot replace the moral and ethical principles of modern society. Polygamy, triple talaq, etc. are medieval practices unfit for current societal norms. Whether they go down or up, no section of the population should be "legally" allowed to practice it. So, you may present 1001 statistics stating that those who are entitled to practice it legally are not doing so, but it does not replace the responsibility of the govt. and paid channels like you to preach it in any sense. State clearly that these practices must be made illegal (long back) if you plan to carry out responsible journalism. Sorry for my harsh tone, but I am appalled to see statistic after statistic which in short trying to undermine an effort of the current govt. to make an unjustified mediavall practice under the law to make it illegal.

Claiming that in some random district more Hindus are polygamous than Muslims is disingenuous as Hindus are treated as criminals for the same act that Muslims can openly boast!
    Further, just to mitigate the immorality of LEGAL pedophilia among Muslim community, Takla claims 15yrs as normal puberty! The fact is more than 50% girls attain puberty at age 11. (Hindus having sex with a girl younger than 11 can be hanged!!!!).
