I agree, his worst loss streak in a basho actually happened when he was trying crazy dumb stuff after so many ppl told him to "get new tricks", then got his first win by going back to a style familiar to him.
I think his weight is a big problem but the root of it is that he haven't had his head in the game the whole year, it's affecting his eating and probably his training. Blame recovering from his shoulder injury or the corona stress, his struggles seem to be internal.

It's honestly impressive that he lasted as long as he did in the top division. I personally didn't expect him to go longer then a few runs due to his size but having been in 9 basho is good enough for me to say he exceeded expectation. The demotion definitely hurts, but i think its a great timing for him to re-coup, re-train and think his approach to get back into the top division. We all talk about him need to up his weight and honestly i think its something serious he should consider. He doesn't necessarily needing a fat body like a Takakeisho who is 5'9, but muscle like a Chiyonofuji is what we all want to see him do. I think if he takes this demotion an build while in the Juryo divison for 2021, he is going to come back and surprise us even more then what he has been.

I am the most casual of sumo fan, and only started to kind of pay attention after I saw Enho and Chiyonofuji highlights. Enho is about my size so that made me really pay attention. I have no sumo “skill” or knowledge, but I think if he can put on 50lbs (total into 250lbs) of muscle he will be doing better. I’m 5’5 240lbs and play rugby, the best way to make sure the weight doesn’t back fire is trying to keep the midsection down. Obviously I don’t have a six pack but I don’t have back pain anymore since I started building muscle to lower fat over only strength.

I think he has the right idea with using a frontal charge more than a henka everyone knows is coming. The thing I think he’s missing more than weight, is how to use his opponent’s stiff arms to his shoulders at the tachi ai to his advantage. They know how to stop him from going in and under, but it isn’t perfect. Ura uses a similar charge, and his opponents will stiff arm him as well. Yet he has a way of twisting out to put them off balance, and get himself inside. I believe he’ll come back with a stronger set of moves. He isn’t injured (that we know of). You can’t get this high in the ranks by luck alone.

I don’t think that bulking up would give Enho better chances of winning right away. The problem, for me, isn’t the weight itself but the height he can’t really change. Bulking up might be a solution, I give you that, but if he surpasses something like 110/120 kg he’ll be in danger himself, not so much for the movement but for becoming an easy target for both pusher-thrusters and belt grapplers.
I think the solution might be an intense enhancing-strength weight training (while bulking up a little) so that he can not only (unexpectedly) try some frontal push if he can grab the belt but also throws might become easier to pull out. Chiyonofuji did the same and even Mike Tyson, which in the beginning was also short and a bit large (again, an easy target), focused on strength because short boxers was expected to be agile and mobile fighters and he developed instead a more straightforward peek-a-boo style. Enho is a rikishi who loves to do things outside of the box (and we love him for that) but now, maybe, a more orthodox sumo style might be that “outside of the box thinking” that no one expects. That’s my opinion.

He absolutely does not need as much muscle as them. Ishiura is insanely roided up and that kind of build clearly wouldn't be conducive to Enho's style (nor is it to Ishiura's). He was too light this past basho, but he already found his sweet spot in terms of size previously. Any bigger and he'd still be smaller and weaker than everyone else, but also encumbered by his weight.

@@radicalstanza3614 I know Enho can not afford losing his mobility at his size. The problem is that he is really too weak for division one. He is out of balance after one contact with any opponent. He seems to be not as quick as one year ago also. Maybe he needs some time in division two to build up something.

Kind of sad seeing him heading back to Juryo. I really believe that Hakuho is right in that he needs to put on some weight. But if Enho doesn't want body fat, I still think he should hit the weights and bulk up that way.
    Just my opinion.

I would say push his weight to at least 105kg and add muscle with more fat. He can get the job done. I weight 117kg with 173cm in height and I wrestle semi pro. The weight and extra muscle helps me out for sure. Against these huge men, it will help him have the power and dynamism of Chiyonofuji. Plus he is in the same stable as Hakuho, so he is in good hands. Time to hit the basashi and chicken liver my brother!

Enho desperately needs to find a way onto his opponents mawashi. Without that he's just getting tossed like a rag doll.
It's more than opponents knowing how to fight him. He's making really stupid decisions. Like what was that attack on Kaisei??? Was the plan to front flip over his shoulder, grab his belt from behind, and pull him down??? He is constantly charging straight forwards with his head completely down. How is he supposed to find grab on a mawashi when his eyes are always on the dirt when he goes in? He's not using his agility to move laterally anywhere but the tachii, and even then it's not to get a grip on the belt, because his eyes aren't anywhere near the belt.

I dont believe Enho can consistently win at the highest level at his current weight and strength. He has to wrestle perfectly every match. Even then, he'll win only about 50-60% of those matches.
I give him props for doing the near impossible. But if he wants to maintain a winning record against the best opponent sumo has to offer he needs to get bigger.

He needs more muscle on his upper body. He needs to bench and incline bench. His chest is too small and his arms are too. He’s simply getting blasted out of the ring. If this Keeps up he won’t last much longer in the top divisions.

not sure he will be able to come back heavier or stronger, because wouldn't he have done that by now? he even lost weight recently...so no idea what is going on, but its not the right trajectory for top division.

The other Rikishis hate him simply because it was and is particularily embarrassing to loose to little Enho. Loose to anyone but him. Now that they got the mesure of Enho, he is done. Note the rikishis' non verbal attitudes in victory in the last few bashos are dismissive and arrogant towards him. They figured him out, and he will never be allowed back in the Makushita division.
They hate him and it shows.

  • @slaiyfershin

Enho doesn't need more weight, he needs better techniques. Mainoumi's techniques were absolutely beautiful and varied. Enho has gotten stale using the same predictable techniques of twisting down and he doesn't get to the belt or leg as effectively as Mainoumi. He also needs to workout more seriously on muscles. His leg muscles are so weak that he blows away with every blow from the opponent. His arm muscles are so weak that he can't hold his own against a frontal charge without collapsing immediately. Mainoumi was short but fast and strong in strength and stability. Enho is only short and fast but crumples like paper. Enho could use about 6kg to match Mainoumi but weight is not an excuse, he just isn't good enough currently.
