  • Narnia's most terrifying villain is also one of the most mysterious. In this episode, we examine the life and legacy of Tash the Inexorable, the demon of Calormen, the Tashbaan god of death. Beginning with the Horse and its Boy. and culminating in The Last Battle, C.S. Lewis's terrifying character left a lasting mark on the Chronicles of Narnia.

    Tash truly is the most terrifying evil within the Chronicles of Narnia. Jadis was the one who started it all, Rabadash was a vile fool, Miraz felt like an obstacle at best, and the Lady of the Green Kirtle was the embodiment of doubt and despair. But Tash marked the beginning of the end.

    Today, I finished the Narnia saga. Last night, I started the Last Battle and after finishing that first chapter, I was glued to that book. So much that I stayed up ALL NIGHT to read the entire thing! There were so many callbacks and references to all the precious books. And after reading all seven books one after the other, the Last Battle's ending chapter filled my heart with so much happiness, and my eyes were bursting with tears of joy. When I go to Heaven, the first thing I'm gonna do, is find C.S. Lewis and tell him how magnificent of an ending he wrote for his masterpiece fantasy.

    Honestly, Tash was never an antagonist at all to begin with down to his actions. For the most part, he shows up when the actual antagonists don't want him to, and complies with the requests of Aslan and his followers while smiting those who used his name falsely. He did ruin Ginger's scheme and was outright hostile to the ape and that captain dude, all of which greatly helped Aslan. The guy looks scary as hell, but overall he has only ever helped the protagonists in the extremely brief moments he showed up as the scariest indirect ally.

    The simplest answer to me seems to be that Tash is Satan to Aslan's Christ. Tash claims himself to be equal to Aslan, is worshiped as a god, but is wicked and evil. He seems like an anti aslan (and certainly is the AntiChrist of Narnia) but he's not equal to Aslan in any sense. This particularly fits Lewis' view of Satan where Satan is not the advesary of God (as some Christians suppose) because as a mere fallen angel Satan couldn't conceivable oppose God and Jesus (instead in Lewis Satan is the advesary of the archangel Michael). I'm interested to see your next video (liked and subed) but at least imo this seems to fit Lewis' theology and fiction pretty well.

    Great video! I look forward to the next one on theories about Tash's origins. The two I already know of are that (1) he was one of the wicked creatures which emerged in the north when Jadis was there in hiding, and (2) he is either Earth's Satan in his Narnian form (like Jesus Christ as Aslan) or a Narnian equivalent.
    Perhaps, if you take Narnia's living stars as the equivalent to angels, Tash could be a fallen star? Evidently far worse than Coriakin. Just thought it married well with the Wormwood connexion.

      I second the Fallen Star theory. Maybe not Satan himself but definitely in close relation. I always found Jadis’ quote about “having to do certain things to obtain power” and that always made me think of Tash.

    Though always kind of thought that Tash being an Anti-Aslan more has to do with terms of morality/benevolence than omnipotence (what really is more depicted as Anti-God are Angra Mainyu and his brother or how the Devil in some branches of Christianity have him as being a near equal).
    But more as in Aslan is completely good whereas Tash is completely evil. Aslan is merciful while Tash is wrathful.

    Part of me wonders if Tash had been called into the world of Narnia, either by the ancestors of the Calormen as one of ancestral gods, or by Jadis, summoning dark spirits to try to break the barrier made by the tree from the Apple in the central garden. The fact that he isn't able to just wreak whatever havok he wants on the world suggests that he bound somehow--and while he is Aslan's opposite, he is nowhere his equal, so he stays in those bounds to avoid having the Great Lion unleash his wrath on him.

      If you tally it up totally! Like the skeksis (skekses plural?), Tash has four arms, a bird like head/beak, the stench of death and decay and clearly came from a higher plane of some kind but dwells on the earth now.
      Assuming CS Lewis hasn’t seen the Dark Crystal (a safe bet) I think the theory still works though! Maybe the withering of the grass isn’t Tash leaking his decay out but actually drawing energy and life from the grass, like the skeksis consuming essence. Perhaps Tash made his way from another world through the wood between the worlds into Narnia. Weak and dying in this new world, he drains the life of the world around him to survive. Aslan knows and clearly tolerates his presence in some way, perhaps out of divine sympathy, perhaps by decree of the Great Emperor beyond the Sea. Maybe there is no way to send him back, maybe his pool is dry but he is not fit for Aslan’s country, or maybe he’s not even sentient, a gaseous nothing without malice but without goodness, mindlessly consuming life force. In the deeply morality-driven world of Narnia, amoral creatures with great power are still bound by the deep magic but have no part in the greater plan for Aslan’s country beyond?

    • @DamonNomad82
      @DamonNomad82 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@richardbourton4523 It would truly be a safe bet that C.S. Lewis never saw "The Dark Crystal", as he died in 1963, and TDC wasn't made until 1982. The real question is if Jim Henson read "The Last Battle", and if he based the skeksis off of Tash. As far as Tash not being sentient, a scene in "The Last Battle" makes it clear that he is, as he speaks to the Calormene commander, Rishda Tarkaan, as he seizes him as "lawful prey".
