I picked GTA III. I will never forget him laughing as I beat somebody up with a bat after the first mission. "HIT EM AGAIN" he was cackling.

      I got my PS2 for Christmas 2001 when I was in grade 7. Then in March 2002 my stepdad took me to rent it and wanted to play it with me to check out the new system since the only game I had was madden. Nothing was funnier than when I came back from the bathroom and hearing my stepdad say “I have to pick up this hooker for a guy named Luigi” at the beginning of the game. 2 months later my dad bought it for me but my stepdad said that if I got caught stealing, getting in fights, and started seeing hookers I wouldn’t be allowed to play it anymore. I was 14 when I got it so I said cool. Then later the same year everywhere had Vice City sold out on release day and I was disappointed but my stepdad had to go to future shop to get something for the tv and I asked if they had it and the worker said I’ve been waiting all day for someone to ask for this, he then opened the box full of copies

    I honestly feel really bad for Asuka in all this
    You kill her brother in honestly cold blood after they/the Yakuza have treated you with the most respect, she hunts down and tortures an innocent guy - specifically in this sense - who she thinks is responsible, only to be murdered by your crazy ex. But somehow Maria is who Claude cares about enough to risk his life to save. And then possibly immediately shoots her after

    • @MrHammers
      @MrHammers  ปีที่แล้ว +155

      I know! Claude brought Asuka into the middle of his BS and messed up her whole family for little to no reason lol. But really Maria is to blame for it all, Claude coulda stayed employed with the Leone's for a long while

      Why go for an untrustworthy woman who constantly lies and got you in trouble when you could have a hot Yakuza gf
      For real though it would have been better if Donald Love hired else to kill Kenji so Claude doesn't look monumentally stupid for backstabbing the only faction who never betrayed him. Asuka was way more likable than Maria.

      The thing is Asuka had no issue having you backstabbing Salvatore so I see a bit of a double standard and very hypocritical when the same happens to her. I don’t see how Claude should care about criminals who are only using him to their benefit and nothing else. If you have ever played gta advanced you would know that Asuka isn’t as respectful as it seems, she betrays mike once she has no uses for him anymore. Kenji was a dickhead who didn’t know what respects mean and his annoying holier than thou BS.

    This is the prototypical 'you had to be there to really understand it' kinda moment. I will never forget the first time I was able to mow pedestrians down in a car for absolutely no reason. To grow up playing things like Super Mario and, at worst, fighting games like Mortal Kombat, the level up in violence, humor, atmosphere... the paradigm shifted forever. The way GTA3 changed games was monumental, everything else has been incremental.

      Same. I'll never forget the very first time I played it and realized I could steal a car and just drive around. Every GTA that came after this is objectively a much better game, but this one was by far the biggest revelation. Plus it has to be mentioned that 9/11 had just occurred, and for better or worse this game's dreary tone matched up with the mood of the time all too well.

    It is almost uncanny how similar our viewpoints are on this game. Everything you said about it is 100% on point. On the up side the overall atmosphere of the game is untouched still today, I have never seen another GTA with the same creepy ominous seedy feel that this one captures. GTA 4 tried to copy it but didn’t even come close, it was more just kind of dreary but still sunny and decent. This game is just straight up creepy and dark in every way. Also with the missions, god I hated that damn mission where you had to shoot down the plane. “Espresso 2 Go” was easy compared to this one. Because the god damn plane comes into the runway at 95 MPH and you have no time to shoot it down from the water, so I ended up doing the same thing. I finally drove to the airport and waited for the bastards to come head on at me with the plane so I could completely obliterate it. Well done though man, I have never seen an explanation to this game nearly as good as this one.😄

    After giving the ending plenty of thought I believe Claude killed Maria because she was the only person left that knew about his criminal ties he didn’t want to risk her snitching on him and wanted to move on with life also the fact that’s he deeply crushed from Catalina’s betrayal where he couldn’t possibly go on and find love again after being taken advantage in such a horrible way. I think Claude got his heartbroken more than anything and took it out on anyone who stood in the way of his goal of exacting revenge on Catalina and it being canon that’s he’s mute even in San Andreas makes a lot of sense that he’s not able to talk couldn’t explain how he felt other than with his actions. Claude was never a gangster more like a depraved man with a broken heart totally void of emotion because the woman he loved sold him out, and shot him leaving him for dead and jail just because she was cheating on him with Miguel and just because she’s a twisted psycho bitch where Claude like with CJ jn 1992 was only using him for her benefit.

      you're overanalyzing for nothing. he shot her because she's annoying for Dark comedy effect. Claude is not even a character he's just the man you play just like your online character only without the customization. the story was never the focus of GTA III (90% of the missions are not related with his revenge against Catalina) it was all about the revolutionnary gameplay if you look back at the previous games the stories were no better it was just somebody telling you to do something and if you look at the GTA III cutscenes well it's not really different it was just Claude receiving orders for a job without any interractions with other characters. they made him mute for that reason not to make him mysterious or anything. they didn't even bother giving him a name until San Andreas and they called him "Claude" and the reason is because some fans confused him with Claude Speed from GTA 2 because he looked exactly like the actor that played Claude Speed. see they didn't even bother giving him a proper appearance he's a copycat from a previous "character". it wasn't until Vice City when they started making efforts about the writing.
      what you are doing is literally analyzing a "character" that wasn't even written in the first place.

    Got this on the Xbox in the Double pack when I was a teen and replayed it sporadically on PC over the years, I've always found myself coming back to it due to it's shorter length and tone. It really does feel like the most unique GTA entry with it's Melancholic themes, lonely atmosphere and especially it's dreary setting where it's almost always overcast or raining.
    I recommend playing the unofficial "Remaster" which can be found on the steam guides as it bundles every best feature of every port onto the PC without going too far with mods as it brings some much needed quality of life improvements to the game.

    This is a very good retrospective, but to not mention how 9/11 affected this game is really missing the boat. It's part of the game's history. It pushed back it's release date by 3 weeks, changed the look of the police cars, eliminated any visuals of planes flying close to buildings, removed a mission that referenced terrorists, changed some of the pedestrian and talk radio dialogue and made it necessary to change the games original cover for North America

Most games were still linear back in the days and to read about finding your way on an open map, to get up on rooftops, basically to fuck around in an open city was something completely new and revolutional. Also many youtubers mention GTA3 wasn't so restrictive yet on how a mission has to play out, so solving a mission could play out differently like the devs intended if you was a bit more creative. This is basically something i really miss from modern games.
