Человек пишет искренне, мне кажется, что стараться на каждом ресурсе показать Россию с "лучшей" стороны - глупо, очевидно и немного по-советски. Лично я полностью разделяю стереотип о том, что русские поначалу более замкнутые, а потом вываливают на тебя всю подноготную, и сама ему соответствую. Только работа в торговле в студенческие годы меня немного научила small talk или как это по-русски.

When I lived in Russia I noticed how grumpy everybody looks all the time. My friend told me that they typically think that it's annoying how happy and friendly and FAKE we are all the time. Basically, it's "give me a reason to smile and be friendly" vs "give me a reason not to". And of course it's understood that not everyone is like that, it's just an overall impression one can get. 😊

I’m mexican and I also started learning russian a couple of years ago because of the same reasons as you. I just thought they’re super mysterious and interesting and wanted to know the language so I could understand what their deal is all about hahah
Anyways. If I can sum up what I’ve learnt about Russians is this: they seem mysterious because they ARE mysterious. They won’t trust you easily, so they’ll keep a distance at first while they overly analyse you and wait to be somewhat nicer to you (while still keeping a distance) until they finally decide you’re someone they like. However, once they decide they like you, they’ll be super generous and will try to help you with anything while also giving you a lot of gifts. This and an ocassional laughter is the only way you can tell that they actually like you
These things ) are indeed a way of adding a smiley face without being overly excited about something. It’s just like a way to make their message seem friendlier and nicer. The amount of )s are proportional to their mood))))))
As I said, I also found it super weird and kinda disappointing that absolutely no one would ever be flattered/ impressed when I told them I’m learning their language. It is literally the only culture I’ve seen that reacts like this with that. Still, my guess is that they actually like it but they won’t show it to you because of what I just explained before of them being mysterious people and suspicious about you at first.
I still don’t really get what their deal is about with flirting/dating and being extremely detached though, so I can’t really give you an insight on that lol

I put a picture once on dating site which I must admit was the ultra super duper best picture of me for which I got this spanish guy sending me messages (he also lived in Costa Rica), he was keen to meet. I was spending a couple of days hiking in the mountains in Costa Rica and decided to meet the day I was going back to the city. Anyway, it was obvious he did not like me, I guess he was expecting the girl on the picture which I can definitely achieve but I just needed a couple of hours. I thought we would hit it off as he also seemed to like hiking based on his profile pictures. Anyway needless to say he was really dry and uninterested so I said to him "look, let's just finish the evening here, it was nice to meet you bye" . I guess I was naive at the start thinking dating sites where the place to find love based on similar interests etc, it's really just a place to hookup, have some fun and saying next a lot. I did catch the drift after this and had a lot of fun so no harm done.

Hey, Damon! A Russian here :) the thing is we do get pretty overwhelmed when talking to foreigners because of how open they are (especially compared to us, cuz we don’t open up that fast). Things get worse if a Russian doesn’t speak English - in this situation he/she is both confused, scared and overwhelmed. unfortunately, I have to agree that there is a lot of misunderstanding between russian speakers and people from other countries.
believe me, we don't want to seem rude or not interested in a conversation, we are just shy! when we are abroad, we find it quite difficult to chat with others. there could be different reasons like language barrier or fear of being uninteresting company :)
btw, you were right, it is kind of smile and the russian people use it a lot. that means that we are like smiling and wanna show that we are in good mood
moreover, our weird ways of communication are a problem for ourselves. as for me, I really wanna find a person who learns English as I do, so we could become friends and practice the language together
