Hi there. I've been watching the videos for awhile now, especially more so since i bought my 20th AE gti, but im running into bit of an issue. Since i bought the car, initially inspecting it the problem wasnt there because he drove the car to meet me, and it was warm and up to temp when i looked at it. Drove it 4.5 hours home, no real issues other than a CEL for the o2 sensors because of the aftermarket exhaust stuff. BUT back to the temps. Warming the car up is a pain. it will idle okay but then itll start going from -20hg to -10hg on the boost gauge and the whole car will be super jerky. just sitting there at idle. I know you're not supposed to drive it til its warmed up, but i tried moving it in the driveway last night and when i put it in reverse, and tried to back up, the whole car bogged down and didnt really wanna move.. i have a video of the -20 to -10 thing too if you maybe wanted to see that? My best guess is there is a vacuum leak SOMEWHERE. but that doesnt make sense at the same time because it only happens when the car is cold?? anyways.. I love the videos, You are great at what you do! Any help is appreciated though haha.
HumbleMechanic hey hope all is well I’m having this issue where reverse will go in without pressing down making first gear really hard to find. I’m a ford tech owning a VW Jetta tdi manual trans. Any idea of what it can be?? I replaced the friction slider since that was worn out but still having the issue. Pls let me know what you think it may be. Thanks in advance
I'm just typing this comment to attest that, impossible as it seems, the difficult bushing can be installed without drilling the metal case. The Humble mechanic said in one comment that he was able to do it with a screwdriver, unfortunately that's all he said as far as I know. I don't know how he did it exactly, but gave me the confidence to try it myself. I did it in the following way (excuse my poor English): I installed the bushing in the shifter applying some vaseline, then inserted the shifter end inside the loop of the cable (with more vaseline). Now comes the step where I departed from the official dieselgeek procedure: I opened the snap ring with snap ring pliers, I put a little nut to lock the snap ring in an opened position (you can use whatever you want, I just happened to have a small nut near me), I glued a piece of sturdy wire to the nut and bent the wire in the shape I needed to insert it from above, along the shifter. Then it's just a surgery game, you'll need patience here. You need to insert the snap ring on the bushing, almost blindly, (I put a flashlight on the other opening of the shifter metal case, where you access the side-to-side bushing). Make sure the cable is completely pulled in the bushing or the crease where the snap ring must sit won't be accessible. I had to insert the snap ring with its opening facing down, because there is no room otherwise. Once you think the snap ring is in place, you give the wire a firm push downwards to remove the nut and lock the snap ring in the bushing. Insert your finger through any of the openings and make sure the snap ring is well positioned and won't fall off. It should spin on the crease of the bushing. If it doesn't, try to push the ring inside with your fingers or a screwdriver, it could be only partially inside the crease. It's a good idea to practice a few times outside the car, with the wire and the shifter with the bushing installed. If you're not able to insert the snap ring in the bushing using the wire-nut thing, don't even try to do it inside the shifter case. Good luck!
I am so grateful that you're creating content for those of us who drive MK4's! While there may be copious videos on youtube of them, the majority pale in comparison to the caliber of yours :)
This is so helpful for someone who wants a conceptual understanding of how the linkage works. I have a GT3 that's started to have a lot of slop, and this has helped so much understanding what was wrong.

If I watch enough of these R32 series vids, I'll be able to keep enjoying my' 04 GTI for many years to come; however, that sucks cuz I really want a good excuse to buy a '18 GSW. No need in getting rid of a perfectly good, capable car w/the only thing going against it is iits age (14yo) and it still has all of its original bushings. Other than that, there is nothing wrong w/the car to warrant a replacement and endure another car payment.
This mkiv project of yours is costing me a lot of money! Every time I watch an R32 vid I find something else I want to rehab on my mkiv. Already have the Sigma 5 installed and just bought the DG First Gear Getter to clean up the S2S movement (the other bushing are still good) that will be installed when I replace the brake cables if it ever stops snowing here. Gonna pick up a set of those Tyrolsport bracket bushing to finish the job as well.
This week I finally got the kit from Dieselgeek and yesterday I changed it. I can confirm what Charles said. IT IS POSSIBLE to do that from the inside of the car without removing box or driling hole. I don't have my own DIY, but if you have some technical knowlige, and you can make some things on your car, you can do it by yourself. Of course you need tools, like snap ring pliers, screwdrivers and other. The worst part was to get off front to back cable from the shifter stick and put the cable on the stick again with new bushings from dieselgeek on it. It is realy tight and it was the hardest part. I put snap ring on that bushing in one take. Other was okey. so IT CAN BE DONE FROM THE CABIN.
Gonna have to try this. Picking up a yellow 20th Anniversary GTI this Friday. The shifter feels decent but I feel like there's some room for improvement. Cars in impeccable shape. No dents, only a couple chips in it. Couldn't find rust on it anywhere. Only downside is no OEM seats. There's no backseat and front seats are Corbeau's. Also has an R Spec front bumper that's vinyl wrapped. It's gonna bit a little work but gonna move it back to OEM and preserve it. I only got to test drive it for a little bit but fell in love with it.

While driving my GTI 337 iin the street my shifter got stuck on 5 and 6 gear. It just wouldn't move out of that side. I pulled over, popped the hood open, and I managed to move the links out of 5 gear so I went back in and drove it without usimg 5 or 6 gear. It saved me a tow. I'm hoping the issue has to do with these bushings and not the transmission. Thanks for this video.

Did you repair it with the Diesel Geek bushings and shifter kit? If you did, I'm interested in better understanding how it's possible to replace the shifter cable bushings underneath the stick shift housing without removing the housing and without drilling a hole in the housing. This video briefly talks about it being a difficult job but not much more. Any additional insight from you, Charles or others with experience would be helpful.
I recently installed a forge short shift kit. And since I cant seem to shift into 2nd or 3rd without grinding. This is after a stage 2 clutch kit install as well. Bled the clutch. Adjusted the linkage many times. Referring back to the diesel geek video. And still no solution. Would the bushings make a difference in this? That's my next hope at least. If I double clutch I can usually get into 2nd and 3rd without grinding but even then sometimes it's not perfect. I do feel alot of play in side to side motion while the shifter is in any gear. 2013 gti.

The bell crank or the bushing part? Get a 1st gear getter from Dieselgeek
For the bushing part
My 2006 VW TDI beetle manual transmission is stuck in gear. The engine runs, but I cannot bring the shifter in neutral position. I was in the fifth gear when it got stuck. I need your help.
Brilliant! Really helpful.
I tried to adjust my linkage and after that I can't get 5th and 6th gear anymore. My bushings are shot, do you think because of the degraded bushings my link adjustments are not working out properly causing this issue?
For possible future reference is it the same set up as on my Audi A3 8p? Thank you
hi @humblemechanic - do you have replacement parts for the MK5 golf? That would be super cool!
what is the part number for the TyrolSport bushings for the shifter cable bracket?
What kind of type of grease should we use for knock/shifter, I saw there was one..
I’m trying to figure out what that black piece was by the assembly. Mine is broke. Causing me to not find 5th gear.
Do they fit on a Golf 7 shifter? is there any difference? i mean it looks similar but are they?(Golf 7 2.0 TDI). Cant find any bushing-set for a Golf 7.
Will this work for an 05 nissan altima with a stick shift? Mine is really loose and couldn't find any videos for it. I didn't know if this would be the same or would I have to keep looking.
Definitely something I need but I don’t have the time and money
Time is the hard one. Money is usually easier to make than time is to have
My mk4 doesn't go into 5th..I adjusted the linkages..still no 5th..when I shift in 5th its 3rd gear again..I have a wobbly shifter..do you this this can be the problem?
What is wrong with the 8 people who disliked this? What is there to dislike? It seems incredibly petty to me.
Thank you. I’m not sure. Based on a number of comments and talking with some other YT buddies a lot of people were very mean yesterday
@@HumbleMechanic H8ers gonna h8.
Any ideas why my shifter feels loose going in-between neutral and drive ? It's almost like it skips over neutral and goes straight to drive if I don't push the shifter to the side a little, thanks for any help
Hey Charles.
I lost reverse and 2nd because of bad bushings on my shifter box!
Hi, car detailer forced my reverse and now I don't have 5th and 6th, if this can fix my issue?
Ok where I your shop located? I need a new vw tech to take my GTI too
Hi Charles, how did you get the snap ring on without drilling a hole in the side of the box? Where did you sneak the snap ring pliers through?
A long screwdriver and some swear words. Lol
do they do a kit for a vw mk2 golf 1.6
I recently installed a forge short shift kit. And since I cant seem to shift into 2nd or 3rd without grinding. This is after a stage 2 clutch kit install as well. Bled the clutch. Adjusted the linkage many times. Referring back to the diesel geek video. And still no solution. Would the bushings make a difference in this? That's my next hope at least. If I double clutch I can usually get into 2nd and 3rd without grinding but even then sometimes it's not perfect. I do feel alot of play in side to side motion while the shifter is in any gear. 2013 gti.
Just got the last bushings out of the car, the ones at the transmission mount. Fuck those are such a PAIN. Now two orange bushings left and all can go back in the car tomorrow. :D
I want to cry, fuck doing those orange bushings with a vise, should've bought some vicegrips damnit. :"(
Swordie100 how did you do?
watching the play in the shifter before and after... I have this problem badly.. on to the to do list it goes
Does anyone know if these bushings are compatible with the older mk4 style(99.5) shifter? I was on there website but only saw this kit you used here???
Love the video, been watching alot lately and learning!
I have a 1999 mk4 GTI but I cant seem to find any brackets or bushings that will fit, because apparently the split is in the year 2000. any ideas? :D
Reason why my vws always broken bloody plastic shifter parts. I got an alfa romeo in for shifter repairs. The cables bushing is shot, the shifter mounting plate in the car is junk. Going to cost £225 for all new oem parts. Customer doesnt feel like he got a bargain anymore
Hey man how did you get the shifter ball Michelle out of the shifter assembly?
Hey Charles, quick question for you. Why did you post a link to the bearing shell from FCP euro when it also is included in the Uro tuning link? Are they the same part? Getting ready to do this rebuild on my R32 as well. Cheers
In case you didn't need the whole kit. It should be the same part.
Hi, I have Audi A3 8l , 1.6 benzine 2002 model and when I drive half an hour and warm up manual shifter get hard and sometimes doesn’t engage, 1st gear and reverse? Your suggestion really helpful for me.
Make sure the fluid is right
Hi HumbleMechanic ,
The fluid is okay.
Do you still have that notchiness in the shifter? That’s about the only thing I don’t like about the stock shifter in my jetta.
Yea it’s on the notchy side.
I'm about to buy my bosses 2004 jetta 1.8 turbo any suggestions??
Is there a link for the tyrol sport brass bushings?
Hello, where can I find the bushing kit?
My mk5 can't move pass 2nd gear. Any suggestions
Need to do this on my mk4
YES!
Hello I having problem shift on first and reverse, I have 2014 Jetta tdi cjaa engine, with 6 speed manual, is this kit work on my car?
PArts of yours are different. Be sure to get the right car loaded on diesel geek
That loose shifter is about 1/3rd as loose as the one in my BMW...
Damn
Just got an E30 and that thang is loose :') Just out of curiosity, how'd you resolve it?
@@aquillelange4128 For my E39, I had to pull the trans and replace the "shift pin detents", and the "shifter carrier bushings." Check out this excellent DIY: webspace.ringling.edu/~dplassma/bmw_diy/shift_pins/shift_pins.html
@HumbleMechanic would this kit work on a mk7 r?
what bolt goes on the shifter cover
Make a video about the dash please
gagu112 what are you interested in with the dash
HumbleMechanic i have an 03 Audi A6 C5, and over time the dash swollen, just like you have in the R32, near the vent, and near the A pillars.
It’s a pain to remove the dashboard, and in my case, all the dashes are like this, and it sucks.
And i want to see a way to fix it.
Thank you for the reply
my mk iv vr6 has trouble going into 1st gear sometimes but if i drop it in 2nd and put it back into 1st its smooth as butter, could this be a synchro issue or can replacing the bushings solve it? Love these R32 vids btw!
try and get it adjusted first.
How much will that cost if you have a mechanic do it for you ?
Does this kit fit in a mk5 gti?
do you have the first gear getter dimensions?
Will this work on Mk5eddy30
Ahhhh Lovely but will have to search for an alternative here as the shipment is crazy expensive and no alternatives
New camera?
Video quality seems much better.
Thanks! Same camera, different format on the output side of the editor. I am always testing something
I see that your first gear getter cracked as well, Did it crack when you put it in reverse for the first time after the install?
Nah, just that little bit. No issues after instal.
@@HumbleMechanic Yup, I figured. Mine cracked the same way and hasn't had a problem. Just wondered if anyone else experienced this!
Does anyone know why my shifter doesn't return to center when in neutral?
Do you know if the diesel geek kit will fit a 2005 VW PASSAT 2.0 TDI?
I think it's a different setup. You might have better luck looking for an Audi shift kit from like an A4/S4
@@HumbleMechanic thank you.
Wow, this is the first time a TH-camr answered my question.
Should I put white lithium grease around the ball?
I use Super Lube. It has a wider temperature range and does not break down the plastic
Need to do this for the W8 Passat. Any recommendations?
Actually not really. I’m sure there are some Audi parts that would be a better upgrade.
Why do they make the mk3 so difficult to replace the most important bushings
Curious, how many miles on the clock when you did this to your R32? TIA
140k or so
I am replacing my stock shifter to a short throw shifter, and people tell me to replace the bushings. They weren’t specificIs, is this what they are talking about??? I have a 2002 MK4 Volkswagen Jetta 1.8T
Yep! I would do all the bushings. That will make big time difference
Probably just going to drill but does anyone have a brand for the 90 pliers that works with the no-drill method?
GT's Garage and Tech used Harbor Freight 90s and 45s and had no luck and ended up drilling so it seems the pliers do matter (or he just wasn't patient enough).
"Nobody wants to handle a sloppy shifter", lmao....
Hey I was wondering if you could maybe point out some good site to get parts for mk2's because I see u do videos on vw' s but only on the newer ones
What type f things are you Looking for?
dylan ashmore germanautoparts.com
I have a 99 mk4 with the mk3 style shift system it sucks horribly shifting especially to first and second
I just swapped out mine for the o2j! Much better
Anything like this for a
89 s5 RX7
how fast do you run the 1/4 mile with the new shifter?
Too fast. Too furious. 😂 no plans on 1/4m runs for this car.
Do you have something like this for the MK3???
Not yet. But soon.
@@HumbleMechanic thanks!!
