    How To Turn A Turkey Pot Call
    Hey guys on this weeks video I will be showing you how I used the lathe to make a Turkey Call / Pot call / Slate call / Friction call, what ever name you know it by.
    Tools/ Materials:
    Wood Lathe - amzn.to/2EOi4Yb
    1 inch Roughing Gouge - amzn.to/2HPeOQx
    Spindle Gouge Set - amzn.to/2K1yvWW
    Turning Chisel set - amzn.to/2V6uUrV
    Band Saw - amzn.to/2V7GenI
    Drill Press - amzn.to/2G111UE
    Sand Paper - amzn.to/2YOI4fj
    Glass surface - amzn.to/2FR60pV
    slate sound board - amzn.to/2Vl7waa
    Bottle stopper mandrel - amzn.to/2WLjDh1
    3/4 x 16tpi to 1" x 8tpi adapter - amzn.to/2UjvLt3
    Caliper set - amzn.to/2CZyxsy
    I started with a 1" thick piece of cherry a little over 4 inches in diameter. I used a drill press to drill the center hole all the way through and 8 holes equally spaced around the center hole about 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch deep, I made a Jig for this so I could make multiple calls with out having to measure every time.
    I first put the call on the lathe with the holes facing outward using the bottle stopper mandrel. I surfaced the call's bottom and rounded off the sides making sure to put a slight concave shape in the middle to make a good grip. Then I sanded and finished the bottom of the call and turned it with the front facing outward.
    I then surfaced the front, And began to mark for the shoulder that would hold the glass striking surface. Then I decided where I wanted my pedistool to be in the middle to hole the sound board and began to cut away all the wood in the middle of the call. Follow the instructions in the video to be sure you have proper spacing between your soundboard and the striking surface. After It was shaped the way I wanted I sanded and finished the inside of the call to protect it from any moisture that may try and build up inside the call.
    Finally I glued in the soundboard and the striking surface, use what ever glue you feel comfortable using. Ive seen people using CA glue, Goop, Gorilla glue ect. Be sure to pick the one you think will hole up the best.

    I learned that the glass is on top. I always thought the slate was on top. I want to try to make one of these.

    • @BuildStuffwithAJ
      @BuildStuffwithAJ  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Actually, while doing my research for these before making them I found out that you can use any combination of slate, glass and metal in any order that you want, It will effect the sound and some people like one method more than others. So basically it all comes down to personal preference.

      It's called o.b. shine juice. Search for it on TH-cam and you will find the recipe and how to use it properly.

    I like using the bottle stopper mandrel as well. Check out my copper pot call on my channel. Good job!

      The mandrel has made it alot easier! and that copper call looks good! I've not turned any epoxy yet. I actually just made a couple of carbide cutting tools so I could start turning some epoxy projects in the future

    Just got a lathe this week and thought about making a pot call today and came across this video. Thanks it’s very informative.
    Looking at this basic design I am thinking about drawing one up and run few prototypes on my cnc. They will be exact but quick to make and I should be able to make changes and see what the sound/tones do. Once I come up with one that sounds and preforms good it can be reproduced in a couple of minutes. I will wind up making a hybrid in the end using the cnc to cut the pot and lathe to do finish.

    • @BuildStuffwithAJ
      @BuildStuffwithAJ  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! Yea a CNC would definitely get the job done a lot faster. Good luck getting the tone your looking for!

    this might be a stupid question, but is there any difference in a chuck and a mandrel?

    • @BuildStuffwithAJ
      @BuildStuffwithAJ  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes sir there is a big difference, the chuck has jaws that hold the wood in place, it's similar to a faceplate but you don't need to put screws in the wood. A mandrell is a small diameter metal cylinder that you use for hollow projects like pens and duck calls ECT.

    Use silicon for gluing it also dampens any hard knocks your call may take. CA glue breaks down and chips off after long periods of heat

    Great video and call, I’m looking forward to getting into call making myself. What RPMs are you turning at throughout the process?

    • @BuildStuffwithAJ
      @BuildStuffwithAJ  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! I'm glad you liked the video and the call! Something with a small diameter like this I usually turn at a pretty high rpm usually between 2500 - 3500rpm. I tend to get smoother cuts at those speeds.

    Nice work. How wide should the pedistool be or does it matter?

    • @BuildStuffwithAJ
      @BuildStuffwithAJ  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I dont think I ever actually measured how wide the pedistool was, I am sure some might argue it makes a difference but I couldn't tell much of a difference from call to call and I never measured it, I always just eyeballed it lol

    • @bigslam5151
      @bigslam5151 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Every measurement with the pedestal absolutely makes a difference.

    • @davidsanbeg2335
      @davidsanbeg2335 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      And I'd add that some people put a hole in the pedistool and some don't

    I like your turkey call why do you use the soundboard for

    • @BuildStuffwithAJ
      @BuildStuffwithAJ  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! I'm glad you liked the video! The sound board changes the tone slightly. I can't really explain it but if you hear them side by side you can tell a difference. It makes it sound better in my opinion

    • @superdave577
      @superdave577 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BuildStuffwithAJ So I am just getting into making my own Pot calls. I know that sound boards come in many different types, do you feel that one is better then the other? Like Walnut is better, or maybe glass etc.. Doesn't really matter and I am sure it all has to do with how you want the call to sound but I am just curious.

    • @BuildStuffwithAJ
      @BuildStuffwithAJ  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@superdave577 I'll be completely honest, I couldn't tell a difference when changing sound boards. The top of the call is what really makes the difference in my opinion. And that is all up to personal preference. I've called in turkey using all of them before.
