Actually, Vanitas looking like Sora doesn't just exist to confuse us... Sora's Japanese VA said "man I'd like to play a bad guy in this series someday", and Nomura took the most literal route to that possible.

The actual reason Vanitas looks like Sora is because Miyu Irino wanted to play a villain. And since Nomura didn't really have any plans for the masked boy standing beside Xehanort in the KH2 secret ending, he kept Miyu's request in mind while writing the character.

Still, if the fact Vanitas looked like Sora had an impact on the plot, I think the reveal would've been... well... more impactful.
I was extremely pissed at how they ruined BBS secret ending in 0.2. The moment Aqua cries when realizing she has a sliver of hope in that special boy she once met is probably the best and most emotional moment in the whole game. Having her knowing about Sora already completely ruins it.
To be fair, the realm of darkness can mess with people’s memories. She probably forgot. And once Ansem in the RoD said his name, she finally remembered. It does kinda explain why she cried too, as she only met Sora once. If she didn’t about Sora saving the world, she probably would have been more confused than tear up.
@@BobbyTheGamerOfJUSTICE That can be an explanation, but really, that feels more like headcanon. The game doesn't really line things up that way. Aqua describes every familiar scenery in the realm of darkness the way she remembers them. Aside from some really minor things, all of the important details are accurate. So, it gives very little reason to think that her memories are off.
Edit: And even if it what you say is the case, Pablo's point still stands. Aqua knowing about Sora from Mickey still undercuts the impact of Blank Points.
Honestly BBS in general doesn’t fit very cohesively at all with established plot points, and makes a lot of characters just seem incompetent. (Mickey in kh2 can’t remember Apprentice Xehanort initially, but then it turns out he knew the guy as an old man and thought nothing about another person involved with darkness having the same name?? absolutely incredible). But the absolute disregard of Blank Points in favor of what 0.2 disclosed was just criminal. Blank Points was probably one of the few times a player can actually experience an emotion in BBS outside of annoyance, and while it’s not BAD that 0.2 had Aqua and Mickey meet up again, it could have been so much better written in so many different ways that could have easily NOT ruined nearly a decade’s worth of what story already existed.
Yeah, my main problem with 0.2 is that plot hole. And it would havd been so easily avoidable. Just make Mickey not reveal names, just make him say that his friends will help him to close the door. It's a bit cheap but look, no plot hole. Maybe let's add that when they see Riku Aqua is wondering if it's the same kid she saw before, but after all the time it passed, she had problems to remembering certain stuff.
@@soul6733 If nothing else, that bit you suggested about Aqua seeing Riku would at least give some ground to the "Realm of Darkness messes with memories" excuse, because as far as I can tell, the RoD messes with people's hearts, not necessarily their memories. Heck, in KH3, Aqua was shown to remember Sora and Kairi just fine.

Funnily enough they actually briefly mention that in enchanted dominion but technically that isn't the case because princesses of heart have complete hearts with only light whereas ventus's heart isn't complete without the darkness.
I completely agree with your distinction between 'confusing' and 'annoying.' 'Convoluted' also works. It makes me think of the dual-wielding in KH2; I'd _assumed_ that Sora's friends were letting him _hold the physical manifestation of their hearts_ because they love and trust him.

Uh...no, it was very clearly stated since that very game it was because Roxas could dual wield and him joining back to Sora meant that now he could also dual wield, then they explained that the reason Roxas could dual wield was because Xion fused with him, so if you're gonna blame a game for that particular unnecessary explanation blame Days not BbS.
@@lyricalmage No. Sora and Roxas dual wielding IS because Ventus was inside Sora. Xion keyblade is just a fake. Or as Riku put it, a sham. Like the artificial keyblade Ansem had in KH1. And Xion once she died, she went into Sora. Not Roxas.
The fact that there's very serious lore discourse happening to explain _why characters can also use their left arm_ is kind of my point. They needed to write such bloated, circuitous plot twists to continue selling mystery, that it muddles the analogies they're trying to make about human relationships.
And it's not _just_ the dual-wielding thing. Everything in the series is written this way. That was just a single example.
I adore Kingdom Hearts but I wish it used efficient, punchy analogies to really hit you in your gut, rather than arguing like lawyers about whose heart invented multitasking.

So they really had to retcon the best part about BBS just so they can forcefully tie Aqua to where she is in KH3?
The best part about the secret ending was the emotional moment that Aqua, even when she's stuck in eternal darkness with no way out, finds out that a boy carries on the hope that the world can be saved, this boy they met became a hero. In spite of KH's terrible writing, moments like these are rare. And you retconned it.
Nomura's trying hard to retcon things because he wants to pretend it's all planned out creates more problems than they fix.
I mean, it does honestly make more sense this way in my opinion. Aqua probably forgot about Sora saving the world in KH1 (as people can forget things in the RoD). And once Ansem said his name, she finally remembered. It does make more sense when she cried about this. As if she hadn’t known about Sora, she probably would have been more confused than tearing up about it.

Her secret ending in BBS was great, they could've just as easily rewritten 0.2 to just take that into account and still end up where it can be picked up on KH3 but they did it this way.
@rohan Terra DID say he was in the realm of light, somewhere. His ghost-like figure that is. It’s no wonder that she probably assumed it could have been Terra saving the world, as she doesn’t know (or remember) that Terra was being possessed by Xehanort.

Like I always thought it was strange that mickey and her didn't even hug or have any emotional payoff after being missing for so long (for pete's sake they have the most duel bosses together)
Not to mention how yeah aqua was the silver lining to her game and yeah while I enjoy the variety of attacks you can make there's deffinetly limiations that make going through it on consoles feel cumbersome.

Actually, the Realm of Darkness messes with your memory too, so I think Aqua forgetting about Sora, that she heard just once, is pretty reliable

@Masticatious You tell me, don't forget the part where they are about to fight the demon tower for the 1000th time and she just says "it can't be'" then she drops her keyblade and gets engulfed by it without offering any resistance. With so much rebooting of the characters Aqua was the only one I had hopes for before KH III came out, but when the whole Aquanort topic became a thing in the internet I was very disheartened, 0.2 may had done a bunch of awful things to the overall plot but one of the few things it did right, (and very appreciated) was to give Aqua good character development, then they throw that to garbage with the whole, Aqua getting dark thing. which I bet you was only because Fans wanted Sora to fight Aqua. That whole plot twist was completely pointless. I really wanted to believe that Aqua would recover and come out shining with glory, but we all know now that never happened. *sigh*.

Its a lot more likely then you think. Young Joseph Joestar is voiced by the same person who voices Young Xehanort, and Old Joseph Joestar is voiced by the same person who voices Ansem Seeker of Darkness. Also Ansem SoD has a stand, the Dark Guardian its canon name: *The Person Behind* (You)

“Would you like a delicious ibuprofen pill” is one of those jokes that has become a permanent part of my speech
Since part 1's release, I had the chance to play through all of BBS FM. This game's whole story needs another draft. This is the most the series has ever needed "just talk." Ventus never explains to the other two about the X-blade. When trying to convince Ventus to go home, Aqua and Terra both decide to not tell him about Vanitus. One of Aqua's missions is to escort Ventus back home, and when Ventus offers to travel with her, she says no and doesn't give any reason. Eraqus just got cheated out of a role in this story.
The second half of the worlds are much better than the first half though. Unlike the first trio of worlds, where Aqua somehow arrived last at all three, the second trio of worlds actually have a defined order for each character. Terra arrives at Deep Space first, Ventus goes to the Coliseum, and Aqua goes to Disneyland. Then they each rotate counter-clockwise. Players also get all of their movement abilities, and the characters no longer feel like complete ass to control.
This game is much worse than I remembered. I thought BBS was better than 3DS, but they're about at the same level. Command Styles activate automatically and can leave you vulnerable on start-up. Bosses have frustrating amounts of stagger resistance, or no stagger at all. Many of the flashier deck commands and combo finishers leave you completely vulnerable for abuse. None of the enemies or bosses were worth saving for repeated fights either. I'm convinced the Lingering Will from KH2FM is from alternate timeline.
Whenever aqua meets ansem the wise at the end and cries makes sense to me for one reason, its not after they seal the door. Its after KH2. And even though time doesnt technically exist in the realm aqua obviously still moves in time or else she wouldnt move or speak or even do anything at all. Aqua meets a man on a beach after being alone without hope, she hears that the kid she helped to seal the door is still out there fighting for the light, it would be emotional to someone lost in despair
To be more accurate, Lingering Will is inhabited by leftover thoughts and feelings rather than Terra's mind. The localization kind of a made a boo boo there, giving the impression that Terra's spirit or essence was possessing that thing, since "mind" gives off different connotations compared to mere "thoughts," which COME from the mind rather making up the mind itself.
When I saw the Keyblade Graveyard all I could think of "is this Unlimited Keyblade Works? Nomura you damn Chuuni"

You should do a metal gear story summary thing too, I would really enjoy that cause I've never played all of them but i want to know the whole story and I'm sure others will enjoy it too.

I mean, considering that the Nobodies with X's woven into their designs don't show up until KH2... he had the Recusent's Sigil planned by about then... at least, that's what I always assumed.
I feel Nomura works on a mix of planning big plot points, and bullshitting things into symbolism. In the KH2 OP, there's a shot of a seashell on the beach getting washed away by a wave. In KH Days, this specific seashell design is *heavily* associated with Xion.
From what I can gather though, Xion was planned after KH2 wrapped, meaning that this was more so taking a visual motif and tying it to a plot-point. Some might claim that writing by the seat of your pants is less intelligent than plans... but Nomura clearly planned *some* of it, and hell, as long as you can make the bullshit "meaningless detail into foreshadowing" retconning work...
Well, let's just say there's a reason so many people enjoyed Homestuck.
At best he plans one game in advanced.
@@fightingmedialounge519 Again, the big twist of DDD was planned by at least Kingdom Hearts 2: Final Mix. That's 2007 to 2017, a planning gap of 5 years.
We know he must have planned it due to scenes added to KH2:FM where certain Org Members had meetings in their room. These were new cut-scenes and only featured Nobodies with X's in their designs. Furthermore, Birth By Sleep made a HUGE deal about Braig gaining a scar and an eyepatch, and by his next appearance having slight changes to his design.
Not to mention some KH2 foreshadowing in KH1:FM, which is a planning gap of 2002 to 2005.
Not everything is planned far ahead, but some things are!
Except nomura didn't know if he there was going to be a second game and only made the secret movie as fun little what if, DDD came out in 2012 and honestly the x thing was only really presented as a big deal in birth by sleep. Again, nomura does some planning but mostly leaves things open ended so that he can add what ever new idea he just came up with.
You very clearly just lined out what I like about some of his writing. Mind you I f*cking despise Sora, Donald, and Kairi. But retroactively adding symbolism just makes me feel more of a connection to characters, the story, and the non-disney worlds. My least favourite parts of the KH story is Sora interacting with Disney and my favourite is Organization 13 members or Terra, Ven, & Aqua. When he gets to play around with his own wild ideas and connect them in the weirdest ways it just gets me invested.
@@fightingmedialounge519 In fact the above one said since KH2 FM which came out like 1-2 years later after the og KH2. Those twists of KH2 most certainly weren't planned back during production of KH2 (since Nomura wasn't even sure if the series would continue). But once he got white paper to continue...
Not mentioned, but the best part of Terra and Xehanort's meeting is when Xehanort points like "Look!" and Terra actually hesitates before doing it.

I don't know why, but the sudden cut to the Orphan of Kos bit makes me crack up--even for that split 2 seconds of it. Was a good watch all the way through.

Terra was only guilty of 2 things for me; agreeing to guard an unknown chest for a pirate, and freeing a prisoner based off hearsay. Beyond that, I have no qualms with his social maneuvering with villains, at least no more than I do with every other freaking playable character in the series.
I don't even know if I can get behind his admission of "I was stupid and helped Xehanort do it." First of all 99% of this was Eraqus' fault. Not even considering that he tried to kill both his sons, but also because he raised ALL his children to be naive, didn't help one deal with his darkness in a healthy way, AND set the precedent that they should respect good old face-scarring Xehanort. But back to the killing Ven thing, I would not call beating the murderous old man over the head "stupid." That is the only contribution Terra had, and it was justified. And beyond that....Terra didn't even do anything to help Xehanort during his whole campaign....like....nothing. All he did was go explore worlds and find Xehanort like Eraqus told him to do, and all that amounts to nothing in Xehanort's grand schemes. In reality, Terra only helps Xehanort at the very end of his campaign. And that's by being dark enough a vessel to be occupied. Which honestly was already set up to happen the moment Eraqus told them all to go fight all the unversed. Terra fights the darkness in himself all that time, and in the end it's every challenging enemy, including Eraqus, who inevitably trigger the big darkness in Terra. Not sure what Nomura was going for but.....what the hell?

I know it seems stupid for Terra to give in to the darkness, but keep in mind he had to watch his master (who was like a father to him) die and now Ven was shown to have lost his fight so Ven was clearly shown to Terra to be in serious danger. I think it is pretty understandable for him to give in to darkness. I mean anyone would be angry in such dire events so it is understandable that he couldn't control his darkness and rage.
it's also not like anger is something you switch on and off sure Terra knew that using the darkness was what Xehanort wanted but at that point he was so pissed at xehanort he couldn't help himself

I mean, with the thing about Aqua not remembering what Mickey told her about Riku and Sora, arguably she could have just forgotten for a split second and desperately latched on to the idea maybe Terra or Ventus are somehow back on there feet and doing all right in realm of light, even if we assume for her it hasn’t been all that much time since the events of BBS, she’s been in a pretty stressful environment, I could believe she might not be firing on all cylinders, even if only from sheer mental exhaustion.

I think the Vanitas looking like Sora twist, while it is a bit of a twist for the sake of a twist, has a meta function of sorts rather than playing a heavy role in the plot. Even if you have played only a single KH game prior to BBS, you have grown a connection with Sora yourself and have him pictured as the embodiment of what Whitney Houston was talking about in The Greatest Love of All. So subverting his likeness into a sinister being who is there to aid the bad guy adds an extra layer to the player's perception of the game. Had it been Ventus with yellow eyes and black hair, it would have way less impact on the player. Seeing the familiar face makes this confrontation with a seconds ago faceless minion personal in the lightning fast way that it does (not for Ventus or the plot but) for us. Also it helps deepen the connection between Sora and Ventus. It makes the fact that 358/2 people live inside Sora click a little bit better.

The way you talk about this game being one from your childhood but yet you can't help but note turn a blind eye, even through the rose tinted glasses of nostalgia, makes me shed a tear. I totally get it. This game is like Kid Icarus Uprising, for me. Wacky and fun to play but unmistakably without it's flaws. You should be proud that you can accept the flaws in something which you love.
This may be the only context ever in which someone would describe you but you're mature.
