He is my beloved friend, music mentor and family. Growing up i airways what to him about music. When i'd brag that i'd seen the ABB he would remind me he saw them 5 times w Duane. While i know he cant hear this right now I'm playing this as loud as i can in defiance, in sadness, in anger, most mostly in love. I love you dearly, Neal.
All things change, I remember Dicky Betts AND Duane, nothing is as good as the original but, this iteration is as good as any other. The fact they're keeping alive a style of music, the open jam ala Grateful Dead, is a testament to the free flowing life we all enjoyed then. You want to hate on something, hate on the prepackaged, processed and sampled crap that's passing for music today. It takes little to no real talent to steal riffs, toss them together and call it music. Just one old man's opinion.
from a woman named after the song by the love of a great father (who did love Dickie Betts) , but will always love the Allman Brother's! one of the great things hes passed on to his daughter, marty whitton

I'm so spoiled - I have seen them 9x or 10x times, and with BB King and Buddy Guy, Susan T several times, Greg Allman - I'm with this highly fortunate crossover gerneration - I hear these drum lines and slide riffs in my sleep every night - Derek, Warren, and all the 'conversational' back and forth with these gentlemen non-stop. Lucky, lucky, me.
I named my daughter Jessica after this song. I played this and James Taylor while feeding and playing with her, She is now 29 and gave me 3 beautiful grandbabies. Thank you Jessica

Been a fan of them since my late teens. Saw Derek Trucks when he was about 12 or 14 @ Under the Street in Durham NC when it was still open in approx 1991. Got his pick and told him I’d join him of stage someday...because he was already that frigging good and I foresaw myself playing blues rock on large stages someday. My musical goals have changed over the years, but I’m grateful that I’ve be privy to watching the ABB’s legacy grow and expand. These guys are a treasure.
Dicky Betts named this after his toddler daughter Jessica. He tried to capture the way she moved and played in the melody. This is a great song. Trucks and Haynes are great players and did it justice. The band was great. I hope we don't lose melodic jam bands like this in the future.
There may be a few different players in the ball game but this band still can rock the shingles off any venue and jam every song better than any group ever.
Amen! Trucks is a huge asset to keeping this band alive and thank God for Warren! He will forever hold a place in my book for greatest song played on slide with Blue Sky!!
why not just enjoy it for what it is? Why this constant trolling/hating? These two guys are carrying the torch for great playing, composing, collaborating and all you have to offer is "it ain't as good as...." In fact this IS the Allman Brothers Band, get used to it. They may not be the same without Dickey true, but they are pretty damn great too.
Yeah, I don't really get why people troll to begin with, but here it's just weird. Enjoy or Don't Enjoy and keep it moving is how I look at it. #whatchagonnado
+bullguit I agree with you 100% Warren and Derek are great players in their own right. Derek is a young legend IMO This is some kick ass guitar playing!
I think it's fairly legitimate to say that Derek Trucks can never BE Duane Allman as well as Duane Allman could, Eric Gales BE Hendrix and all that. There was a highwater mark for originality set by the originals that can never be met, because somebody else will always be playing SOMEBODY ELSE'S songs. Personally, I think it's a compliment on the part of younger musicians to treat the Allman Brothers, Hendrix, and Grateful Dead songs as "new standards" in the same way you'd treat "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl" or "Born Under a Bad Sign" as standards - you don't HAVE to wait for people to die, do you? Some great musicians just DON'T write very well, and I'd rather hear them play the best songs they can find than try to force themselves to rewrite the same things over and over. Derek & Warren were members of the BEST ABB cover band I'd ever heard. But "Jessica" misses Chuck....

I have the pleasure of making music with really good musicians. I consider myself blessed. We were raised on this music. I'm playing southern rock, jam, classic, R&B and blues with a group of guys I've known for 30+ years. All fantastic players who play from the heart. We all have day jobs to pay the bills but on weekends the 6 of us go out and play songs like this from The Allman's and so much more. This music will continue because real music lovers will keep it alive. All the sampled, processed, auto-tuned horse shit we hear today is so incredibly fake. There are always exceptions of course but the majority is dreck and it's here and gone in the blink of an eye. Songs like Jessica are timeless for a reason. We've lost so many artists from this beautiful era of music. Just from The Brothers alone -> Gregg, Duane, Berry, Butch, Lamar, Dan, David and "Woody". RIP
This version sounds extra sweet. I think Derek's harmony is higher than the original and Warren is playing the root melody. It's beautiful. Warren's a beast and Derek is lethal on the guitar.
Shut up. Close your eyes. Lay back. Enjoy, This is beautiful music. Maybe one day this will be popular again! This is so smooth and silky, like floating on the ocean.
If you never got to see this band live, especially with Dickey Betts you truly don't know what you missed. Me & my best friend followed these guys & the grateful dead around for several years. Those were the days before everyone had a cell phone held up in the audience. People dancing & spinning. All I can say was it was some of the happiest times of my life. It's sad how times have changed. God bless all.
Got that right, I was lucky to have seen them many times but the best were seeing them in 1970 with the original line up. First was at RFK Stadium in DC then at American University. Those were the best days of the Allman Brothers , hungry to play well & that they did. All the line ups were awesome but never will they surpass the days of old with Duane & Dickey, Berry, Jaimoe Gregg & Butch firing on all cylinders.
@@andrewhoran7088 Free Boston Common, August 1971....Full Band. Friend dragged me to it, I didn't have a clue who they were. Man, did I get an education that day!
This has been my favorite song for over 40 years. I’ve heard many interpretations, but they all maintain that sweet, playful, spiritual groove created by Dickey Betts, as his infant daughter, Jessica, played at his feet.
Wow... First time I've heard the "new" lineup.. been listening to them since the "Gregg and Duane" and "Duane and Gregg" albums... good to hear the tradition was still carried on. This is a good jammed out version. Rest in Peace, Brother Gregg.
OMG this song brings back so many memories as a teen growing up, it reminds me of Saturday afternoon on a Summers day, cruising the seaside roads where i used to live, in an open wheeled roadster, lovin it!!!
Otel is a monster on that bass. If anyone has been following Dead & Co, you'll know what a virtuoso he truly is. Derek is also a prodigy, The Derek Truck Band, before Susan came along, was reaching some very amazing and musically interesting heights in their playing and songwriting. Warren is amazing too. Truly good bands evolve, it's a shame some fans are so stuck in the past they can't enjoy it
New to Allman Brothers but that was one of the first things I noticed listening to this video... dude is SHREDDING! and it's like all in the background. (I know that's how bass goes. You do so much work and rarely get noticed as much, but he is phenomenal here!!!!! Wish the camera showed him off a bit more!)
that was pretty much spotless! derek and warren just doing their class act of improvising and being the best musicians in the planet earth. The rest just playing their heart outs too. This was good. Thanks for the upload. What a treat!
Derek and Warren are two of the best guitarists alive ... But. .. Dickey is the vital ingredient that the ABB could never replicate. This is why they continued playing Jessica and Elizabeth Reed every night, despite his absence
This is every bit as good as the original and these boys been playing this along time so just enjoy it as it is done. Thank god they are carrying it on.
they still love playing this song, don't they? the joy of jessica is alive..... hard to believe the first time i heard this song it was '73 or '74.... on an 8 track. didn't even know who the allman brothers were.... i just knew i loved this song.... rip, mr allman.
I want the original and this version played at my last party, will never get tired of this instrumental ,its all good ,keyboard, percussion , the guitar is fantastic on both, no lyrics to listen to, I love it , makes me tap my feet & smile every time I hear it..
That was an ABSOLUTE PLEASURE to listen to! I actually jumped out of my chair to give a standing ovation in my own living room. Too bad it was only 13 minutes. ;-) I guess people need a break once and a while. Thanks again for the post.
I am so glad to finally read a comment where someone else is "full concert mode" like I get. I even flick my BIC! My kids are 15 and 25 now, so they are used to it...in fact when I started whooping right at that beautiful climbing solo,my girl came out of her room and looked at her brother and said, "Here goes mom!"I have not been to a big festival since moving to Hawaii, and my spirit yearns to break free! Thanks TH-cam!
We Lost A Legend Today ~~ RIP Gregg Allman ~~ Thank You For The Decades Of Music And The Memories. They Will Live On Forever But A Voice And Talent Like Yours Can NEVER Be Duplicated ~~~ 5-27-17
For once in TH-cam, an Epic description that fits the performance. I'm biased of course because I love this number, but this is a great live recording with all the beauty of the studio version.
I'm going to miss this band first time I saw them was 1975, Jessica was the first song I ever heard from them we named our daughter after this song. Since 1975 I have seen them 50 + times . 3 times in one week . Never the same show . Most bands play songs note for note. Not the Allman Brothers that's what made them special.
I haven't seen them, but I have seen dave matthews band live a good handful of times, and i know what you're saying. Every concert is different and new in its own way. I'm getting chills just thinking about it.
Saw them live twice in early '70s and I agree w/ you; they would go off and do their improvisations and that was truly impressing and amazing. They really touched your soul.
shizzlenoits Gregg isn't the only original member. Butch and Jaimoe are originals. Derek is part of the family, nephew to Butch Trucks. They're not just glorifying the past. These are *amazing musicians* giving us fans the gift of their music.
Colleen Meegan Derek IMO is a bit overrated. He plays Slide OK but can't touch what Duane did in his short career. Conversely think Warren is underrated. He has a very soulful voice and has stage presence besides being a brilliant guitarist. These guys say they won't play together again but only time will tell....
Thundergod129 I've never heard Derek and Warren claim they won't play together again. ? Dickey will be playing with Derek and Susan very soon in their show. And everyone is entitled to their own opinion. It's a shame you're not more aware of Derek's talent. I'm a huge Duane fan and I'm also a huge Derek fan. I definitely know that you could never touch either one of those fine soul's talents, so opinions can be overrated as well.
c. k. sandi What I heard was that they wouldn't play together as The Allman Bros. In fact they recently did their last show. But we all know that money has coaxed many out of retirement. As far as Derek, well it really IS a matter of opinion. He was blessed to be born into such an iconic band but there will never be anything as awesome as Dickey and Skydog playing those double leads. And opinions can't be over or underrated but again that also is a matter of opinion I guess....
And the band played on, Derek Trucks is a brilliant guitarist. Everybody loves an original line up, but shit happens. Give Derek the credit he deserves.
Remember guys, you aren't just here because of Top Gear or Guitar Hero. You're here because of them AND the fact that the Allman Brothers rock so much that you had to look them up. Screw the promoters and give the band themselves some credit! You owe them for illegally downloading their songs like I'm about to do...
great version of one of my favorite songs. I loved the original band, how Duane and Dickie could jam and jam and then come together out of the blue with those sweet harmony lines. This is one of my happiest songs, just makes me smile, even without lyrics, reminds me of falling in love with a beautiful young woman and sweet that is.
..long may they run with this great music they have been entrusted to inherit.. so few musicians could ever think about filling the shoes of the ABB legacy... but here it is in this video being carried on to another generation. yes. thanks much 8baseballgeek
All the dissing of Derek and Warren is so tiresome. Name one other band where they've done such an amazing job of bringing in the best players they could find when there was a hole. (Wilco with Nels Cline and WSP with Jimmy Herring are great adds). Oteil, Lamar, Jack, Warren, Derek etc are fantastic musicians and they've made for some of the best moments of my life. Great vid.
+Bufus Blane I doubt that they are trying hard at all to copy Duane's and Dickie's leads. I once read an interview with Derek where he talked about the need to show respect for the original, but any good guitarist (including Duane and Dickie) improvises. That's why most of us like live and original music. TH-cam proves all the time that plenty of guitarists can mimic tone and technique. In fact, live improvisation (including Mountain Jam) is what made At Fillmore East and the Allman Brothers a hit. I'm surprised you have so little tolerance for it, but like to imagine that Duane would have loved what these guys brought to the band (quote from his daughter Galadrielle: "That was his vision for the Allman Brothers ... that he would make a band with equally talented musicians as strong as he was that could all spread out together.") Now that they're gone, and ABB has played it's final show, I guess you can rest easy.
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but I do not like Metallica because they are a heavy metal band. I have been listening and exploring the music of The Allman Brothers Band for about 6 months now. And, in my opinion, The Allman Brothers is a true legendary band.
I don't always listen to the Allman Bros. But when I so do my neighbors.
lol
And so they should......ABB rocks......Warren is doing his best, but Derek has him beat.
That much is absolutely certain...... ABB and Gov't Mule.....
:)

Those were the best days of the Allman Brothers , hungry to play well & that they did. All the line ups were awesome but never will they surpass the days of old with Duane & Dickey, Berry, Jaimoe Gregg & Butch firing on all cylinders.
Stymie S ...YES YES YES...
Were you at Watkins Glen in ‘73?
@@andrewhoran7088 Free Boston Common, August 1971....Full Band. Friend dragged me to it, I didn't have a clue who they were. Man, did I get an education that day!
This has been my favorite song for over 40 years.
I’ve heard many interpretations, but they all maintain that sweet, playful, spiritual groove created by Dickey Betts, as his infant daughter, Jessica, played at his feet.
❤❤❤
LOVE It 😎💞 brings me back to Hi School ...full circle..am 64!!!! Still rockin' n rollin'💋🎸🎶
Wow... First time I've heard the "new" lineup.. been listening to them since the "Gregg and Duane" and "Duane and Gregg" albums... good to hear the tradition was still carried on. This is a good jammed out version. Rest in Peace, Brother Gregg.
love the Allman's, always have, always will
me too!!
OMG this song brings back so many memories as a teen growing up, it reminds me of Saturday afternoon on a Summers day, cruising the seaside roads where i used to live, in an open wheeled roadster, lovin it!!!
Our love of Jessica continues to resonate throughout the known universe... and unknown 🙂
I love classics like this because the melody stands by itself. No vocals required.
that was pretty much spotless! derek and warren just doing their class act of improvising and being the best musicians in the planet earth. The rest just playing their heart outs too. This was good. Thanks for the upload. What a treat!
WOW. Epic version! Warren is totally in his element with the Allmans!! No words.
Derek and Warren are two of the best guitarists alive ... But. .. Dickey is the vital ingredient that the ABB could never replicate. This is why they continued playing Jessica and Elizabeth Reed every night, despite his absence
Wonderful Talent!!! Thanks guys, really brings back what we've been missing for a long while!!!!
Also saw this live. A special night. Thanks for posting.
This is every bit as good as the original and these boys been playing this along time so just enjoy it as it is done. Thank god they are carrying it on.
This is such an Allmanific version of Jessica. Anyone who disagrees has no instinct for true talent . Guaranteed Dickey has seen this & loves it
Just a beautiful piece of music. Thanks Dickie for writing this piece✌️🥰 You da man!
they still love playing this song, don't they? the joy of jessica is alive..... hard to believe the first time i heard this song it was '73 or '74.... on an 8 track. didn't even know who the allman brothers were.... i just knew i loved this song.... rip, mr allman.
Me too! I had an 8 track tape I had picked up somewhere and played it on my Sanyo player in my car. I fell in love with this song right off the bat!!!
Watching Oteil Burbridge play the Bass always brings a smile to my face, he has such a good time Pickin it’s a sure fire cure for what ails you!🤘🏼
I want the original and this version played at my last party, will never get tired of this instrumental ,its all good ,keyboard, percussion , the guitar is fantastic on both, no lyrics to listen to, I love it , makes me tap my feet & smile every time I hear it..
Glad my older half-sister has a song named after her, and this is such a great rockin' remix of a rendition of the Allman Brothers' original!
Thanks for the great music! So unfortunate that the was camera focused on everyone EXCEPT the pianist during the piano solo! Unbelievable.
Una versión de Jessica espectacular! Son los mejores, los hermanos Allman!!
RIP Butch, thanks for the music
Memory takes me back to Summer Jam 1973. Thanks for posting!
I loved the BROTHERS AND SISTERS version ,lot of good times with a good brother, little herb and sweet Jessica!😊
That was an ABSOLUTE PLEASURE to listen to! I actually jumped out of my chair to give a standing ovation in my own living room. Too bad it was only 13 minutes. ;-) I guess people need a break once and a while. Thanks again for the post.
+jrc99us I sooo much agree with you, we all need a break from it all!! Main reason I really like good instrumentals.
Cool. I do that too.
All Right.
jrc99us ha ha!
So blessed to see these two legends together. Thank you TH-cam for the video. So much respect for my heroes.
ME TOO
I haven't seen them, but I have seen dave matthews band live a good handful of times, and i know what you're saying. Every concert is different and new in its own way. I'm getting chills just thinking about it.
The Dead too! I saw the ABB 3 times back in the day, but not since ‘73. I still love them! These guys sound great, Duane would be pleased!
Saw them live twice in early '70s and I agree w/ you; they would go off and do their improvisations and that was truly impressing and amazing. They really touched your soul.
Love the beautiful interplay between Derek and Warren!!!!!
Can we have a moment of appreciation for how hard the drummer is going tho
Too bad Dickie Betts isn't on this version
Love the music!
shizzlenoits
Gregg isn't the only original member. Butch and Jaimoe are originals.
Derek is part of the family, nephew to Butch Trucks.
They're not just glorifying the past. These are *amazing musicians* giving us fans the gift of their music.
Dickey calls it an Allman Tribute Band....
Derek Trucks rocks!
Merci de me rajeunir de 50 ans 😊
And the band played on, Derek Trucks is a brilliant guitarist. Everybody loves an original line up, but shit happens. Give Derek the credit he deserves.
I’ve been listening to Derek more and more over the last few months. What a master of the slide, and what a remarkable tone he gets. Superb.
As they say The music never stopped
extraordinary SG guy!
Look Ma No Pick
Great fun watching these guys play off each other, awesome!
bab rock just listen shut da fukup and listen just listen after all it is music.
Whatever y'all say.Derek Trucks is one fine guitar player! Let it go, OK?
+Bufus Blane each great giutarrist, stand on the shoulders of another great giutarist
+Poul Mogensen Well said
Was I talking to you?
One of the greatest of our generation for sure. 👍🏼
INDEED !!!
amen Brother. ..ive been to several of thier concerts since the late 70s and they are loud and flipping FUN!.
This is when music was music. wish I could go back. ....
I listen to Fillmore East in my car's CD all the time
Goodgod this band is great.... been hearing them for decades.
Fantastic, point counterpoint dual lead guitar clinic! Duane would be proud, Mondo talent these guys!
Damn Right!
Warren & Derek, you boyz have done the impossible.
i love this song
Those 2 guys, just wow
Fantastic the Legendary "Allman Brothers Band"
Perfect!
Not too shabby
purdy good sound for somebody filming it with their phone :)
great version of one of my favorite songs. I loved the original band, how Duane and Dickie could jam and jam and then come together out of the blue with those sweet harmony lines. This is one of my happiest songs, just makes me smile, even without lyrics, reminds me of falling in love with a beautiful young woman and sweet that is.
love the Allman Brothers
..long may they run with this great music they have been entrusted to inherit.. so few musicians could ever think about filling the shoes of the ABB legacy... but here it is in this video being carried on to another generation. yes. thanks much 8baseballgeek
OK, I will watch that video.
I agree with it being tiresome, these guys are excellent. But I can name one band where they've done such an amazing job to fill the hole: Metallica.
Right On, Brother.
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but I do not like Metallica because they are a heavy metal band. I have been listening and exploring the music of The Allman Brothers Band for about 6 months now. And, in my opinion, The Allman Brothers is a true legendary band.
