Fortunate enough to see Duane and Dickey together early Sept. ‘71…backstage many times with the Brothers… nobody could do this song the way the original band could… but…Derek&Dickey came close…Derek&Warren even closer.. would loved to have seen Derek/Warren and Jack Pearson added as a third guitar! This is a wonderful rendition of my favorite Allman Brothers song of all. The solos from the studio version are so ingrained in me I can play them note for note, really more melody than improvisation. I never like playing slide, but I learned long ago to use thumb and fingers instead of pick to get Duane-like nuances on this song. Trucks' technique is perfect for this, then he throws in the slide too. He captures enough pieces of the original solos to make it familiar, but he adds much more. So true to the spirit of the band.

Great playing, yes. Having seen Derek several times, I'm just glad he came along and extended what Duane had started. This is as good as any human being can copy and interpret an all time classic solo. But Duane Allman's playing was more raw, more pure. Like Buddy Baker trying to control a winged Daytona at 200+, you never really knew where he was going, only that he was blistering it.
    Please keep playing Mr. DT.

I agree, while Derek has great slide technique and can play solid solos, (mostly pentatonic) Duane's playing was a fiery meteor burning across the sky. Duane took wild chances and played many different scales and modes. They are VERY different slide players.
