    Two points for your consideration:
    1. Yes I tried all sorts of tricks to get the AV out to work, including plugging it in when the device was off, changing NTSC/PAL, etc. Nothing worked.

Is it only two RCA cables? In my experience, some TVs will misbehave if you're only using mono sound. Unless there are 3 cables plugged in they simply won't detect a signal.

From my POV one of the most attractive features is the 18650 and I've been mind boggled that none of the retro consoles have gone this route because that is both cheap to implement, and a very user-friendly feature. No worries about battery life. Carry a spare or three. Charge one while you're playing. Never have to put the device down to charge, never have to use a cable while you play. Many people have 18650 chargers already for vape, flashlight, bike lights, and I wish there was legislation forcing manufacturers to use 18650 instead of proprietary batteries except where the device needs to be thinner.

I guess there's just a fascination we have with devices really pushing the lower limit of cheap. But when almost everything is a little wrong and half of it is really wrong, I can't find the same sort of enthusiasm some people have. I do think if they had a curated selection of games that actually worked on the device it'd at least fill that niche of being something you could buy for a kid.

There's a working custom firmware that works on this device as of now, with other widely used custom firmwares for these style of devices being worked on. Currently the custom firmware runs everything much better and with none of the same glaring issues. If you're just going to use it out the box then I agree with you. But with minimal effort you can make it better.
Give it six months for the firmware to get to 1.0 and the others to support it and I'd say this will be more than worth it.

In the way that this looks and feels like a portable SNES within that system's controller design, imagine a Genesis or NES or PS1 controller with a screen in the middle. With performance, aspect ratio, and controls finely tuned to fit just those systems, I feel like THAT would make for a cool collectible gift to give family and friends. These "aliexpress consoles" brings back memories! Before aliexpress was a thing, you can occasionally see them in larger neighborhood market markets among awful LCD handhelds. They were the usually the cream of the whole toy collection (a couple hundred yuan vs 40 yuan for a bootleg transformer or an LCD handheld) I'd stand there staring at it every time I go for grocery with my mom. With no hope of ever getting a PSP (even if I can save up a few thousand somehow, my mom would never allow it), I'd drool in my sleep over them.

I feel like for the small amount more, that clamshell from powkiddy, the model name escapes me, but I think it's v90, offers so much more for the dollar.

Do not understand how the level of issues with SNES here are "unplyable"
But the same level of issues on N64/Saturn on an RP3+ are "acceptable."

I just got this for $15, and you can favorite games now. It also plays Snes games. I haven't done updates. I guess they fixed it.

Russ, this device is almost exactly your logo 😂
Also - as for the AV out on that - try switching the yellow/red cables on the Video/audio in for the TV. I have some devices where the rings on the 3.5 mm plug are reversed, so the video is actually the red plug!

I know the hype on this is calming down a little, but when custom firmware does drop, would you be willing to do a reprise on this, discussing what the CFW fixes, what it doesn't, etc.
Also, this device offers secondary wireless controllers, which seems both awesome and rather silly, given the screen size, but since you got so excited about the Miyoo's multiplayer, what's your take on this? Can you pair and play multiple controllers to more expensive devices, either by USB hub or bluetooth? I can see some marginal but compelling use cases, particularly with nicer/larger consoles.

Just echoing other comments, but I'd love to see more of these super cheap handhelds!
They'd be a great jumping in point for new buyers, gifts for others, or those (like me) who love seeing the most competent cheap choices.

I received one of those about two weeks ago for less than $8, with the ROM card. The Miyoo Mini + that I also received about the same time is better (especially with Onion), but I figured worst case, the ROMs are worth the ~$8. Fortunately, this device is popular enough as well, that a small customization community has developed. Is it good? Eh, but as someone whose first handheld was an Atari Lynx, I find it an amazing value.

Got my [ Black edition ] Today!! Not sure if its updated as per datafrogs youtube channel but i found theres a keymapping option and the fave folder in the menu now..... i got mine for £11 from Aliexpress and also thought its worth it for the roms
And the most surpising thing is mine anyway looks and feels much better than i thought from the videos...... mine is completely black, i havent played it yet as ive literally just got it..... its really really solid and sturdy feeling theres abit of weight to it too and i tried twisting it and it wont even creak!!! I really like it in the hand and the screen is bright..... i havent played it yet as ive just literally scrolled through the menus and ive taken photos of it just in case i need to return it etc.....
But the box mine came in is definitely better than the mashed up box that is in this video
For £11 now updated with Keymapping and a favourites folder shipped to me! If they get CFW that tweaks and optimises this little badboy! this will be my device to use and abuse in bed and in the toilet and i wont mind if i lose it!!!!!!
LOL i too have a Miyoo Mini + on the way as i ordered this along with it seeing as it was £11 and all the videos advertise it as $30
Seen this thing on Aliexpress for £15 that comes with 2 additional joypads!

About those sanded down chips, if you put a dab of isopropyl alcohol (ipa) on them you can sometimes make out the writing. try different angles. also try macrolens on your phone. and if you are desperate microscope :-) all with a ton of light.

This is definitely a part of the market I would be interested in. Honestly all I want is a NES/SNES/gb/gbc/gba device that can do multiplayer including link cable so I can give one to my daughter and keep one for myself and play 2 player games with her (preferably including pokemon).

Spend more than 5 minutes researching handhelds and you'll find exactly what you need for between $50-100 from better brands that don't just pump out garbage e-waste like this.
