  • On this episode of ARN, we continue our journey through JCP 1987, as Arn and Paul revisit September '87! Topics include working with Tully against the Rock ‘N’ Roll Express, Barry Windham, Lex Luger, and Arn vs. Dusty and Animal in a Double Bull Rope match, Arn and Tully winning NWA Tag Team Championship, and much more!
Nobody had a career like Arn Anderson. For more than three decades he has been the epitome of “old school.” Hear him as you’ve never heard him before every Tuesday at 6am Eastern as you gives you a peak behind the curtain for the first time ever. Each week Conrad Thompson will examine Arn’s days in the territories, becoming an Anderson, creating the Four Horsemen in the NWA, becoming a Hall of Famer, and being a producer behind the scenes for years for WWE proving “The Enforcer” has a story unlike anyone else.

Garvin was only supposed to be a "placeholder champion" and agreed to do the job. Most wrestlers didn't want to do the job, but Garvin agreed. Kind of similar to Iron Shiek being WWF champ, they had him do it, take the belt from Backlund just to lose it to Hogan (couldn't have 2 babyfaces go for the belt back then). Garvin/Flairs situation was a little different (cutting and pasting this):
The feud with Flair took a new twist on September 25, 1987, when Garvin was able to defeat Flair for the title.[9] With the NWA holding the 1987 Starrcade the same day WWF was holding its first Survivor Series, Crockett chose to face the strong WWF competition by having Flair win the title. Flair therefore had to lose the title first and whoever beat him would only be a placeholder champion. Most wrestlers declined the offer, but Garvin, assuming that at 42 it may be his last chance to hold the major NWA title, accepted to fill the role. Indeed, Garvin held the title for two months before losing it back to Flair at Starrcade.

I liked Ron Garvin. His matches were more technical than just jumping all over the ring. He could have used some better mic skill though. Back in the 80’s promos were becoming more important. The guys who were a natural at it got big. Ric Flair, Hulk Hogan, etc. but some guys never really got the promos right. Garvin was one of them.

He had the girls all over him, and played the total babyface. He was legit over with the fans. Dropping the NWA title to him would have made perfect sense to the council. Garvin was always well received by the other wrestlers, but even though he was a great mechanic style wrestler, he wasnt particularly fun to watch, not terribly exciting. Like Lance Storm personality, but (in my opinion) half of Lance's talent. Garvin was good. He wasnt great. He would have been a solid choice for champ as well, just neither of those two are guys who you'd want to KEEP it on. Race, Flair, Dusty those guys could have that belt for YEARS, because they were always popular, always showed up to wrestle, and reliable. Thats who gets the belt.
