Oh, and my son-in-law did the Tour Divide this past June riding 2660 miles on the eastern divide of the Rocky Mts and his SRAM X01 performed flawlessly.

Technically I cannot figure out any difference between the two systems when I am riding. I guess I would be perfectly happy with "only" a GX. Would definitely not change back. Love your channel Doddy - definitely my favourite! 😎👍🏻
I found the exact same thing after riding with the xx1 and gx. After I sold my xx1 equipped Enduro to purchase a Kenevo SL, I went with gx because it makes no realistic difference
Which Stumpy? I have the 2020 Carbon comp and have debated this upgrade, but its gonna take a whole retrofit since it ships with an SLX set up. Worth it?
Doddy, I’m not convinced. You’re going to have to send me the GX upgrade kit in the post and let me evaluate it for a couple of years. Also, a lot for my CX bike so I can test on gravel. 😂 But for real, I’ve been planning on swapping the Deore XT setup on my Scottt Spark for AXS, and I’m probably going to use it on my Trek Crockett CX bike until it gets replaced by a Checkpoint eTap in august, and then the GX AXS will slide over to the Spark. You actually 100% addressed my remaining concerns in this video! Thanks!
I managed to get the the XX1 for my Scott Scale from lordgun (Italian bike shop) for the same price as GX in the the UK. Couldn’t be happier with the system. Same as yourself, I’m running a Shimano chain, cassette and chainring with AXS XX1 rear mech. Shifts great as long as you get the b tension spot on and micro adjust for the middle gears. LoveMTB has a great video on the setup 👍

This video came out the day I did my very first ride on my AXS derailleur. The day was wet with intermittent rain, slippery trails and lots of mud and puddles. Busted out 30km and not once did I worry about it skipping gears or not engaging properly and every gear was just there for me to keep grinding forward. I left it overnight with mud caked on it and before cleaning gave it a few shifts and BAM next gear without fail. I've had issues with cables binding in the outer housing on both derailleur and dropper post but now with both replaced its one less thing to worry about. They are definitely quality of life upgrades but the quality is mint 👌
Thanks for the video, I've been considering purchasing the GX AXS upgrade kit. Seeing how well it has held up to the use/abuse of hard trail use really puts another check mark in the pros column for me. I've never really been too worried about the wireless technology, pretty much the only part that ever concerned me was if it used an encrypted signal and that is a moot point since it does. On side note.. As a aviation mechanic in the military, I've been around electrically controlled fly by wire systems for decades. So the idea of a complete wireless braking system keeps popping into mind. On aircraft like the F-16 and others there is only a electrical signal from the brake pedals in the cockpit to the brake control valve(s) on or near the landing gear. With the miniaturization of electronics and the very low pressures(aircraft hydraulic systems operate around 3000-5000 psi) bike brakes use the valves and reservoir could be located on the caliper body itself. The big hurdle for it would be in programming in the modulation so that as you pressed more firmly the braking force would increase as well.. Like I said, a very interesting idea....If they ever want a test rider for it. I'm game!
Running the X01 on my Shimano XT drivetrain absolutely hassle free, perfect shifting which is what I never had with the Shimano XT and with it's sticky clutches
I had so much frustration during a stage race with adjusting my gears that I made a big mind shift to wanting to eliminate variables. Extra admin due to a battery with the GX AXS I put on, but I am blown away!

This video couldn't have come at a better time. I have the SRAM AXS on my new Stumpjumper and ride in an area with lots of rocks. Where I use to go flying through I find myself hitting the brakes with the thought of "but my derailleur..." in the back of my mind. Not that I'm keen on bashing it on rocks now but I certainly do feel much more comfortable going back to my standard routine.

Thank you from the US. Cheers mate 🍺
it boggles my mind every time i get to test ride a wireless shifting bike. The shifting really is on point, it will never "miss shift" and the accuracy from the moment it shifts is spot on! i need this on my own bike!
Been Running GX axs for a couple of weeks now,it replaced Shimano xt 11speed set up, it works brilliantly, easy to set up,pairs brilliantly with my Garmin 830 and so far hasn't missed a beat, love the tidy cockpit it gives me too
It’s the best upgrade i have made on my bike. I recently changed my bike and a key requirement was SRAM eagle and a 30.9 seat tube so I could transfer my AXS shifter and seat post
The first thing I did on my E-MTB, was get rid of the mechanical shifting and seat post..I have the GX and the reverb system and I am a very happy camper with the system. Im waiting for the wireless. brakes!!..Thanx for the video and your time
I love the idea of electronic shifting. I’m just not a good enough of a rider to constitute the cost. If I thought it would shave a couple minutes off my lap time, or make it easier to climb a steep hill, I’d buy it right now. As good as this thing is, it’s still not gonna do much to make me 15 years younger, or 20 lbs lighter.
wireless is super convenient when traveling by plane. Remove the derailleur and dropper for more room in a travel bag and simply Install them at the destination. Worked incredibly well for my buddy on our last trip. I wish they had a smaller cassette, like 10 to 46 12 speed, and shorter cage option. I don't need 50 or more teeth, especially for my local trails.
Have GX AZS on both MTB and will never turn back. One thing you missed is that it can shift under load uphill which is great when you are not familiar with the terrain and come around a turn facing a big uphill 😃
You forgot to mention the loads of play that starts developing in the pivots of the GX mech. Had to send mine back since it was no longer shifting as it should. Still love the product and would not go back.
After a few months of having an XC race bike with XO1 AXS, I just forget that it's there in a good way. Going back to a mechanical groupset, the inconsistency is definitely noticeable. However most of the inconsistency is from the rider. With AXS, no matter how hard you are shifting and no matter how many gears you are trying to change, the shifting always feels effortless. Another huge benefit to racers is the ability to hold down the shifter to shift down multiple gears. This means a much smaller hand position change is required, which is extremely beneficial when trying to shift down at the top of a rocky downhill, or trying to shift up when standing up and sprinting.
Do you know someone with XX1? I want to build with XX1 but hear XO1 is for enduro so was wondering difference as apparently XO1 is more durable for enduro but still want to know XX1 is good enough
I actually pulled the trigger on buying AXS one night a few months ago, I just couldn't resist but when it arrived I never actually installed it and returned it because of I was so terrified of breaking it and or damaging it on my bike. I couldn't get over the fear at that sort of money! Maybe if you made this video before I would have it on one of my bikes now.
love the system but never got on with the shifter, so I loved it when the new T type came along and is interchangeable so I now use their pod to shift, its so much better imho
OK I have been off my bike for some years (before Long Covid - some of us got post viral chronic fatigue) I still own a K2 4500 with Smart Shocks, a 9v battery operated front & rear active suspension unit that used vector forks (similar to a Cannodale lefty) that must be out of patent by now. It was amazingly effective, I just wish that it was still available today in the aftermarket. So the idea of wireless shifters looks like something I might try when I get back to riding!
I've had GX AXS for a year so far. Ridden in all conditions from dusty Morzine in summer to full depths of winter in the South of England. Hasn't missed a beat so far and I'm very impressed. Shifting isn't quite as crisp as Shimano due to lack of Hyperglide style technology but it's still very good.
@@1911Zoey yeah I think a good way I've heard it described is that "you definitely know you've changed gear." It does crunch a touch but it doesn't miss shifts like SRAMs cable stuff
So this is the only was SRAM could even get a derailleur to shift properly, I'm good with Shimano until the get into a few more versions, unless I get a very good deal.
What a game changer. Trek might want to make its own gps / computer mappings like Garmin. Now I only need my phone and trek app as my full brain of my road trip. 😂
It's just improving the tire not necessarily doing anything revolutionary. If we really wanted to improve the drivetrain for MTB's then manufactures need to push hard for an internal drive system- like the Rohloff. Or the other type with the gearbox situated down near the cranks. They could be made very lite using a carbon fiber body and aluminum or titanium gears.
I remember when mountain biking used to be about having fun, now it seems to getting more and more about flexing, look how much my bike cost etc. Good luck riding home if the electronics pack up.
I remember when mountain biking was purely all about your own effort. Now "mountain bikers" are bragging about doing a 20 mile enduro session...... on their ebike, with everything electronic.
Wireless will help those who have hardtails and are upgrading , whereas your old cables are on the seat stay and new drivetrains are designed to run on the chainstay .
I can appreciate all the points Doddy makes with regard to 'real world' reliability (although I met a guy on Porcupine Rim who's electric mech had crapped out and it was stuck in the highest gear - long ride home with that!), but I still really can't see the benefit... they weigh more, cost more to buy and replace (if you did ever damage one), and I'd be interested to see how much 'crisper' the shifting is compared to a cable operated XT or XTR rear mech? - maybe something for the Tech show to do as a comparison in future?
Never had a flawless mechanical one yet. They work for a certain amount of time then your adjusting changing cables & outer cables. I didn't get into riding to be fiddling about with cables.
True, correctly set up... and Good cables come pre-stretched. So less faff as replace cable annually v charging batteries, and replacing expensive batteries after 300 -600 charge cycles. Still...if u can afford it, why not... its like the argument fir buying xtr v xt... both perform as well to avg rider
I love Di2 on the road and I can definitely see why this could be good offroad. The look of the bike with no cables is really nice. The wireless dropper is the one that I really want though. Droppers seem to be so finicky with regards to cable routing or hose bleeding that the wireless just makes sense. I might wait until the price comes down a bit though.
I currently put Shimano SLX 1X12 on my current bike, purely because I can't afford electronic at the moment. But I must say, I'm hooked onto Shimano now. Big hits from jumps and even techy terrain, it works flawlessly. I guess, at the end of the day, it is your personal preference.
I think they are great and well over due, im just waiting now for the voice activated version to totally get rid of cables, switches, leavers & buttons & before you say it no its not impossible, remember 3/4 of it is already done for you, all it needs now is a mic & a reciever with the reciever already there, personally i think they feel slightly more robuster, probably because of the technology in them so they have to be a bit more solid, remember these gadgets have been in R&D & tested rigorously for years way before the prototypes come into production,
I have been running an AXS X01 rear since early 2020... I've beaten the HELL out of it riding through the rocky mountains of ColoRADo, Utah and Wyoming... the only problem I've had is bending the hanger on my bike! One downfall of this system, there is no "reset defaults" that I could find. Back to my bent hanger, I "tuned" the mech to shift correctly before I realized the hanger was bent. Once I replaced the hanger, I could not "reset" all those .25mil micro-adjustments back to "defaults"...
I'm all for them as long as the don't rely on using apps, and if you want to see why just look at the latest stories of the Nissan Leaf where the app is no longer supported and features like being able to start up the heater and get the battery warm in a morning before you get in are no longer supported. Or HP printers where you now are being forced into a subscription service so you can print. Built in obsolescence and you get to spend another grand on the latest shifter.
In about two seasons of riding I have ripped one off a bike and had it happen to someone I was riding with as well. I have needed to bend back cages multiple times as well. There's a lot of sticks and rocks around me. At that price I just can't justify it unless it comes with at least a 5 year warranty.
I was wondering if you have researched price decline since they were released to the public. Also what you are saving in weight since you no longer have the cables. Thanks for the great content.
You're not saving weight, as you're getting a battery and a motor, what you're getting is flawless shifting performance and ease of setup. Price wise they have definitely dropped at least in Europe, used to be 800€ for X01 AXS Upgrade kit and now it's around 600€ however you will have to some shopping around to find that price.
hi got sram force axs on my gravel bike and just had eagle axs fitted to MTB winner all day long. 😀 its the snobbery that makes me laugh. buy it, you will love it.
Am I ready to buy? Not yet. Your introduction has definitely got me thinking. I love TEC. I ride an Luna X2 modified with a Zeb fork 170/180 29r cheers from Northern California
Let's see how many years Sram gives the AXS line soft- and hardware support. As a (small) shop owner I see (and have seen) many brands giving up on products after a few years by not making spare parts or software-update available and say people should just buy new. I believe in the product, it's rigid and quite fool proof, and as long the hangar is straight as an arrow, easy to set up. I really hope I don't have to tell customers in a few years that these expensive parts should be binned because parts or software are not available anymore. Repair, not replace. P.S. to Sram: Please list the outer cage as a replacement part and make them available for repair
The only thing I’m afraid of is the price 🧐

Doddy is awesome. And the derailleur hanger is likely to break before the derailleur does. So better to just carry a spare derailleur hanger.
Best thing I love about this content is the Yeti blue kitchen tiles👌🤘😜💥👍
WoW thanks what a great durability test for a mech. I could not afford one but it sure is an interesting concept.
love the system but never got on with the shifter, so I loved it when the new T type came along and is interchangeable so I now use their pod to shift, its so much better imho
I use AXS on my bikepacking rig which is also my trail bike. never had a single issue
Great breakdown of the tech. Thanks Doddy!
amazin piece of kit! a actual pleasure in changin gears for the sale of it! zip zip!
this is good advertisement. I would just be worried of bending it which would worsen shifting without breaking it.
Does it feel a bit crunchy with the GX while shifting? I havent owned any SRAM drivetrain parts yet.
I’ve got GX AXS and it’s night and day difference compared to cable. I never thought shifting could be so much better.
Very Nice 15 minute Commercial by SRAM here. I hope SRAM sends you all the commission checks you deserve for helping them sell so many AXS kits !
That’s why I love my X01 AXS never had an issue
What a game changer. Trek might want to make its own gps / computer mappings like Garmin. Now I only need my phone and trek app as my full brain of my road trip. 😂
Loving my XX1 axs
I love my GX AXS! Awesome piece of kit!
I’ve got the GX AXS and apart from once where I forgot the battery (what a muppet !) it’s been a brilliant bit of kit.
It's not that I'm "afraid" of them. I simply... don't want them. For one thing, it's going to lead to more e-waste.
Everyone is mostly afraid of the price mate. The tech alone is impressive.
Looking forward to see the wireless brakes (possibly in very near future) and then cockpit will be totally clean 👌
Or at least brakes-by-wire system implementation...as an alternative...
Would never trust wireless brakes
IP69k! That’s 100 bar 1450 PSI spray wash at a distance of 6 inches, 15 cm. Impressive.
GX AXS would be my go to for building a bike
- maybe something for the Tech show to do as a comparison in future?
forgot to address the price when mechanical also works flawlessly ;-)
Never had a flawless mechanical one yet. They work for a certain amount of time then your adjusting changing cables & outer cables. I didn't get into riding to be fiddling about with cables.
True, correctly set up... and Good cables come pre-stretched. So less faff as replace cable annually v charging batteries, and replacing expensive batteries after 300 -600 charge cycles.
Still...if u can afford it, why not... its like the argument fir buying xtr v xt... both perform as well to avg rider
Best rear derailleur I have ever owned
I love Di2 on the road and I can definitely see why this could be good offroad. The look of the bike with no cables is really nice.
The wireless dropper is the one that I really want though. Droppers seem to be so finicky with regards to cable routing or hose bleeding that the wireless just makes sense. I might wait until the price comes down a bit though.
You live only once. What are you waiting for? Get it!
Doddy, I am 100% sure I’m listening to a Airsoft podcast hosted by you! You have a unmistakable voice. Tell me I’m wrong!? The chairsofter show 😀
I think they are great and well over due,
im just waiting now for the voice activated version to totally get rid of cables, switches, leavers & buttons & before you say it no its not impossible, remember 3/4 of it is already done for you, all it needs now is a mic & a reciever with the reciever already there,
personally i think they feel slightly more robuster, probably because of the technology in them so they have to be a bit more solid, remember these gadgets have been in R&D & tested rigorously for years way before the prototypes come into production,
Have X01 sitting on the shelf for my Nordest Bardino build.
The price really isn't that nuts. I am a big fan boy though. Can't wait to get this on the hardtail
I will be putting sram go eagle on my new bike build in the next couple of months
In about two seasons of riding I have ripped one off a bike and had it happen to someone I was riding with as well. I have needed to bend back cages multiple times as well.
There's a lot of sticks and rocks around me. At that price I just can't justify it unless it comes with at least a 5 year warranty.
4:53 😂😂😂
"Magical Moving"
Smacked mine on a rock & it got wrapped around my cassette. Thought it was going to be knackered but it's absolutly fine! Too expensive. but fine!
The video frame at 0:39 is PTSD worthy.
Great vid. I am only at the 5:04 mark
I have the X01. Awesome stuff! If ya got the dosh go for it!
hi got sram force axs on my gravel bike and just had eagle axs fitted to MTB winner all day long.
