Loving this album so far. Keep the comments and suggestions coming. More Nightwish and more coming this week! Part 2 Here: th-cam.com/video/mtH1K9vd7DU/w-d-xo.html
You might as well give in and make your channel a Rush only reaction channel. Theres plenty of amazing songs. Ive commented before about the song Chemistry. Gotta check that one out..countdown is also a good one.
When this album came out New World Man got the majority of radio airtime. To me it was my least favorite song. Absolutely checkout the rest of Subdivisions.
I am going to keep pushing for Anthem - a kick ass Rocking tune from the 2nd album. Do you thin Geddy could have played Bass for Speed or Death Metal Band ?
That solo is so great. It goes in so many unexpected places. And all those ska chords. This is "we can be better Police than the Police" Rush at its peak.
It reminds me of George Harrison's crazy bassline in the Beatles song "Old Brown Shoe". He just played a bass like he would an electric guitar and boom: Absolute fire
@@scottshields113 and @KBH27, me too! Mine was a cassette tape. My sister got it as part of a 12-for-a-penny deal, kind of randomly, didn't like it, and gave it to me. And thus began a lifelong obsession for me.
@Scott Shields, I had some friends around this time who weren’t that keen on Rush but there was one album that grabbed them. But it would be a different one. I recall someone being hooked on Signals, another on Grace Under Pressure... Personally I considered Signals to be a bit below par, despite the fact it has some of my favourite Rush songs on it! I think this is because it followed the mighty Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures.
@@kevinmcfarlane2752 It's the mix of Signals that got killed, it has a dull feel. If you listen to Moving Pictures which is so crisp, the drums alone are night and day in the mix sound. Signals got too muddied in the mix for me. But tinkering with a good equalizer does help. They definitely took a plunge off a cliff in a new direction, but I love the songwriting, of the synth period it's a lower ranking album for me. But for nostalgia being my intro it's still special
FINALLY !!! Someone reacts to one of my fav RUSH songs of all time. You don't know how many channels I beg to review this song. NONE of them do. It's such a hidden RUSH gem.
Geddy’s playing in the 80’s was at its peak in my opinion. It was more reserved and impactful while displaying the same level of virtuosity as the older stuff.
Another great example of how Rush could play any style of music and sound so tight and energetic at the same time. Love the bass lives throughout and Neil’s groovy drum fills. At first listen you feel Alex was left out a little but then he brings a very unique and killer guitar solo. You’re not going to find three better musicians collectively in a single band.
Another great reaction! RUSH has always been a musicians band because you guys "get it". You said you are going to check out more earlier stuff, but I would love to see you do something from Clockwork Angels. It was their last album, but one of their best! (IMO) 🎶🎸🥁🎸🎶🔥🙂
Love this song. I'm a drummer and this was always one of the most fun Rush songs to play from the opening riff, ska feel time, cool fills and little cowbell flourishes. RIP Neil Peart, u were an inspiration and will never be forgotten. But this is also one my favorite guitar solos from Alex, just love the sound of his chorus and delay, the construction and the build up. And of course the bass lines from Geddy are insane. Just a damn cool song. Miss these guys
So I had just stumbled upon your youtube channel, and totally love your reviews andreally like these on Rush. one of my all time favorite bands. iam an older guy. and have been a fan of them for years. So anyway I saw this Signals Tour Live back in the day.and it has been one of my top concerts Ive seen, and trust me ive seen a ron of concerts. the live show was epic !!!!!!!! not sure if you seen it or not but when Neil does his drum solo he has two sets of drums and the litterly spin around him , he will play one set, then the other set spins around him into position and he continues playing on that set.Great reviews you do such a great job. Also you need t review the Album by RUSH Fly By Night !!! epic Album !!! keep up the great work.
One of the best songs I've heard from Rush, and Geddy's bassline is just straight up fire! Although this song was what broke the camel's back for the band's long time producer Terry Brown, as he initially refused to have this song onto the album. This would be his last album he produced with Rush. I'm not sure if you listened to The Police, but one of their songs Walking On The Moon was the inspiration to Digital Man, especially in the middle section on both songs. There are similarities, but not enough for Rush to "rip off" The Police. Although Rush is inspired by The Police with their sound. Great reaction for a great song!
When I hear this song, it makes me think a lot of The Police. Alex was playing a lot of New Wave riffs, they mixed in some reggae grooves, and just seem to have fun with it. That bass groove though.. What I haven't heard you comment on yet, OLS, are the transitions. Rush I think mastered those smooth transitions into bridges and alternate time signatures like true wizards. There are certainly underrated gems in Rush's discography, but I'm glad someone is finally posting up reaction videos of their deeper tracks!
i discovered the album in 1986, i was 20+, still loving it, and you digging it up in 2020, makes me feel real good, you like Rush and Nightwich, your heart is at the right place ! Good music is good music
His ability to use those puns in lyrics is second to nun. I still love "he knows changes aren't permanent but change is" from "Tom Sawyer" the most, but his lyrics are filled with such clever turns like that. "Territories" has "in different circles/indifferent circles" from the chorus, as well.
Hi Tim, have you reviewed anything off of Power Windows album? Alex really stands out in the songs Marathon and especially Emotion Detector, guitar leads.
Such a cool song. Watch Neil play live on a drum cam video. I did, it's one of his best songs for sure. Geds bass lines are some of the best I"ve ever heard. Alex has a very unique sound, really odd, but cool.
I've always enjoyed this one so much. I'm not sure you listened to the end all the way? Did you hear him speaking? :) Love the bass of course, but the other funny moment in this video is when you say something about restrained and a moment later Alex is off on one of the best solos of the whole album. Just cranks it... Love it all. :)
This is one of those tunes that you have to play three times every time you hear it. Once imagining you're the guitarist, once imagining your the drummer, and once imagining your the bassist.
Nice to see a musician appreciating three master craftsmen at their craft. I'm not a subscriber but I would be curious to see your reaction to a little known instrumental called Malignant Narcissism. It has to be the live version which is on their Snakes and Arrows DVD, not the CD. Live in Holland, arguably Rush at their best. The sound on that particular DVD is unbelievable. Cheers.
This album was the first album where they really incorporated a lot of keyboards into their rhythm section. Geddy wanted to go in that direction. Neil was very open about his fascination with Stewart Copeland and the police and the reggae and African rhythms. Alex was struggling trying to figure out how he still fit into the band! All things considered, a pretty cool noise overall.
You need to check out Hemispheres part 2 from the album Hemispheres, it’s another long haul but one of the best Rush ever put out. It’s up there with 2112
There is a theme to the album. Subdivisions is about youth in society being divided into groups with dreams of something more in life. Some "sell their dreams for small desires" and wind up in a 9 to 5 job. Analog Kid is about the "restless dreams". "A bright and aimless vision has him longing to depart" Chemistry is about interactions in society being like chemistry between people. Digital Man is about being current with information looking forward but dreaming of getting away. Losing It is about people who had the opportunity to live their dreams but lost their gifts and inspiration. Their dreams are of the past. The Weapon is about how some people use fear as a weapon. Countdown is about people coming together to make a dream a reality.
Not sure if you are gonna do every song on this album but be sure to do these three. Chemistry, Losing It..and Countdown. The entire album is awesome but those three kinda stand out for me.
Guitarist Alex Lifeson only used 2 Fender Stratocasters (customised) and a Fender Telecaster on "Signals". Yes, there is a loose theme throughout the album. Listen to the rest of the album.
“Signals” is also favourite of mine. In fact it’s in my top three Rush albums. My personal countdown goes: 3) Counterparts 2) Signals 1) Clockwork Angels.

But I stayed bought all the albums and went to All Rush concerts (mainly to hear the older songs). And I criticize Rush out of the love for the band. They should've brought Terry back.

80's Rush blows 70's Rush away and it's not even close. 70's was very proggy and experimental for sure, but also more inaccessible from a songwriting/vocal standpoint. All Rush is great, but the 80's is when it all came together. Starting with Permanent Waves.
I lot of Rush fans like song but I can't bring myself to enjoy all that much. It's the only song I don't really like on this album. Good bass, good guitar sound good drumming... but I just don't get or dig the vibe. It could have been some other band's best song but it doesn't feel like Rush to me. But I love Signals as it stands in my top 5 Rush records.

I would definitely recommend Rush ghost of a chance - snakes and arrows tour
Finally!!!!!! Someone does Digital Man. One of the most underrated RUSH pieces. I love everything about this song.
That solo is so great. It goes in so many unexpected places. And all those ska chords. This is "we can be better Police than the Police" Rush at its peak.
It's the best song of the album!!!
Amen!! One of my Favs!!
That drum intro is epic!
Yes !!
one of geddy lee's most insane basslines
Neil puts on a tour de force of a drum show on here too.
Alec solo epic as Well
It reminds me of George Harrison's crazy bassline in the Beatles song "Old Brown Shoe".
He just played a bass like he would an electric guitar and boom: Absolute fire
I have been waiting for someone to react to this. One of the coolest Rush songs. Thank you!
All three are basically playing LEADS, but they blend together so beautifully!
Marathon is another good one to check out
Love this whole album. Was my first Rush LP ever back in 1982. Could not stop playing it
I started with Signals in 82 too. And after listening, I wondered if their back catalogue at that time was any good? Lol

Geddy’s playing in the 80’s was at its peak in my opinion. It was more reserved and impactful while displaying the same level of virtuosity as the older stuff.
Not to mention that absolutely killer Wal tone
My favorite band! And my favorite album!
You can really hear how much The Police rubbed off on them, here, with that reggae/New Wave influence...
Joe Maurone Yeah, this song & New World Man really show it.
The Police, Ultravox, Talking Heads, etc
@@DGE123 Yep, Neil was huge fan of The Police and Geddy was a huge fan of Talking Heads, and you can totally hear it on this album and GUP.

Pure ear candy, loved this tune. All three are just killing it musically.
Can't go wrong with ANY RUSH! It's all incredible. 🇨🇦🇨🇦🎼🎶🎵
The transition back to the ensemble after the guitar solo is so perfect and seamless. A great track from a great album
Alex's best guitar solo. Change my mind. Okay, maybe Kid Gloves.
One of my faves as well
Definitely my favorite Alex solo
Dig Man, Freewill, and I might throw in Red Sector A because it's so different, no shredding,, just beautiful composition.
Kid Gloves is perfection
