Wonderfully informative! This is my favorite cardiologist on the internet! I last got CRP tested in 2020, mine was great at 0.3 units (low risk for systemic inflammation). This discussion reminded me to add the high-sensitivity CRP (hs-CRP) to my annual tests for 2023.
My Story: I am male, age 66, a retired chief scientist from one of the most stressful corporate technical-leadership jobs in the US (rocket industry), yet, I take no more pills. 5 years ago I consciously dropped statin for cholesterol and dropped metformin for "pre-diabetes" (in my case the statin lowered my cholesterol but raised my blood sugar! What I later learned about statins was eye opening) Without statin my cholesterol is still above the US guidelines, yet all my cardiovascular markers (hs-CRP, Coronary Calcium score, Apo-B, sd-LDL, Lipoprotein a, etc.) are all "normal". And, with my current lifestyle my blood sugar is also normal (HbA1C about 5) -- no "pre-diabetes".
... Unfortunately, most physicians in US today are pill-peddlers, they cling to demonstrably flawed studies that set guidelines, do not take the time to keep up with new knowledge and are beholden to the big-pharma lobbies. And most are too scared to go off-script from their outdated training lest they be sued. So, I now actively manage my health with sensible food (one meal a day) regular walks with my wife, and yoga at gym. (And still inventing aerospace components for fun in my retirement.) I have been doing annual blood tests for many years and plotting all the metrics ... Thankfully, with sensible lifestyle and taking charge of my own health all my biomarkers are good with Zero meds. It can be done.

Have you entertained the concept that for some people the giving is the reward? Try it. Don’t give if your doing so to get back something. Give when the giving is the reward itself and when you can be free of any expectation of what the gift will accomplish. If that means you never give then take a look at that.

A few years ago I went to see a doctor and mentioned CRP. The doctor was surprised that I was familiar with the word. She laughed it off but I insisted on getting tested. Turned out my CRP was off the charts. (80). Many thanks to Dr. Gupta for bringing CRP out of the closet. Like an ambulance, CRP is always around when bad things happen. The problem with treating heart disease and hypertension is that little is known about underlying causes. My CRP level did come down for unknown reasons but remains relatively high.

I switched to a low carb ketovore lifestyle nearly 5 years ago. I have always had higher cholesterol with good ratios, but still high. I used to be on a statin, but when the guidelines changed it wasn't recommended at that time. Before I went low carb, I always had a high hs crp around 3 -and felt actual pain with inflammation, especially after eating grains and sugars. All these years later, my hs crp is 0.5 and CAC is zero with one measuring "scant'. My cholesterol is still high, much higher I see, than when I ate plant based, unprocessed, organic. I now eat a lot of saturated fat, olive and avocado oil (no seed oils or grains/sugar). My AIC decrease from over 6 to 5.4. My HDL average is 85; triglycerides are 90 average; LDL - over 200 (!), c peptied average with insulin fasting at 11. I'm striving to bring that number down to 6. All my other labs, including thyroid are fine. A CGM (continuous glucose monitor) shows I stay 100% in range but I still worry over morning fasting levels being in the pre diabetic range. Spikes are all less than 170 for meals though, and it returns to baseline under 140 within 2 hours. I'm intrigued by the lean mass hyperresponder studies with LDL levels in the carnivore community, I wonder if you have had the opportunity to read this new study? I'm a 57 year old woman on no medications. My goal is to stay inflammation free with lifestyle and watch the rest fall into place. I've come to believe that inflammation markers are vital to know, and if I had the means to only monitor one lab, it would be hs crp.

Not to mention the SCIENCE and clinical knowledge that you bring to bear . . . we (I, for one) benefit from the practical essence of human health: Sleep, Stress, Nutrition, Happiness, . . . everything that is known to reduce our bodies inflammation and inflammatory response.
Please know that I learn much from each episode, in this case I've learned (with my autoimmune condition) that my mediocre and/or hard to pin down rare doc visits/labs have more often than not overlooked hsCRP. I will pay closer attention from now on!

This is the first TH-cam video where actual numbers are discussed instead of vague words like “elevated.” Some people have a CRP of 3 and their doctors want them to go on statins. Others are stating their CRP levels are 14, 24, 50 and the like, and their doctors do not have them on statins. I wonder whether these TH-camrs ever Eda the comments and try to understand what it is people want to know and then maybe address it more directly and specifically in the next video.

Thank you for explaining this so we'll! I've had a stroke last year and high blood pressure is now my hourly companion. If ones genetics is the problem, guilty as charged. My father died at 49 of a heart failure and stroke and his brother died of a stroke too.for years I was told because.l.am a woman and didn't smoke I needn't worry....surprise!!!at 69 I'm alive but sick.yuck!!!your video gave so much real information

The recent Lancet study puts to rest totally the importance of inflammation as a independent risk factor for CVD, yet most cardiologist refuse to admit it. They're still claiming inflammation -via hsCRP testing - is "just a bio marker" vs a risk factor that should be addressed. . Multiple studies find CRP is a better predictor of CVD than LDL-c. Two, data finds high CRP/low LDL are at greater risk of CVD than high LDL/low CRP. Denial of the importance of mitigating inflammation and regular CRP testing is simple cognitive dissonance at this point and is costing lives.

Thank you for the very informative session. I was challenged in the recent placement in Hospital in the Home area to deal with people with serious infectious diseases and being questioned for the markers of inflammation. I wish I had known the high sensitivity CRP as well as the test does not answer the ultimate cause and where the health issues was triggered.

My doctor does a full inflammation panel and not just CRP. Lpplac2.. myeloperoxidase and microalbumin-creatinine. In addition to oral glucose tolerance test with insulin survey. This will show your real risk but sadly most doctors don't bother with these tests end insurance usually doesn't cover them

Great job, doc! I presume most medical doctors don’t like what you’re doing because you’re demystifying medicine somehow 😉. They like to be on that sanctimonious pedestal... You’re the kind of doctor most patients would love to have taking care of them, you’re not just another drug pusher for Big Pharma. Keep it up! Blessings.

Gerry M cat I see your judgement of doctors and I do not see any truth in it. I hear your need for more medical understanding. Doctors would love for patients to have more medical understanding. Ease of their job and patient outcomes would improve. 2 things inhibit patient understanding. One is that doctors have limited time to spend with their patients. Two is that patients do not use resources for learning about their conditions, treatments, prescriptions. You can do something about your lack of understanding. Please do.

I agree with you to some extent! Dr. Gupta is the first Doctor who made me realise that I could have a role in my health. I go to a Cardiologist who has yet to give me any information, suggestions or knowledge of heart issues like Dr. Gupta has - from medications to life style, etc. He explains the issues, results, treatments and remedies. Everything I've learned, I learned from him and more importantly, I'm encouraged to do my part.
