- In this weeks video we take you to Slieve Foye (Sliabh Feá), sometimes referred to as Carlingford Mountain, which at 589m is the highest point in the Cooley Mountains and County Louth
The name Sliabh Feá means “mountain of the woods”. It has also been known as Sliabh Fathaigh, meaning “mountain of the giant”. Local lore suggests that it is the resting place of the giant, Fionn McCool, as its shape resembles a sleeping giant. It is said that McCool fought Ruscaire here by throwing a boulder, which became Cloughmore on Slieve Martin. (It's worth checking out our Slieve Martin/Cloughmore Stone video)
Other tales link the mountain to Queen Maeve (Maebh), whose army created a pass through the mountain known as Barnavave (Bearna Mhéabha) meaning "Maeve's gap” as told in the Irish Epic Táin Bó Cúalinge (the Táin)
It is also worth checking out our Carrowmore & Knocknarea video to see Queen Maeve's Cairn (Miosgán Meadhbha)
A very enjoyable hike with stunning views over Carlingford Lough.
