  • Carrowmore (An Cheathrú Mhór) is a large group of megalithic monuments on the Coolera Peninsula to the west of Sligo.
They were built around 4000 BCE, during the Neolithic (New Stone Age). There are thirty surviving tombs, making Carrowmore one of the largest clusters of megalithic tombs in Ireland.
Most of the sites are "satellite tombs" which surround the largest monument, placed on the high point of the plateau, the cairn (now restored) called Listoghil.
*Please note that shortly after filming the main cairn we were advised that Drones were not allowed on site, so if you visit please be respectful of the rules at this protected National Monument.
The west is dominated by the mountain of Knocknarea. Which, at only 327m, is visually striking, and at the summit is one of Ireland's largest cairns (55m), known as Queen Maeve's Cairn (Miosgán Meadhbha) dated around 3000 BCE
Miosgán Meadhbha is Irish for "Meadhbh's heap". Meadhbh is a queen of Connacht in Irish mythology, who is believed to have originally been a sovereignty goddess.

@@TheHoustonWay It is totally different now. Many of the monuments were overgrown, it was a struggle to find some of them. It did seem to me when I re-visited as an adult that there were far fewer monuments but it was possibly an imperfect recollection.
