"You can feel bullied" - Grant Langston talks about the realities of money as a young factory rider

  • When Grant Langston received his first big factory contract he put his father on the payroll along with his uncle who was his mechanic. Money has come between many riders and their families but through open communication the Langstons thrived financially and made sound investments that created a life after racing.
    //
Grant Langston is a South African World and AMA Motocross Champion, was the voice of the AMA Outdoors, along side Jason Weigant, for almost 8 seasons and owns one of the premiere motorcycle dealerships in the United States. He also happens to be one of the most fun dudes in the industry and I am so stoked I was able to chat at length with the man we call GL!

Grants parents are awesome people. When they had shop by Elsinore they would make the kids feel great after the races, ask let me see your trophy what place did you get.

GL seems like such a solid dude and I'm sure a big part of that is cool parents who gave solid advice and guidance. It's scary enough to race as a local pro when you're 18 let alone as a factory rider, the pressure must be immense. I know I will forever be grateful to my mom, dad, grandma and grandpa for their support and help.

This is one of the reasons I really like Jett and Hunter so much. They mention all the time in interviews what a huge sacrifice their parents made. These guys are so grateful for what their parents gave to them instead of being dicks about it all and leaving their parents out in the cold after they spent everything to push their mx career.

In many interviews they talk about how they paid certain people back as money started rolling in... Class act.

Grant is such a great person, I still remember in the years 2000 in San Marino GP (Italy) he gifted me his race jersey, I was a kid racing minicross and I have never met any other rider that was so nice to his fans and would chat with anyone. I really hope to meet him again one day!!

Great interview Gypsy. Always love your content!.
Saw this post by some guy that wondered why you make your interviews appear to be in person. I think it makes content more meaningful and personal, good job mate.
Hope the U Tube thing is paying off for you, we enjoy it!
With the Justin Bogle thing, it looks and he acts like he wants to continue racing next year, however even though he has the speed it is not consistent. Really feel for the guy but when you are in it , you have to be in to win it.
Many chances have rose up in the past but he never capitalized off the major factory input they provided for him. Wish him well though. Hope he has a nest egg put back to go racing on his own budget if it comes to that. It will give him a greater appreciation for the financial endeavours the past teams had provided. Everybody makes career job changes threw life, you just have to cope and be all in. Do it Justin!!!!!

I could listen to Langston talk life all day. Total 180 of who I thought he was. Everything he says is so measured & articulated so well.
And what a topic. When I worked in the industry, 70% of racers had $ issues with their parents. It’s tragic. Any of them that make it out on the other end families-intact are extremely fortunate.

Any child athlete who rises to the "Big Time" should have a conversation with football player Bernie Kosar about the perils of family when it comes to that huge financial change.

I used to work with a guy that spent a fortune on his kids racing MX. He had a 400k$ RV and sent his son to all the best mx schools in the states and in the end he could not afford tokeep his kid racing at that level with all the rich families and getting support and unobtainable parts.
He said it was crazy and his kid came home from cali (to northern BC, canada) and was like "Dad, dont even bother anymore" this kid is a beast on a bike and around here he is untouchable on a track, I think his little sister would smoke 90% of the local guys. He since then has quit riding all together ...probably 23years old now

You'd be surprised how common that is.its gone from a working man's sport to a rich man's sport.its been great for exposure, but not for growing talent.

Utter cringe. The embodiment of entitlement. The entire blue collar working class would laugh their asses off listening to this guy believing his own bullshit, and the interviewer blowing him at every turn. After his comments on why he left NBC made him sound like he'd literally never worked for a living in his life doing anything that didn't benefit him the most, he's just embarrassing himself at this point. Someone should tell him to dummy up.
