This is a very interesting conversation. I am an amateur, backyard horse owner in the USA. I research products endlessly. I will always pay more for good quality. Particularly in the states, we have tons of useless equine products that are all geared to only how they look. It’s very frustrating. As far as blanketing, We have really moved to almost no blanketing. The horses are way happier and healthier. Hair insulates (warms and cools) and provides water repellency. Professionals seem to over care for the horses because they are so worried about the horses “hurting themselves”. It’s so ridiculous.

It’s interesting what you say about your 2yr old. My 4yr old I never blanket much at all. She has a super short dense coat. My older mare 22 I blanketed a lot throughout her life looks like a wooly mammoth. I get a lot of heat for not blanketing them much at all now. But when it’s cold I give some extra hay and in the morning they are puffed out and when you feel in their coat they are not cold. I live in Texas so it will be freezing and then 80 degrees and I would be concerned the older mare would get really hot during those random days, but she always seems to be fine on her own without my interferance.

Zo vaak zeg ik het hier….paard is geen mens…niet zo warm aankleden!!! Zeker in stal! …maar het is een vastgeroeste overtuiging….😢
overigens vind ik het ook lastig hoor…met zo’n warme winter….dan weer 5 graden en paar uur later 11 graden….maar de Bucas ademend goed…dank voor de heldere uitleg….😊

It's been the bane of my life to see horses that have hair rubbed off over the point of shoulders and even point of hips, and pressure sore muscles on chest and over withers. And I can absolutely say I have seen the over blanketed horses develop thicker coats. And they then 'need' to be clipped... In South Africa. The blankets are promoted by saying at "x" temperature need to put blanket A on and then when temp drops lower needs a second blanket. 😮
