This is actually the first helpful tip / video I've found for my progressively dying monstera. All of the other articles I've read are so contradictory. I hope it's not too late for my plant.

Thank you for this !!! Ive watched so many videos on this and everybody tells you a different thing. I like how you used actual examples . Now I know for sure I’m overwatering and I need to put my Monstera in a smaller pot. That’s my main problem . It takes weeks for the soil to dry out between watering but I have it in a 12 inch by 12 inch pot at least it might even be bigger and my monstera is not quite as big as your healthy one in this video. Mine looks the same as your overwatered one too. Yellowing of the leaves and black spots on leaves and now on the stems I’m noticing too. I haven’t watered it in weeks either. The soil is dry on first top two inches but way wet further down. All this time I’ve been doing the , “water when top two inches are dry” method that so many of these plant people on TH-cam say to do but it doesn’t work for me when I have it in such a large pot . The pot is decently not completely dry when I just waited for top two inches to be dry before I watered it again but I suppose a smaller pot I would be able to water that way. Is it best to downsize my pot or just water less in current pot?

I have potted my monstera into a terra cotta pot and filled it with soil I had left over from the garden, turns out that soil is just perfect for my monstera it has grown tremendously since reporting it there, the soil I’ve accidentally used was the one for the garden grass which is in no way a plant soil because it very draining, turns out it’s perfect for my monstera and she absolutely loves it and is thriving.

Thank you so much - as I rescued quite a large Monstera from the side of the road (poor thing just had a note on it saying 'free' and I felt the guilt of driving past so went back to get it!) A lot of its leaves were yellow and I dumped its soil got a really nice big grey pot for it (a clever plastic one whereby the water doesn't dribble out the bottom?), spoke to it (as you do) repotted it (normal compost though?) and hoped for the best. The leaves have done exactly what you've described here so I've hope that it'll survive. I did do the classic thing of thinking 'it needs more water' so I'll leave it alone for now!!! Great video :D

Thank you for your video. My daughter brought me one for fathers day. As I work away from home 2-3 weeks at a time. I was unsure how much mater to give it and would always water before going away. However on my return from work had a couple of leaves completely brown with brown patches on the stems. I'm going to hold off watering for a while and open the blinds a little when I go away so it's not in the dark so long. Thanks again 🙏🙏😊

Great video! I love my Monstera. It’s amazing because it has gotten a few variegated leaves, and aerial roots that are insane. They are digging themselves into the dirt and I was told it was balancing itself and to leave it. Repotting it was a beast.
I always get confused because some say this is the Swiss cheese plant and others say that’s a different plant?

This should really help me, as I fear I repotted mine in too big a container, I’m getting some patchy leaves, which aren’t yellow, but not as dark green and the leaves are curling under a bit too. I’d thought this was through under-watering but I’d probably help it if I repot a bit smaller.

I have some indoor geraniums. One in particular, "Stretch" was HUGE with leaves every bit as big as your Monstera Deliosa, with massive blooms. I have not made a habit of trimming her, because I like the "wild" look. Anyway about a month ago, "Stretch's" leaves started going limp and then turning brown. It was at the top, bottom, and middle of the plant. New leaves and old leaves. At first it was only 1 or 2 leaves a day. As the problem increased, I wondered if she was root bound. I moved her from her 10" pot to a deep 16" pot. All new potting soil. I didn't realize that the weight of the pot meant I could not return her to the well lit upstairs bedroom, or even take her outdoors. Too heavy. I had to leave her in a downstairs room that doesn't get much light. The loss of leaves increased until yesterday I found myself removing 10 - 15 brown, dried up leaves a day. "Stretch" has gone from a lush full plant about 3' in diameter and 2 1/2' tall to a plant that is mostly stems. I'm heart broken. I'm assuming I must've caused this by over-watering. I thought I'd see if I could nurse her back to health then transplant her into a pot that is not so big and heavy. That would enable me to return her to the bright upstairs room. I fear now that it is too late to transplant her. She is too weak and dying. I'm guessing she has some root rot and cannot transport nutrients well. . I wonder if I gave her a heavy dose of antifungal if I could save her. What do you think?

very helpful video..I got mine two days back and will keep your tips in mind. I see you have a palm. I have pygmy date palm in my patio receiving 2 hours morning direct sun then shade. I got it a month back and potted it in good potting mix soil two weeks later with perlite and slow release fertilizer in a big pot. I cannot figure out why its leaves tips are brown and crusty? it just breaks after getting too crusty. I use moitsure meter so that I only water when it gets dry. Any suggestions?

Great video just bought one the other day. It had grown a bit wild and outwards before we got it so I staked it with thin supports as I want to encourage it to grow upwards. I see alot of people us moss poles am I better get one of these or will the thin supports be ok? They are approximately 4mm diameter. I also have the plant in a bathroom with a frosted window is it OK here?

I received Monstera from a friend of mine, they had too many plants and it wasn't doing well so I kinda rescued it. The good thing is the plant started growing new leaves as soon as I brought it home, the bad thing is the previous leaves still drooping and one of them has brown spots and drooping more through time however it still maintains green and doesn't turn yellow for some reason. I still think it's dying though, should I just cut it off?

I have an extra large monstera that I have had for a few years and have never repotted. It is extremely healthy and is ALWAYS pushing out growth. BUT, some of my most mature leaves are starting to lose color in some areas (especially around the outer edges) I am panicked right now because they are the largest leaves. It still retains water and the roots are not growing out of the pot. Yet, it has very little dirt because it has grown so much. I know I am not over or under watering it because I check the soil daily. Why is this happening and how can I fix it? Please answer!!

This is an excellent and succinct video. My monstera, that I've only had for about a month, is turning yellow just like yours. I did recently repot it to a similar sized space (the pot it came in was not draining properly), so I'm wondering if it could just be in shock? I've lost 4 leaves so far and it only has 7 more left. :( If you have any insight to know if it may just be on shock, I'd really appreciate it!

hydrogen peroxide in the soil, make sure you give it enough to soak through the first inch or so of the soil, it’ll kill the eggs larvae and adult stages of fungal gnats. Worked like a charm of my palm and my jade tree

How long typically does it take for the soil to dry out? I bought mine about 1.5 weeks ago from Trader Joe’s and it was really heavy (overwatered I’m assuming) I had left it outside for the night but we got a bit of a storm so I ran out and saved it but still got a good soak.. I have one small small leaf turning yellow. Should I repot now? Or continue to wait a few weeks and let it dry out? I also added a few tampons to the soil 😬 hopefully that was okay

      Hi Rose
I mean't that rather than soaking the soil completely, just add a little water to moisten the soil. I'm not sure whether this is the right thing to do, but I'm always worried about about triggering further root rot.
      Best wishes

I usually water mine once at least the top two inches of soil feels dry but you're better to let it dry out a little more if you are in doubt. They tolerate underwatering quite well, but as you can see from my video, it is easy to overwater them.

Thank you for your informative video where you made it very easy to understand the process of overwatering, which is what I think I'm dealing with. I have an absolutely beautiful Monstera that slowly started to get limp, yellowing leaves. It is a large one in a huge grower pot so, I think it holds onto water quite a while and I've tried my best not to overwater but, I believe that's exactly what is happening. I've decided to take it out of its pot and cut away any rotted roots and repot it, keeping a close eye on its progress. Again, I appreciate your video and hope you have a blessed day.😇
