Machining a surface grinder wheel hub PART 3

  • In the 3rd installment of machining a surface grinder wheel hub from scratch I make the flange that holds the little balancing weights.
    I do some trepanning, some inside and outside dovetail cutting.
    This part seems deceptively simple but gave my quite the machining workout.
    I also added some voice overs to explain some of the stuff I do, let my know if this is something you like or that I should just keep my trap shut.

    Leuke video's. Ook leuker als je er gesproken info bij geeft. Thx! Groeten uit Belgie

    Nice job Dennis, I think your English is very good. I am in the process of building wheel hubs for my Chevalier grinder, in fact I did some trepanning yesterday similar to your project. I built several tools before it worked well. Its the area where the balancing weights are located.

      Thanks Fred, trepanning is one of those operations where everything needs to be just right. Especially in thought material.

    Nice work. Just found your channel. As for the chatter, I agree with with the other comment which is the rubbing of the tool. What I think also doesn't help is the single bolt that holds the tool in the toolholder. This could allow the tool to vibrate. Keep up the nice content. Look forward to your next video. Greetings from Belgium and have a nice Christmas 🎄

      Yes, I agree it was a less than ideal setup. I’ll be grinding my own trepanning tool in the future. Have a marry Christmas as well 👍🏻

    Impressive work!

    Next time when trepaning, try lowering your toolbit a little at a time each time, making sure you still clear the radius of the cut. See if that doesn't help with the chattering.

    Great work .. no music .. thank you
    The face grooving tool is rubbing on the sides .. you ground a good bottom relief but not enough on the sides .. I think

      Thank you Ahmad, I checked but there was plenty of clearance all around. I think the tool was pulling into the work.

    Sure is tough material!
    I thought is was 20MnV6 hard Chromed piston rod
    I had a hard time with it on my lathe as well

      When everything works as expected you get a nice finish and it’s ok to work with. If not, this stuff will fight you tooth and nail. But is was cheap haha so you make do, thanks again for supplying the material 👍🏻

    Thanks for the video - I know its a big effort, but please continue, voice over included. May I ask how you are going to insert the clamping nuts?

    • @DennisDijkman
      @DennisDijkman  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Heinrich, do you mean the balancing weights? They are a 2 piece design split down the middle. Clamped down by a single set screw.

    Nice to hear you talk about it. Please do talk. Your English is fine. How will you get the balance weights into the dovetail slot?

    • @DennisDijkman
      @DennisDijkman  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you, my English is ok. It’s just my monotone voice that’s bugging me haha. The balancing weights are a 2 piece design cut through the middle.

      @@DennisDijkman I figured you must have a solution for the weights. You'll get modulation in your voice as you learn to relax. I'm looking forward to your videos.
