  • Unfurling the jib and raising the main on a Catalina 28 in Redwood Creek CA. Includes being overtaken by a trimaran and a single tack.

Dude! Put your main up first pointing into the wind, it’ll go up easier. Then fall of to lee and ease the main sheet a bit. Then unfurl your jib and adjust sheets to your heading and wind.
The way you did it left you vulnerable to a gust of wind blowing you off into the water when the boat suddenly heels.

Totally looks like SF Bay, not Redwood Creek

The winter on the Bay is not great for sailing. Cold and no wind. Keeping checking the forecast for a good day one of these weekends. FYI, I don't own a boat. Instead I belong to a club that has a fleet of Catalina 27s and 28s as well as Merit 25s and some 31'+ boats.

Seriously doubt you achieve 13 knts on that boat. Maybe if you are tracking with GPS and are running with a strong tidal flow. Otherwise thanks for posting

Completely agree about that max speed being bogus. Most of time the GPS jumps a lot when I sail under the San Mateo bridge causing the bogus max speed. Looked at this particular trace and it was when we were running DDW and with the tide. Still doubt it got that fast.
