Oregon Ducks' 2-0 Record Masks Struggles: Can They Turn It Around?

  • What is wrong with the Oregon Ducks football team? To some, that may be a silly question because they are 2-0. But they were favored to win by big margins against Idaho and Boise State. They beat Idaho by ten points and needed a last second field goal to beat Boise State this weekend. It has been a strange start to the college football season for the Ducks. We will explore some of the Oregon football shortcomings. And with a ticked off Oregon State team facing them this weekend, can the Ducks afford to take anything for granted?
If not for Oregon we might be spending more time trying to explain why the Penn State football team is in the same boat as the Ducks. Penn State survived a home scare from Bowling Green in a game the Nittany Lions were heavily favored.
Vegas odds-makers notice the Indiana Hoosiers 77 point performance last Friday and IU is now a favorite vs UCLA in Saturday's Big Ten opener at the Rose Bowl.
Following the Iowa Hawkeyes disappointing loss to rival Iowa State for the Cy-Hawk Trophy, we begin to wonder if Northwestern transfer quarterback Brendon Sullivan might be warming up in the bullpen for Cade McNamara who only threw for 99 yards Saturday.
We have not one, but two observations from this week's AP Top 25 list for college football and we will share them here. And finally, we have Tuesday Tweets right here on Locked on Big 10 with Craig Shemon.

Early season is so difficult to gauge. If Idaho goes on to win the FCS playoffs - a real possibility - Oregon's close win will make a lot more sense. Likewise with Boise. If the Broncos win out and make the playoffs - also a real possibility - Oregon's narrow win will make a lot more sense. The Ducks definitely need to get better if they want to be championship contenders, but Oregon's first two wins may also have been sneaky good.

They have talent, it's a coaching void. They tried the retreats around the State to get new players and returning players time to bond, but it's the coaching that is lacking. Dan Lanning is a keeper, but losing Mario Cristobal's expertise on coaching OL is being noticed now that he's been gone a couple of years. Position coaching isn't a quick fix. Oregon is going to have issues this year. Special teams return teams looks great I'll say. Great blocking to get a couple of TDs last weekend.

Oregons biggest problem right now is Oregon, If the ducks can get the O-Line on track it would solve a lot of these problems. Missed or incorrect blocking assignments are causing pockets and running lanes to collapse. The ducks are 5 guys getting it together away from solving the offensive problems.

@@clarencewalder2985 I agree that the Ducks were hyped like crazy in the offseason (clearly too much) however expectations being high isn’t necessarily a negative thing. They have the opportunity and potential to be a force in the BIG10 not only this year but for years to come. The team just needs to figure out their identity and keep building off positives and correct mistakes.

i think the biggest reason Oregon's struggled has clearly been the o-line & secondly the run game. i think a huge problem for the Ducks has been the loss of incredible talents like center Jackson Johnson & RB Bucky Irving. The RB room may have the guys to work things out via committee with James, Whittington(& hopefully Harris). Pritchards play at center however, has left a lot to be desired. Way too many mistakes when it comes to the guy snapping the ball. Currently the Ducks are favored by around 16pts against OrSt. But i don't see them winning by more than 10-14 if they don't really clean up the o-line play.

I think we have a problem with critical thinking in this country. First, I'm not saying the ducks are all that. They are not clicking yet. But Idaho had one of the top defenses in the country last year and made the national championship playoffs. Bruise State is projected to make the playoffs this year and has one of the best backs in the nation. Most of the rushing yards were on one breakaway run for 70 yards only. But the thing that bothers me is Alkron State, Portland State, Idaho State, and San Diego State are not Idaho and Boise St.

I’ve watched a few times but subbed today. You’re not wrong about anything, there was a lineup on Saturday that did pretty good and showed some continuity with no sacks or penalties so that’s promising but you’re right they’re still figuring some stuff out and don’t have much time especially against a rival. You should know if you don’t though that there is a storied history against Boise and I never thought that game was going to be more than a one score game when all was said and done. They have a chance to click, big plays, defense and talent is all present. Let’s get the oline at least decent and Gabriel in a rhythm. He honestly missed a lot of reads and looked a little jittery so get those things in line and we might be ready for Ohio state OR we might drop 1 of the next 3.

Craig, if Boise state’s qb and Jeanty stay healthy they’ll be in the CFP. Idaho is a top tier FCS team that would beat half of the FBS teams in the nation this year. So they are not teams that are going to get blown out by a team with o line “issues”. That said, almost every duck fan does wish that Dan would just pick a five man lineup for the o line and just let them work. They need cohesion, like you and many have said. Gabriel needs to be much more aware too, he literally never looked to the right side of the line on the first drive against BSU, and got sacked without having a clue.. that is not ok at all!

Let’s be real, Ohio state had one less fourth down than Oregon. Regardless of what the box score says, 75% of the game the buckeyes offense wasn’t productive. Once Pancho came in for Oregon, things changed. Boise State will be in the playoffs, let’s stop talking like they aren’t a quality opponent. Idaho was 9-3 with the hardest strength of schedule in the FCS. They have one of the best secondaries in the nation, regardless of division. Gabriel still completed most of his passes. Boise State QB was 17/40, but Oregon had 12 pass break ups! That doesn’t happen very often! Once they get the run game figured out, which they will figure out, we will roll. Let’s not forget what will stein did for us last season. And if you guys are real fans, you would know that tight end under center play was from the Ohio state game which netted in a first down and a win. But yet Oregon fans are sour they did that play even though it worked and it’s part of our history. The hook and ladder was from a Stanford game a decade ago which set up a touchdown. Oregon has really ignorant fans.

You can tell they had a game-plan to use a vanilla offense, and limit what they put on film for Ohio state, since that’s a program changing win…and the other games are not. Lanning n company thought they’d just be able to line it up, run the ball, and dink and dunk it down the field, and they’d win with ease, but during the first game, they realized that wasn’t possible, since they couldn’t run the ball like they wanted too. The second game they tried the same things, but it wasn’t working so they had to put stuff on film for Ohio state, because they couldn’t keep limiting the actual offense.
I do agree with everyone, that Oregons OL is a work in progress, but the last quarter of Boise state, they found their new starting OL for now. Or at least until Bedford and Iuli come back from injury.
To be honest, I’m not worried, I’m just frustrated that they’re messing around with these lesser talented teams, so they can show as little as possible on film for Ohio state. I mean come-on…Gabriel had multiple runs in the Boise state game that would extended drives, but they don’t want the Buckeyes to know that part of this Oregon offense. And in the Idaho game, I counted twelve 30yd passes that were open, but again, that wasn’t part of the vanilla game plan.
But here we go again. We are gonna see if we can run the ball, and dink and dunk our way past Oregon state on Saturday…and if that doesn’t work, they’ll open up the offense a little bit again…even though they can easily score 60 on this team, and the other two, but again, they chose to go vanilla.

Giving the Ducks could be in Trouble! That could likely mean those Cheaters will finally be punished for their CHEATING WAYS. They should’ve been a long time ago. I hope those Cheaters FINALLY LOSE WAY MORE GAMES. EITHER THAT OR GET PUNISHED. Those Oregon Ducks deserve the Harshest Long Term Sanctions ever. Or better yet! Being forced to DISCONTINUE THEIR FOOTBALL PROGRAM ALL TOGETHER. That would do those schools that have played them that have been victims of them & their Doping Drugs a favor. And that would do me a favor too! Knowing that all along they have cheated that bad! And due to that! For the first time ever! I am wishing I was out of this Nation. Giving how Traitorous they have become since they won last year’s Fiesta Bowl when they were supposed to have been BANNED FROM POST SEASON PLAY. This US due to have have turned themselves into traitors. Which means I am not supporting the US National Team until the worst finally happens for those Ducks! And God Forbid! Should they make a Bowl Game again! They had BETTER LOSE IN IT. OR MY GRUDGE WITH THIS NATION IS NOT STOPPING ANYTIME SOON!

Think that Nebraska is a top 15th team. As for the SEC teams they will cannibalize each other. In other words there will be more Big Ten teams in the top 10. Fight On!

Don’t cry because it’s over. Cry because it never actually happened and the seasons and natty are all getting vacated. Cheaters of the west

Oregon fans need to accept that ducks are not gonna win all their games this year in spite of the manageable schedule

Watched Ducks game for the second time on Big10 Network and they looked worse in the replay. For the enormous amount of talent they have the performance has been underwhelming, disjointed, undisciplined and frustrating to put it mildly. Preseason hype had us believe Ducks were moving into a new era of dominant line play just like the big boys in the SEC. Haven't seen that. Hoping for the best and preparing for something else.

Oregon is not in trouble at all!
Idaho is ranked 4th in the FCS and BSU is a perineal top 25 school

Title contenders should kill those teams by 20+ points. Oregon should be very concerned about their performance so far

    What’s wrong?
    They aren’t that good
They are never that good. They run a self hype train, and stupid people buy into it.
