    These shows were my happy place as a 16 year old in 1989, and even more so now I'm in my 50s in this even weirder world.

    A Year in Provence, with John Thaw and Lindsay Duncan is also a wonderful comedy series of a couple retiring to France. I watch it over again every few years!

    Written by John Chapman, who himself emigrated to France in his later years. Not sure if fiction followed real life or the other way round. Anyone know?

    They used to carry this TV show on WEDU-Channel 3 (the PBS station out of Tampa) in the late 90s/early 2000s.

    Does anyone know what the game the men in Callais were playing at 21:36 ? If you have any ideas at all, I'd LOVE to read them!! I've tried looking it up online with no success. :-(

      CitiZen Try reading up on it. Dreadful. Posters always think ANY disastrous era was better than now. They will think that about today in the future!

    • @jeraldbaxter3532
      @jeraldbaxter3532 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@653j521 It's human nature; unless our past was TRULY awful, it is almost always so much better than the present, in retrospect, because we know how that chapter of our lives ended. The present? We're too busy worrying about the newest covid variation, and paying bills, being lonely,etc. For me, most of the '70's and '80's were the golden years, but reading old journals, most of the time I was all distraut because of jobs, relationships, health- the usual things we do to sabotage our chances of happiness in the here and now. That's why shows like this are still popular in an ephemeral way, they allow us to return to a time we perceive as happier. Yes, it's living vicariously, but it brings people some pleasure and that's not a bad thing.

    As much as she annoyed me, you'd miss Sonia coming round scrounging stuff.
    EXCELLENT, The Shepard's Pie clinched it.

    • @Wotdermatter
      @Wotdermatter 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do not know where you were educated but your English leaves much to be desired. Check, "...she annoyed me, you'd miss...". The pronouns do not match. Also, the first Shepherd's Pie looked awful, sloppy and lacking peas and carrots and you used incorrect spelling for Shepherd's Pie by putting Shephard's Pie.
      'nuf sed.

      Gross food.

    • @marg4229
      @marg4229 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@ekcentrik I'm sure it depends on how it is made. Mine is browned ground beef, peas and small carrots, browned tiny bits of onion and sometimes sauteed mushrooms all in a bit of beef gravy with mashed potatoes on top and lightly baked and top toasted in oven. It can't be a gross if you adjust it to your liking. This is the only casserole type dish (layers of food in a baking pan) that I ever eat. My kids ate everything I cooked and if it wasn't a favourite dish, then I considered it my fault for not preparing it in the tastiest way.

    • @edwardmmanns7454
      @edwardmmanns7454 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It is called shepherds pie because it is made with lamb which is from the sheep they care for. If it is made with beef it is ranchers pie or beef pie.
