  • 90% of those dying from diverticulitis, which is inflamed diverticular disease, didn't even know they had it! How does diverticulosis treatment look like? Can we prevent diverticulosis?
    More than half of western populations over the age of 60 are prone for diverticulitis, as they already suffer from diverticular disease! How can we prevent and treat it?
    Diverticular disease is often preventable. It is a diet-driven disease. The most important aspect is to enable stool to pass your colon without much effort. A healthy gut microbiome and a high fiber intake are crucial! Your stool size can easily double when switching to a high fiber diet, which makes it so much easier for your colon!
    It is never to late to adopt a healthy fiber-rich diet! Even if you already have diverticulosis, you can always give your best to prevent the diverticulae from getting inflamed and dangerous!

      Or just buy a lb. of powder when it's on sale. That stuff is the best interior demulcent out there, you can use it as baby food when someone is sick. Great for alcoholics as well. Also try marshmallow (another emollient) and some of the medicinal mushrooms. They do amazing things down there.

    Thanks for the very informative video! As for probably many people, I was not aware of this condition and disease.
    My question is, is there a way to find out how far the condition of diverticulosis is evolved or, if the person is healthy? I mean before of all these worrisome symptoms.
    I hope the answer is not an painful medical examination 😂.

    • @Nerdtritionists
      @Nerdtritionists  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thanks for your feedback! Well, usually diverticulosis is discovered when the patient arrives at the doctor with severe abdominal pain. If the patient is not showing severe symptoms, diverticula are usually diagnosed with a CT (computed tomography) scan. The patient will probably receive a solution containing barium, which helps to illuminate the structures inside the body, which will reveal the diverticula. If the diverticula are not diagnosed accurately, a colonoscopy is necessary. 😣
      So, prevention is key 😄 eating lots of whole plant foods with lots of fiber will reduce your risk!

      Eva is right, no added sugar is a start but the only fruit juice you should ever drink is whole fruit blended, never juiced, and even then, take it easy. Sweet juice without the fiber is death, no matter how nutritional it is. Veggie juice absolutely! Try half a whole organic lemon and half a cucumber blended well with some water before breakfast. This also makes a great base for other things like kale or blueberries or herbs/powders. You will soar! Try reversatrol if you want that grapeskin goodness, or just stick with wild grapes or the other purple fruits that have less sugar. Those grape sugar bombs they make now are not natural.

    • @Nerdtritionists
      @Nerdtritionists  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Hi Lorraine,
      For diverticulosis prevention, a diet high in whole plant foods, thus high in fiber, is a great choice. For gut health, a large variety of different whole plant foods is also beneficial! As stated in our video, it is important to eat a high-fiber diet to feed your gut bacteria. The more you feed your gut bacteria, the larger and softer your stool is, which makes it easier for your digestive tract to move it around.
      If you already have diverticulosis or diverticulitis, a similar logic applies. At the same time, you want to make sure that your diet is anti-inflammatory. So again, a lot of whole plant foods, intact grains, legumes, nuts, fruits, berries, etc.
      On an individual level, some diverticulitis patients have reactions to specific foods, e.g. corn, nuts or seeds, the idea being that they might be caught up in the diverticulae. This is something to be careful about and maybe to discuss with your health care provider.
      In general, a well-planned diet high in whole plant foods, including starchy and other vegetables, fruits, legumes, intact grains, nuts and seeds (maybe as nut or seed butter),... is a great choice.

    Thank you! I'm 45, and they found this during my colonoscopy. Which fiber should I take, soluble or insoluble? It's it ok to eat rice and peas?

    • @Nerdtritionists
      @Nerdtritionists  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you for sharing your situation! It's important to manage diverticulitis with dietary choices. Here are some general guidelines:
      Fiber Types: Both soluble and insoluble fiber are beneficial. Soluble fiber dissolves in water and can help soften stools. Insoluble fiber adds bulk to the stool, aiding in regular bowel movements. A balanced intake of both is usually recommended.
      Rice: White rice is lower in fiber and may be gentler on the digestive system during a flare-up. Brown rice, with more fiber, is better for regular maintenance. Start with white rice and gradually introduce brown if tolerated.
      Peas: Peas are a good source of fiber and nutrients. They can be included in your diet, but it's crucial to monitor how your body reacts. Start with small portions and see how your digestive system responds.
      Hydration: Ensure you're drinking enough water, as fiber can be more effective with proper hydration.
      Consult a Healthcare Provider: Always consult your healthcare provider or a registered dietitian for personalized dietary recommendations based on your specific condition and medical history. They can create a plan tailored to your needs.
      Remember, dietary adjustments for diverticulitis can vary from person to person. It's essential to listen to your body and make gradual changes to see what works best for you. Regular follow-ups with your healthcare provider will also help in managing this condition effectively.

I was so sure that he either diverticulitis or he is going to develop one. So, I started him on high dose of stool softer and laxatives. For the last one week, he had several bathroom visits a day but his pain is reduced a lot. I will continue the same routine for a month but will change the type of laxative and stool softener and will continue soft food until he is completely pain free.

    • @Nerdtritionists
      @Nerdtritionists  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Healthy people can eat a lot of vegetables and fruits, like 20 portions each every day (in case they have adapted to such a high fiber intake). There is no need to restrict yourself to 5 portions each, for example. (Just with high-oxalate leafy greens, you should be careful).
      There is no clear definition of what a "balanced diet" is. I understand that extremes, as in not following the norm, are seen with a bias. When it comes to diet, following an "extremely" healthy diet with lots of fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains, nuts and seeds, is often a great idea!
      There is no nutrional need to eat bread, cheese or mince. Instead these processed grains, the fatty and high-sodium cheese and the mince (processed red meat is a class 1A carcinogen) are not health promoting. That does not mean that a diet containing these foods can not be healthy, but they should not be overconsumed.

    I see this video was from 2 years ago, I'm hoping someone will still see my comment and question.
    I am a 60 year old male, very fit, 5' 9", 160lbs, resting heart rate 54 to 56 bpm, cholesterol 135, blood pressure last week was 123 / 66. I do not eat red meat, and I get what I thought was enough fibre in my diet, through cereals (hot and cold), assorted nuts / trail mixes and bananas and apples every day.
    Last Friday, July 7, 2023, I developed severe pain in my lower right back. It was progressively getting worse by the hour, and my wife drove me to the ER. The first 2 hours at the ER (this is the US, after all), everyone was sure with the pain level and symptoms I had that it was kidney stones.
    After blood work and a CT scan of my abdomen and pelvis, kidney stones were ruled out, everything with my kidneys and other organs were normal. The scan did reveal (what the doctor is saying, anyway) that I have Diverticulosis with no evidence of Diverticulitis. The doctor gave me no instructions on what to do after leaving the ER. I asked what should I do, he said eat more fibre. My wife and I are researching everything we can.
    So, in summary, the only symptom / condition that meets the diagnosis is that I am 60 years old. I have no other symptoms / conditions that are stated as having Diverticulosis. No pain in the left side of my abdomen, no blood in my stool, no fever. My pain is in the lower RIGHT side, in my back. All other sources on this state if you have pain (which no source states for Diverticulosis, only for Diverticulitis), it will be on the lower left of your abdomen. I have zero abdomen pain on EITHER side, it is my lower back, on the RIGHT side.
    Also, this is July 13th, 6 days post ER trip, and I am still having pain in my lower RIGHT back, no abdomen pain on either side. I have been on a self-imposed no solid food diet, and have lost 4 pounds since the weekend. I need to know what this actually is, and how to treat it. My primary doctor has been useless. I have tried to set up two appointments this week, and they have jerked me around, never getting to see him at all. I have an appointment with a GI, but it is next Tuesday, July 18th.
    Does anyone at this channel, or anyone reading the comments, have anything that can shed light on the fact I have been diagnosed with Diverticulosis, and the only factor I have is I am 60 years old?

      @@Nerdtritionists Unfortunately, there has been no progress with my condition. I have been to 7 different doctors, and (2) CT scans and an MRI later they have told me they do not know what is causing my pain.
      I realize you can't give medical advice, but I have been asking many people in several medical fields if they have ever heard of my condition, ever dealt with it, or know someone that has.
      I'm just trying to get to the right doctor. It is going on 3 months of every day pressure and pain, and then the numbness that no one cares about. I have told multiple doctors that my right flank has been numb since July 7th, and not a single one did anything about it. Just changed the subject and pretended I didn't say anything about it.
      I thought doctors would be trying a little harder than what I have seen in our hospitals over the past (3) months of weekly visits to one specialist or another.
      I have right flank pain, pressure and numbness when:
      1. Standing, right flank pressure
      2. Sitting, right flank pain
      3. All of the time, right "love handle" numb
      This is every day as soon as I get up in the morning until I lay down to sleep. The only time the pressure and pain go away is when I lay on my back. Within 10 minutes they are gone. As soon as I stand up, the pressure starts, and after eventually sitting down, it starts to turn to pain.
      This cycle just repeats itself day after day, with not a single person in the entire Los Angeles medical field has any idea why. But I sure do have a great medical plan! Or so I'm told, anyway...

      However, I am hoping my 11th doctor (yep, 11 doctors in 6 months to try to figure this out) has finally figured it out. He is an Orthopedic spine specialist that ordered Thoracic spine imaging, and has told me I have a herniated disc at the T12-L1 area of my spine.
      I'm going for an epidural on Tuesday. The doctor told me the steroid medication used should reduce the nerve inflammation to allow the disc to start healing. I am hoping this is finally the end of my 6 month long nightmare of daily pain.

      Hey carolynjones-winfieldbashi971, thank you for your comment!
      A whole food plant based diet helps to prevent the formation of new diverticula because of its high fiber content. And the anti-inflammatory compounds found in whole plant foods decrease the risk of complications, such as bleeding or diverticulitis.
      Inflammatory foods, such as junk food, refined grains, plant oils, meat and dairy should be avoided. Be careful with whole nuts and seeds. If you have experienced pain after eating whole nuts and seeds, please grind them or use nut and seed butters instead. You should not avoid nuts and seeds in general! Corn and popcorn are other candidates to reach your colon undigested.
      We hope this helps!

There are also non-antibiotic therapies for non-complicated diverticulosis, but they are not suitable for everyone. I have been diagnosed with diverticulitis. I don’t eat red meat, I only eat chicken, lots of seafood, lots of salads and fruits,nuts, and I still got it. So how is that possible? That would mean that info is incorrect.

    • @Nerdtritionists
      @Nerdtritionists  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for your comment! :)
      Eating a high-fiber diet can reduce the risk for diverticulosis and diverticulitis, it does not mean that such a diet can prevent these complications completely. You would minimize your risk if you ate around 100g of fiber a day over your entire lifetime, well, and nobody really does that.
      Once you have diverticulosis, you want to reduce the risk of inflammation. It's great that you do not eat red meat and instead eat lots of salads, fruits and nuts. Moderate your intake of chicken and seafood, they do not contain any fiber and do not help reduce inflammation. Look into introducing legumes and intact grains (test these carefully and chew well) into your diet.
      I wish you all the best on your journey ahead!

      When reading comments on other diverticulitis sites, I read more than one comment where people went on the carnivore diet and now don’t have symptoms. If meat is the problem then it’s likely because of how we raise the meat and what we feed the animals-and what we’re doing to plants isn’t much better

    I'm confused. I was at the ER on the 3rd of June and they did a ct and found inflamed hemicolon. Called it diverticulitis. Gave me abx with no diet. Saw my Dr and ge alerted me I should have been on a BRAT DIET and since I'm finished with my abx course. He cringed and Said I want you on a low fiber diet for 2 weeks. And now this video says to take high fiber???? So lost please help. I don't want that lower left about pain again.

      Yes, Brat diet for the acute phase and then fiber for the healthy bacteria to cling to. Get a good probiotic. I recommend AOR brand boulardi and their 3 strain variety. In the acute 6 want foods like bananas, rice, white bread, and apple sauce that are easily broken down. If pain is too severe, it should be clear fluids 24-48 hours, then full fluids, protein shakes for 24-48 hours, then Brat for 2-5 days. Then, gradually introduce fiber like mashed sweet potatoes, make sure the fiber is cooked well, and no raw fiber until you're beyond 2 weeks symptom free.

    Uhhhh….
    Here I am in the hospital for the second time, trying to figure out maybe why I have diverticulitis.
    I eat more fiber than anyone I know. How the fuck do I get more fiber into my diet than I already do?

    • @Nerdtritionists
      @Nerdtritionists  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Boobashoob,
      I am sorry to hear that!
      Eating a healthy, high-fiber diet reduces the risk for diverticulosis. But this does not mean that eating more than a certain amount of fiber a day will stop this disease in every individual. Someone eating only 15g of fiber a day might still not get it, while someone eating 40g of fiber a day might get it. It also depends on what the person ate over the last 2-3 decades.
      In your case, you already have diverticulae, so it is important that you keep eating an anti-inflammatory, high-fiber diet! Of course, follow the advise of your health care provider!
      Here are some general recommendations of how to (slowly) increase your fiber intake:
      - replace white flour products with whole grain products, or replace all flour products with intake grains altogether
      - integrate more berries and legumes into your diet
      - look for high-fiber alternatives for foods you commonly eat, e.g., bean patty instead of meat, hummus or other plant-based spreads instead of cheese/meat on bread,...
      You should try to eat at least 40g of fiber a day! The more the better, but increase your intake slowly and consult with your health care provider on any drastic changes! Here are some resources that might be helpful:
      - Daily Dozen app by Michael Greger MD from nutritionfacts.org (also his book "How Not To Die")
      - The book "Fiber Fueled" by Will Bulsiewicz MD
      Best wishes!

    what foods to eat with diverticulitis

    • @Nerdtritionists
      @Nerdtritionists  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      There are two things you want to accomplish with your diet. 1. Avoid inflamed outpouchings. 2. Prevent new outpouchings from forming.
      1. is accomplished by eating an overall healthy diet. So, lot of vegetables, fruits, starches, and legumes which act anti-inflammatory. Foods to avoid/reduce: animal products, tropical vegetable oils, refined oils, sweets, excess white flour products. Intact grains (brown rice, rye, millet, sorghum, spelt,...) are also very healthy, but some diverticulitis patients have trouble with corn or other intact grains. Try them out yourself to see how you react. And chew well! ;)
      2. is achieved by eating a lot of fiber-rich foods to soften the stool and increase stool size. So again: vegetables, fruits, starches, (intact grains), and legumes.
      Nuts and seeds are very healthy, but again some diverticulitis patients have trouble with whole nuts and seeds. So, test then yourself, and maybe go for ground up nuts and seeds or nut/seed butter, like tahini.
      Always consult your doctor about major dietary changes, especially if you take prescription medications!

      @@Nerdtritionists I think I got my 1st flare up bc I ate too many seeds and nuts? Is that possible though...just a theory. I was already eating healthy. I was vegan than alkaline for 5-6 yrs. Before that I ate fish,chicken ,some beef, turkey no pork. Still alot of veggies and blk,red ,spelt flour / bread, all fruit, idk what I did wrong when I was vegan changed alkaline 😭 I had a colonoscopy in 2020 and had 6 small marble size pouches. No flare up since 2020 🙏🏾 I don't again either . I now eat veggies with no seeds and that's not alot of choices and fruit. Im terrified to eat seeds and nuts now. 🤦🏾‍♀️ I miss my food. Also pepper ....blk pepper ,chili pepper flakes ..what about that ? Please help .

      @@nefertitithompson5003 I'm sad to hear that you had a flare up! Even though nuts, seeds and indigestible pieces of foods have been found in outpouchings, it is unclear that they are the cause of flare ups. In general, this is something you should talk about with your doctor or special diverticulosis dietician, if you have one. Restricting all veggies that contain seeds might not have an overall positive effect. In general, you should continue to eat a high-fiber diet, and even nuts and seeds are not generally advised against. Then again, many diverticulosis patients attribute their flare ups to nuts and seeds.
      What you can do, of course, is eat nut butters, or in general blend more of the foods you are currently avoiding. E.g. by having a creamy soup or a smoothie. For your health, try to keep eating a high-fiber diet and a large variety of whole plant foods!

    I have heard doctors contradict each other on nuts and popcorn causing and not causing the disease. Who's right?

    • @Nerdtritionists
      @Nerdtritionists  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Indeed, there is some debate and there are anecdotal accounts about nuts or popcorn having an effect on diverticulitis.
      Just to be clear, nuts and popcorn have nothing to do with the cause of diverticulosis, the formation of diverticulae (outpouchings). The debate is roughly as follows: Diverticulitis means that you have inflamed diverticulae. Nuts or popcorn can sometimes be found in the inflamed outpouchings (when doing autopsies). Now, does the presence of nuts and popcorn cause the inflammation or not?
      According to this video by Dr. Greger (nutritionfacts.org/video/diverticulosis-nuts/), the answer is: people with diverticulitis who eat nuts or popcorn have lower rates of inflammation.

It's worth a shot to try and see what's in there. It feels like cancer to me and it is fed by smoking and other stuff.
