This is great info! Thank you for going through this entire process for our benefit. It's so good to have a heads up on those "hidden" requirements. Thanks again
I went through the same process with a 2014 Lexus RX350 a few weeks ago. Carvana and Carmax both low-balled my car. I found a Toyota dealership that gave much more in trade for a new car, so that's what I did. Bottom line, shop your car around. Most places will only give a low-ball wholesale value. Selling it yourself is best but more hassle.
My transaction was flawless. I happened to renew my registration three months prior, so there was plenty of surplus time. But your point is well taken, they should highlight that requirement that they need 75 days of registration. They came and picked up my Tesla Model 3. I did all of my paperwork online, including selecting the electronic payment. The time they spent looking in my car over was probably minutes. And by the next business day, I had a check deposited in my account. How would I rate them, probably five on a scale of five. Again I had no issues whatsoever and they were on their way
Thanks for commenting! This is helpful to those who are considering Carvana. I'm glad your transaction went smoothly. I expected mine to until it took that wrong turn down the registration detour. It all worked out, but having your experience posted here shows that it's not all imperfect.
This was very informative - I have toyed with selling my SUV to both and found both offers to be around $1K apart but always wondered how would things ultimately play out with carvana when they make an offer sight unseen. I never finished the process. Yes, they should just list all their requirements upfront regarding registration expiration etc. Thanks again
Thanks for your comment. It never hurts to get the quotes, and in the past I used one as a basis for knowing what I might expect if I used my car as a trade-in. However, it was the sight unseen part that kept me from feeling totally confident in their offer, but they came through so lesson learned.
Thanks for your comment! I have been keeping my eye out for it. If I do see it, I'll do a quick followup video to share. If you're subscribed, you should get notified when I post it.
Apples to apples would have been to get both quotes online. I've sold cars to Carmax, Carvana and the late Vroom. Had loans on 2 of the sales, no big deal. Good video. Thx.
You're right about getting a quote online for both. I didn't originally think anybody would be interested in my selling off my car and just started documenting what I was doing, so the process was unscientific. Thanks for your comments!
Did you really think they would just give you a check and nothing much required from you? Try selling to a regular dealer, you will see what's a real hustle.
It's true what you say, but I try to anticipate stumbling blocks and do my best to avoid them. But yes, dealing with regular dealers is next level. Thanks for your comment.
@MyAutomobileObsession by the way, I have sold cars to both carvana and carmax, they similarly are better than regular dealer. I would just go with the one that give more always.
You made me look! It was a sound that just happened at the moment I opened the door. The MINI 4-door has short doors and we weren't close to that car next to me. If I had hit it, you would have seen my face turn green as I'm allergic to door dings and would have cringed if I hit that car. Thanks for your comment!
I did something similar with my 2022 Subaru Legacy. Only one company would make an offer for it online and that was EchoPark. I drove to my local EchoPark location and told them I wanted to sell my car. It took a very long time, but they paid me more in person than what they offered me online. It was a strange experience, but it worked out pretty well for me.
Thanks for commenting. That's what I thought would happen when I brought my car in, so I was really surprised at how low the offer was. Glad it worked out well for you!
Your car is currently in the process of someone purchasing it on Carvana. It sold for $27,590. It’s in my favorites on the Carvana app just in case the deal falls through for the current person buying it. Lol. It looks like you really taken great care of it.
Hey there - Thanks for this update! I was keeping an eye on my car and hadn't checked in a few days. So they turned it around pretty quickly. And yes, I owned that car just under 7 years and I really love taking care of my cars - I just seem to appreciate them more when I do.
You are absolutely correct, but I chose not to do it because I don't live in an area that makes it easy to sell privately and handle test driving, etc - I have also had impostor buyers contact me in the past and want to close deals under suspect circumstances, so I just decided I'd rather get less, but actually get it. But thanks for your comment and I do agree that a private party would give me the most.
I recently sold an 06 F150 with only 60,000 miles on it in very good shape. Carmax offered me $4500, Carvana $3800. In three days, I sold it myself for $9500. All I did was put it on FB Marketplace and parked it out by the road with a sign on it. Any "aggravation" (and there really wasn't any) is well, well worth the extra $5000. Not sure about where you are, but the process for selling a car in my state consists of them handing you cash, and then you handing them the keys and the title signed over to them on the back. It seriously can't get any easier than that.
@@scottiswatchingtele scammer? How the hell is someone going to scam you? Seriously, how is that even possible? They hand you cash, you hand them keys and a title. Done and done.
Sold our mom's 2017 Chevy Trax on August 28th. They came and picked it up for 290. Gave her 13000 for it and 3 weeks later its on their site for 18590! Which is what she paid for it brand new in 2017.
Thanks for commenting. They say it's unique to California, but I still think it should have been documented as they have sellers input that information more than once.
Carvana usually gives more money. I used to buy cars from Facebook marketplace. I'd recondition them and sell them to Carvana. Carvana usually gave more. I've also sold to Vroom. Which is now out of business. I've also sold to CarMax. But, I would sell to whoever offered the most. I've made some good money from reselling to these online retailers.
I have sold three cars to Carvana. The bmw was $8k more than anyone else. The crv was $4k more & almost what I had paid for it. You have to jump through some hoops for sure, but you got more.
You're right. In the end it all worked out and next time I probably won't be so skeptical. It was a lot to do with the unknown. Thanks for your comments!
This was interesting timing for this topic..........I just got an online offer from Carvana. I was floored and wondered if it was just all automated or someone was smoking crack. My car is in mint condition, never in an accident and according to my dealer, where it was just in for routine service a week ago, maybe the lowest mileage for this car in the country. The trade-in value for my car is between $16-17,000. After inputting all the info for Carvana, their offer was $2,600. Their summary said 1 accident....this is absolutely not correct. Now, after reading some reviews online and watching this video, I may skip Carmax and just sell to a private buyer.....something that is a pain in comparison, but $2,600 is a slap in the face for a mint condition luxury car with every option available and in perfect condition.
Thanks for commenting. That sounds so random, but one thing you mentioned makes me think that there may be erroneous information on the Carfax report that they use to determine if the car has ever been in an accident. You might want to do a little behind the scenes checking as I know that will taint their offer. Nothing else makes sense! If you haven't sold yet, you'll want to make sure there is no bad/incorrect history as private buyers often check Carfax too. I learned that my dealer reported details on my car every time I brought it in for service, same with my insurance company, so something to check. Good luck!
@@MyAutomobileObsession Yes, good suggestion......I purchased a Carfax report when I bought the car, when it was just a year old, and no accidents, but a very detailed history from the time it was purchased at the dealer and the service history. Was perfect and has been treated that way since with all dealer service, even though I could have done it, but instead, attempting to maximize resale value through a perfect service history. I have been a "car guy" for more than 50 years, am trained in body work and painting and all mechanical areas, and I can spot a car that has been in even a minor accident in a minute. On the other end, I have also bought some salvage cars, in addition to many new cars, and I have had Autocheck (and one Carfax) reports that left out important details. (at least Carfax refunded me) Good that you had a better experience.

I did, and it's always been easy and straight forward. Auto club has the DMV system in their office, so my regustration was in there immediately. I was afraid that renewing there caused my delay, but went back to confirm and after ultimately speaking with DMV directly discovered that it was their internal systems that caused a delay.
I wonder if you printed out your carvana quote and took it to carmax for them to at least match it, if that would’ve worked given that they changed their initial offer to you the second time they contacted you.
Thanks for commenting. I challenged a quote the previous time I got a CarMax appraisal and they held firm, and said only if the quote expires is it subject to change. I can see how that keeps the word haggle out of the equation, but forces a yes or no decision in the moment. Truth told, I would have been more comfortable using them, but the difference in the offer was just too great.
They’re making you register your car for 75 days or more because their average days on lot is less than 60 days, must be something to do with them not registering the car.
Unless there is something really different about your car (mileage, prior damage), I'd suggest you try a different vendor (Carmax if you used Carvana or Carvana if you used Carmax). Also, remember that quotes only last for 7 days and you can try again - and just make sure that you have all of the details about your car so that nothing is missed. Good luck!
Why do you even want to waste your time with these car buyers? Everybody knows their scheme. This Goes for every person, The Best Way to sell your car is to a private party, specially if you have a low mile mint condition car
Hardly a waste of time. Anyone that takes the time to watch this will benefit. I've used Carmax to get an idea of wholesale price. I was selling a very nice Lexus that brought $3,300 more the Carmax offer and only took 4 days. Not everyone wants to fool with retailing though.
Thanks for your comment. I agree that private party is likely the best way to maximize profit, but it's not suitable for everybody for multiple reasons.
Not always. When you sell private you lose the sales tax deduction on the purchase of the new vehicle. Also, when you sell private you risk running into an unhinged buyer. Selling private often results in a higher net return but there are more things to consider, for many, when disposing of a vehicle. Personally, I would never sell private unless I know the buyer well.
Why not attempt to sell Person to Person instead of to Dealerships whom are going to build in their costs and profit? I would buy a car from you! Note, anyone can put a stop payment on a check!

I live 15 miles from a US border and cars have been known to drive away and so on, so I mainly didn't want to take the risk with something north of $20K. But I otherwise completely agree with your comment. As for the check, you're correct about the stop payment, but I wanted to eliminate risk of an ACH delay or misdirect. Somehow I felt having a check felt more like proof that there was an agreed transaction.
Agreed. They tried to tell me that this was unique to California, but it shouldn't excuse them from disclosing a requirement. Glad to hear your sale went well. thanks for commenting.
