I hand poked a blackout on my forearm, Japanese technique, very little damage to the skin, no heavy scabbing at all, good blackout coverage though not 100% smooth - could do with minor touch ups.

Man I've seen that first one two too many times own my own arm. It's quite the process and in going through it you learn more and more about how to heal heavy black work. I tattoo as well so it showed me a lot about what not to do in situations involving heavy black work applications. I'd say to someone starting out less is more. If it's not going in STOP and wait for the next session. Patchy washed out black is better than hospital visits. Sometimes it's on the client too as pointed out in the video. Bust most of the time it's execution. Thanks remy for another informative video!!!! It's not so easy!

people really underestimate the difficulty of blackwork, i had this area on my elbow joint that scarred up and ditched the ink. i don't know if it was overworked in the session or just traumatized from my arm movements in the following days but yeah. it definitely takes skill to apply it well.

yeah, my very first tat, I bubbled it a little because I washed and lotioned too much. Now, any of my tattoos, first day saniderm, lukewarm shower once a day and bring my gold dial soap in there with me, lotion when I wake up and go to sleep. That's it. Unless it's a hand-tat, in which case, no saniderm. My little chainsaw got infected because I couldn't get the little ditch between my thumb and index to seal.

I have few palm size tattoos and they are like small black works because they're forms filled with solid black ink. And they are A PAIN to do and heal, just because of all the damage your skin receives. 😅 Can't imagine how it is to get a whole sleeve or body like this ✨ i really have respect for you guys 😮

Think I’m going to try your method of just letting the body do it’s thing though. I can tell that one of the fallout is of my own fault from putting lotion on it. It’s my forearm blackout that and it’s so far the biggest tattoo I’ve got. The others have been fine, but much smaller so much less trauma. With the size of this entire forearm blackout I think using the lotion just made me peel off skin too earlier by accident. So I’m going to try out the just wash it and let it be method to see how that works. I go back in a few months for session number 2 and I’m super stoked

I run a shop and have been tattooing professionally for 16 years and we all have our specific aftercare directions. IMO when an infection occurs its arguably the clients improper care, a dirty towel, clothing, bed sheets, a couch, filthy kids, friends poking, pets, a car seat, dirty hands when washing or applying aftercare, work environment, a HUGE mistake is sweating it up by going to the gym stressing the tissues etc etc. Humans are a dirty species, everything is covered in bacteria from our skin to our surroundings, I always stress this to my clients. Every single thing that comes into contact with your big OPEN WOUND must be clean, thankfully 2nd skin for 4-5 days has been a total game changer especially for those clients who dont listen or are simply lazy, ever since using 2nd skin issues have dropped to zero. If your second skin comes off from fluid build up within the first day or two I offer for them to come back and Ill re-clean and reapply, 99% of the time this isnt a problem but it does happen. A small trip back beats a potential big trip to the hospital.
That said there are times when an artist hasnt cleaned the skin thoroughly before during or afterwards and trapped bacteria under the bandage and or definitely over-worked an area and the immune system just cant cope. Chose your artist wisely, dont over do it and listen to directions. Theres always a risk, just take every step possible to minimize it. My 'motherly' 2 cents.

I find the longer you black out in one area the more likely to agitate the skin you are to do. Once that section has taken too much trama you will see it and the person will definitely notice it. Would advise to migrate to a different section and let the other side heal. I do my black outs in stick and poke and can take 4 hrs to do a 2x2 square. it definitely takes a lot of time.

I'm pretty heavily tattooed with some blackout
Since my first tattoo where I used Aloe Vera to keep it moisturised and assist it in healing I've honestly just washed it and never used anything on them
I'm immunosuppressed after a kidney transplant and honestly my body just does better by itself, let it scab up a little and it'll heal itself if you just totally ignore it and keep it clean, never worth risking opening a scab to any extent, making scabs wet with aftercare products can really easily just make the scab weak and fall off at the slightest rub on your clothing
