- Porsche fired the starting shot for Project 917 in June 1968, after the international motor sports authority or FIA had announced a class of "homologated sports cars" with up to five liters cubic capacity and a minimum weight of 800 kilograms. Under the supervision of Ferdinand Piëch, the stipulated 25 units of the new racing car model were completed by April 1969 so that the 917 could begin its racing career in the same year. After it initially dropped out of its first three races due to technical problems, the 917 success story began in August 1969 at a 1,000-kilometer race at the Österreichring with a victory by Jo Siffert and Kurt Ahrens.
The Porsche 917/20 was a mix between the short-tail and the long-tail models and was notable for its broad proportions. Although the pink colored racecar, nicknamed "the Pig", dropped out halfway through the race, its unusual paint color made it one of the most famous Porsche models ever.
so beautiful, Porsche designers truly made a work of art!
one of my favorite Porsches
We love Porsches by their engineering and history!
i know that nowadays they're a little "stoped", but the 918 Spyder is some kinda of future and past, when i say past, is from the Lohner-Porsche "Mixte" Carriage, which was the first hybrid car in the world...
My love with Porsches began when i meet a Porsche 959 in Interlagos-Brazil, and since this, my love by Porsche growed to the entire family...
I wished a Panamera mid-rear engine, Flat-Six like the "Neun Elf"..
how could anyone dislike this??
Ferrari driver .... lol
Just Prius drivers.

Amazing!
Great video, but I missed to see a little of these car in track.
Truffel Jager!
Generating 1500 horse power and reaching speeds of 240 miles per hour down straightaways not a car for the faint of heart, nothing less than a steely nerve pilot with a lot of balls.
Shouldn't have cleaned it after its win.
That would stand out at la man
i saw it in 2007!
the car to its right or left (depends how you look at it) #22 thats the car here!!! it won in 71,, it had fastest recorded average speed at leman ..the record wasnt broken for over 20 years
Tell it like it was: after 1971 the rules changed and the 5 litre maximum was reduced to 3 litres for 1972 and then in 1973, they introduced the so-called Porsche curves, eliminating the very fast but dangerous Maison Blanche section.

Does the Museum @ 0:06 rrrrEally have a big ass LCD-like display covering an entire side like that..( i suspect some MovieMakerMagic here) ?!?!
what is big red box in back side?
Rules-required "luggage-space-compartments". Don't forget, these were "Supposedly" modified road cars built to Group 5 regs of the time, where a certain number had to be built ( 25 at the time , of the 917 series), for them to be classified as racing-versions of the "road" cars. It was a sleight of hand as no real road cars were officially built.....these ended up (actually) as 25 racing examples of Group 6 "racing-only" cars....that did NOT need a minimum build quantity to meet regs. A bit complicated....essentially a way to get to build 5 liter "true-racing" cars instead of being limited to 3 liters as were the Group 6 cars.
I wish i could help you. :D
I wish i understood Lamborghini
I have to say that the Porsche 917 Pink Pig does look like a Pig :)
