  • In 1999 JustPlanes was lucky to spend a week in Libreville Gabon where GABON EXPRESS was filmed including the Hawker Siddley 748 and 10 flights in the cockpit of the SE 210 Caravelle, It holds the distinction of being the world's first jet-powered airliner to be developed for the short/medium-range market and has been out of service for around 15 years! I always considered the Caravelle to be a uniquely graceful machine.

It's pretty amazing that Gabon Express flew these old birds for as long as they did.

No 1 engine seems to be smoking a lot more than the other. Great video. Last of the breed.

Could be different models of the engine. For example the J79 had versions that smoked and after a while smokeless versions. It was not uncommon for F-4s to have both types installed in the same plane. IMHO a vintage turbojet should smoke like this! I wonder if it is still flying as it would be great to see one in the air!

The VC10 and the Caravelle : definitely my favorite airliners (and the Concorde off course). Today's planes are fat and ugly.

Love the speed breaks at :06 and the nose cockpit :20 look from outside. Sort of reminds me of de Havilland Comet nose. The newer aircraft like 787 and Airbus A220 / Bombardier CSeries seem to be following these lines/shape again. Plus could we have the teardrop windows of the 210 Caravelle in a new aircraft once again? So unique! Truly French in design.

The nose section including the cockpit was indeed taken from the Comet. Only slight changes were made.
