So much to observe in this scene, especially if you're watching season 2. - Coach Beard smirking from inside the office, 100% on board with Ted's coaching. - Roy Kent sitting silently at the end of the bench with a look of what could be respect for Ted, but could just as easily be him enjoying hearing Jaime torn a new one. - Isaac jumping ahead of Jaime's bad attitude and separating him and Colin, likely one of the moments Roy remembers as a reason to pick him as Captain. - Nate really admiring Ted's demeanor and using some of that aggression when he stands up for himself at the restaurant.
Also I think Jamie’s reaction has a lot to do with how his dad talks to him. Since Jamie became the star I bet no one has talked like to him besides his own father, and having usually calm and cool Ted go off. Def struck a cord with him. I think Nate also used that little bit of aggression in cutting Jaime down to size as his spring board for insulting the team later on during the pre game talk.
Another moment is while they're watching The Iron Giant and Isaac had a team member put the phone down, and other when he made a spot for Nate to sit. Rewatching this show has SO many good moments.

That's Winchester and you can see in multiple scenes that whenever there's tension, he usually tries to appear as invisible as possible, subtle, but a great addition to the scenes which make it feel much more real
Love this scene. So powerful, only time Ted raises his voice at someone. Also the small details like the Dutch tilt camera angle when Ted proper lays into him. Masterful!
What I love about Ted coming back after "It's just practice" is not only was he dealing with Jamie's shit attitude, he was gaining the respect of the team at-large. If Ted let that comment slide, he would have lost any power and authority with the others. Ted's response not only humiliated and backfired on Jamie, but it made the other players realize that just because Ted doesn't know the first thing about soccer, he wouldn't tolerate any bullshit.
The cinematography really adds a lot to this scene when they switch to the angled shot. The way the intensity in Ted matches the tilted angle in those shots adds a subtle layer of depth that highlights the skill put in to this show. Nice

I always like it when the nice guy/dad gets fed up and finally put his foot down. This was coming from not only a coach but as a responsible father. Also the fact that we see Roy smirking made it funnier because Jamie deserved it.
So many aspects of this scene are truly fabulous. Allen Iverson's infamous rant expressed his frustration about missing practice during a period of grieving for a friend who was recently killed. And Iverson conveyed his emotion in a joking manner. Here, Jason Sudeikis interprets the source material and escalates the emotion considerably towards Jamie. Ted berates Jamie in front of the team in part to show who is in charge. Finally at @1:37, the conflict is presented in a Spike Lee angled shot, visually communicating the askew state of Ted and Jamie's relationship. This is high level stuff for a sports comedy-drama.

He was that team for years and years and years and Larry Brown NEVER appreciated that and the biggest failure of Brown was nitpicking Iverson for every little thing instead of encouraging him and giving him the credit he deserved. I really can't stress how much I love the moment at 1:49 when Ted realizes what he's doing and tries to bring himself back down to normal. He is controlling his volume and trying to maintain himself but still raises his voice again when questioned because he's not actually calm, but can't bring himself to keep laying into Jaime despite how angry he is
This is, to this date, my favorite scene from Season 1 of Ted Lasso. I've coached various youth/teen leagues, and I would have LOVE to have had this conversation with some of the kids that I've coached...those that only want to be there for themselves, show up when they want to show up, etc. Absolutely LOVE this scene, and what it truly means.

He included this rant as a tribute to AI, not to make fun of him.

That little tilt is so perfect, just conveys so much. I love how uncomfortable Jamie seems to look in that position, right as he realizes that he’s completely in the wrong for faking the injury. Jamie had always shown a distaste for the Lasso Way, but in that moment he knows that Ted is completely right about skipping practice.
Reminds me a lot of the scene in _Die Hard_ when Bruce Willis and Alan Rickman first meet each other in person on the rooftop and there’re a bunch of Dutch angles while they’re talking to show that something isn’t right before the big reveal to Willis that Rickman is in fact Hans Gruber

okay but Jamie's look at 1:48 hits a lot harder once you find out about his abusive father. Probably having flashbacks to all the times he's been yelled at or worse from his arse of a ddad. I don't disagree that he was a little wanker in season 1, but I started loving him more and more in season 2 and season 3 he was my favorite character in the whole thing.
Can we also talk about Jamie's reaction the moment Ted started shouting in his face? With the context of S2 (and the last episode of S1) you can see how triggering this moment actually is by the way Jamie starts disassociating, his twitching legs etc. Like the shouting probably brought up a lot bad memories. Not that Ted was in the wrong or anything, but i just find it interesting to find so many signs looking back. The actor did a great job with the nuance.
I recently noticed this parallel while rewatching some scenes and it definitely makes the scene more depressing than funny. I don’t think Ted was in the wrong either but I can’t help but wonder if he regretted the way he handled the situation when he walks by the window and sees Jamie’s dad yelling at him while Jamie just sits there disassociating just like he does in this scene.
I was on the fence watching the first few episodes of "Ted Lasso." After watching this scene, I fell in love with this show. This ranks right up there with some of the greatest all time TV scenes. Jason pulled this scene off flawlessly.
One of my favorite scenes in this show. As soon as Jamie said "Relax Ted. It's just practice", I knew they were going to spoof the AI "Practice" rant. This show is the best. I love Phil's face at 1:19. It looks like he's clearly trying not to laugh.
Fucking fantastic scene. I was otherwise not a fan of this episode's obsession with semantic satiation, but they just nailed it here, and it's a brilliant repurposing of Allen Iverson's speech. The Dutch angle is a nice touch too, plus Jamie obviously being reminded of his dad and squirming in his seat. When you're raised with a dad like Jamie's it can be hard to tell the difference between accountability and punishment.
I don't know the Iverson rant but this reminds me of two things; my dad always says "Practice like you play and play like you practice" and the other is something my mom always says "Nice and Stupid don't always go together." Just because Ted has been nice and giving Jamie a lot of chances doesn't mean Ted doesn't see what he is doing. Ted's whole coaching style is about building the team; creating trust and respect. The fact that Jamie pulled an " cough, cough I'm sick" is the biggest slap in the face. He basically told Ted that he could be doing better things.
No joke, I linked this scene to someone after I started watching the show... someone that didn't even know about the show... and they binged watched the entire thing in like four days. I had to, like, fend them off from spoiling later episodes for me!
Always loved the use of camerawork in this scene to make sure Jamie and Ted were always level. Ted wasn’t talking down or standing over him, he was looking straight on man to man.
1:36 always gets me it's the "Dutch angle" used to show a shift in balance or the status quo in a character. It's meant to be unnerving like this character is in crisis or on the edge. During a moment, Ted is just close to losing it. Brilliant editing and dialogue.
The camera angles at 1:36 and 1:42 are very jarring compared to the rest of the cinematography. But I think that they are used as a point. That even though Ted is the coach and standing, and Jamie the player and sitting, Ted is still giving him the benefit of talking to him person to person. Their heads are almost level given the angle.
Yes, Jason said that in an interview. They wanted to use different camera angles to show a different preceptive of Ted as this was out of his normal character so they used "out of character" camera angles.
Superb writting, superb actors. As someone who rolls his eyes when a football match is up in real life and television, this show kept the entirety of my attention from start to finish.
This is great. I knew he was referencing the Iverson practice rant, but I didn't know he repeated it verbatim until I looked up the clip to refresh my memory.
I really like the dutch angle shot of Ted and Jamie, it really showed how Ted having to talk down on Jamie, showing how low Jamie actually is, even if he has the skills and talent, his ego is just letting him down/low whilst Ted has the higherground, making a point acriss, showing what a leader and a coach is, grounding Jamie about practice.
As far as I can remember this is the only scene in the show where Ted shouts at one of his players (not counting when he becomes the alternate angry Ted)
What really makes that scene is that Ted combines the Iverson "practice" riff with the mannerisms, facial expression and head nodding of Jim Mora's "playoffs" rant.
In what I think is a nice bit of acting by Phil Dunster (and some foreshadowing from the writers), you can see Jamie kind of go into a bit of a shell when Ted starts really yelling. Even before we know anything about his father you can see the effect he's had on Jamie. To someone with his trauma, an authority figure screaming would probably trigger his fears. His acting was really underrated throughout the series and I hope he gets some awards for S3.
When an easy spoken person starts loudly going off like this to speak on and reinforce on an undeniable basic idea and principle, people need to listen really closely because something has hit a threshold and enlightenment need to be dealt out. Also known as "an opportunity for improvement".
@@alexcorona It’s not JUST about the Iverson rant and it’s not just satire. Sudeikis is making a real point by repurposing the rant. He acknowledges Iverson, slips an inside joke to roundball fans, and makes it a powerful leadership moment for Lasso.
You can tell this is the moment a lot of the players started to respect Ted a lot more. The way they shaped up in attitude, especially Isaac, and started taking him and the team far more seriously really shows it. Especially when Jaime, in his humiliation and anger, lashes out at his teammates and they don’t take any of it.
The genius of this scene is the rant makes sense out of context, but with the context of the Iverson rant, you can totally buy Ted would watch that video over and over again, and has been waiting to use it verbatim on a player.
The fact that this show was spawn from a commercial for the champions league being shown in America is ridiculous when you see how good this show is. Its like if they made a show about the mayhem guy and it won an emmy.

okay but Jamie's look at 1:48 hits a lot harder once you find out about his abusive father. Probably having flashbacks to all the times he's been yelled at or worse from his arse of a ddad. I don't disagree that he was a little wanker in season 1, but I started loving him more and more in season 2 and season 3 he was my favorite character in the whole thing.

Can we also talk about Jamie's reaction the moment Ted started shouting in his face? With the context of S2 (and the last episode of S1) you can see how triggering this moment actually is by the way Jamie starts disassociating, his twitching legs etc. Like the shouting probably brought up a lot bad memories. Not that Ted was in the wrong or anything, but i just find it interesting to find so many signs looking back. The actor did a great job with the nuance.
I recently noticed this parallel while rewatching some scenes and it definitely makes the scene more depressing than funny. I don’t think Ted was in the wrong either but I can’t help but wonder if he regretted the way he handled the situation when he walks by the window and sees Jamie’s dad yelling at him while Jamie just sits there disassociating just like he does in this scene.

I was on the fence watching the first few episodes of "Ted Lasso." After watching this scene, I fell in love with this show. This ranks right up there with some of the greatest all time TV scenes. Jason pulled this scene off flawlessly.
One of my favorite scenes in this show. As soon as Jamie said "Relax Ted. It's just practice", I knew they were going to spoof the AI "Practice" rant. This show is the best. I love Phil's face at 1:19. It looks like he's clearly trying not to laugh.

I love watching this scene and then the clip of Roy hugging Jamie it’s amazing the character development on a goofy wholesome comedy series.

Fucking fantastic scene. I was otherwise not a fan of this episode's obsession with semantic satiation, but they just nailed it here, and it's a brilliant repurposing of Allen Iverson's speech. The Dutch angle is a nice touch too, plus Jamie obviously being reminded of his dad and squirming in his seat. When you're raised with a dad like Jamie's it can be hard to tell the difference between accountability and punishment.
I love the dude who's like "damn, I forgot to call my mom. Let me go do that before I forget again."
I don't know the Iverson rant but this reminds me of two things; my dad always says "Practice like you play and play like you practice" and the other is something my mom always says "Nice and Stupid don't always go together." Just because Ted has been nice and giving Jamie a lot of chances doesn't mean Ted doesn't see what he is doing. Ted's whole coaching style is about building the team; creating trust and respect. The fact that Jamie pulled an " cough, cough I'm sick" is the biggest slap in the face. He basically told Ted that he could be doing better things.
His character development in this is some of the best I've ever seen on tv!
I love beard sitting in the background smiling away. He knows this is a huge moment for jamie and the rest of the team putting jamie in his place.
No joke, I linked this scene to someone after I started watching the show... someone that didn't even know about the show... and they binged watched the entire thing in like four days. I had to, like, fend them off from spoiling later episodes for me!
Always loved the use of camerawork in this scene to make sure Jamie and Ted were always level. Ted wasn’t talking down or standing over him, he was looking straight on man to man.
Coach beard in the background grinning is perfection. He knows whats happening here and loves it
Also love the play on how many times he says it and it plays with the “semantic satiation” talked about between Beard and Ted.

1:36 always gets me it's the "Dutch angle" used to show a shift in balance or the status quo in a character. It's meant to be unnerving like this character is in crisis or on the edge. During a moment, Ted is just close to losing it. Brilliant editing and dialogue.

The Jamie Tartt evolution is spectacular.
The camera angles at 1:36 and 1:42 are very jarring compared to the rest of the cinematography. But I think that they are used as a point. That even though Ted is the coach and standing, and Jamie the player and sitting, Ted is still giving him the benefit of talking to him person to person. Their heads are almost level given the angle.
Yes, Jason said that in an interview. They wanted to use different camera angles to show a different preceptive of Ted as this was out of his normal character so they used "out of character" camera angles.

Superb writting, superb actors. As someone who rolls his eyes when a football match is up in real life and television, this show kept the entirety of my attention from start to finish.

I really like the dutch angle shot of Ted and Jamie, it really showed how Ted having to talk down on Jamie, showing how low Jamie actually is, even if he has the skills and talent, his ego is just letting him down/low whilst Ted has the higherground, making a point acriss, showing what a leader and a coach is, grounding Jamie about practice.
1:31 think this is the moment Roy realised Ted is a real real coach, not a football coach but still a real coach
At 2:28 the three players talking to Jamie are the epitome of "Imma head out now", but everybody in the locker room knows Jamie went to far this time
As far as I can remember this is the only scene in the show where Ted shouts at one of his players (not counting when he becomes the alternate angry Ted)

What really makes that scene is that Ted combines the Iverson "practice" riff with the mannerisms, facial expression and head nodding of Jim Mora's "playoffs" rant.
In what I think is a nice bit of acting by Phil Dunster (and some foreshadowing from the writers), you can see Jamie kind of go into a bit of a shell when Ted starts really yelling. Even before we know anything about his father you can see the effect he's had on Jamie. To someone with his trauma, an authority figure screaming would probably trigger his fears.
His acting was really underrated throughout the series and I hope he gets some awards for S3.
Problem is, at this momen Ted isn´t really a authority figure, he doesn´t have the standing yet.

You can tell this is the moment a lot of the players started to respect Ted a lot more. The way they shaped up in attitude, especially Isaac, and started taking him and the team far more seriously really shows it. Especially when Jaime, in his humiliation and anger, lashes out at his teammates and they don’t take any of it.

The genius of this scene is the rant makes sense out of context, but with the context of the Iverson rant, you can totally buy Ted would watch that video over and over again, and has been waiting to use it verbatim on a player.
After watching the AI conference and now this I now don't think the word "practice" sounds like a word anymore.
