    Howard Cosell was a pioneering broadcaster in so many ways. He was the first one that told it like it was or at least the way he saw it. Before then sports broadcasters would rarely voice their honest opinions because they wanted to maintain good relationships with the athletes. He was the first one to ask the athletes tough questions prior to that all the questions were very safe. He set the tone for much of what has brought sports broadcasting has become today. In addition he was the greatest boxing broadcaster of all time.

    Never be another one like him. I know his favorite saying was " I'm just telling it like it is". No one could win a argument with Howard. Who could ever forget the friendship between him and Ali. Solid American citizen. Thanks for your service Howard.

    You MISSED the entire Cosell/M. Ali exchanges all through the SIXTIES???? Man, wow, just wow. Those exchanges made BOTH of their media careers. There's never been a "tete-a-tete" like that in sports before or since.

    His Odd Couple episode was epic. A rundown of Cosell's career is incredibly incomplete without his switch on boxing, he came out in the 1980s as being opposed to boxing. This was a very big story at the time.

    • @shackdaddy7106
      @shackdaddy7106 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don’t think he was opposed to boxing as much as he was the quality of matches that he called in the early 80s.Or maybe like me he lost his interest in boxing when Muhammad Ali retired.

    Worked at ABC when Howard was there- He was treated better than the President! Smoked his stogies casually at all times-Even in the elevator- always seemed bigger than life. It was obvious he always missed his wife and I recall him talking about her at times on his broadcasts. Guess he just wanted to be with her all along as they say Forever and never shook out of his grief. Not a bad man as some portrayed just a "tell it like it is" guy and way ahead of his time with that in very conservative business times. MISS HIM all the time on MNF and in NFL broadcasts in general. The tribute to a man's life is YOU are still thought about fondly after all these years still and caused me to come here and let you know that.

    He was too obsessed with Ali. It was all Ali all the time. He compared every other fighter to Ali.
    A journalist should not be that close to any one athlete and Ali had faults and issues that the press ignored. Like his racist rants toward Frazier which was almost encouraged by the press and his womanizing like when he showed up in Manila with a woman other than his wife.

      @@thedwightguy Absolutely correct. Both may be accepted. HOWEVER, one will be the preferred pronunciation, the other will be acceptable, but not the preferred pronunciation. Much like the word preferable. Pref-ra-bull is the first choice, even though many still say prefer-a-bull, if this makes sense......

    He managed to offend a lot of people. Henry Ford III called ABC’s Roone Arledge during a Monday night game and told him to “get that SOB off the air!” Despite it all I personally miss him because he somehow made a lackluster event more interesting. There won’t be another announcer like Howard. The networks wouldn’t have the guts to hire him now.

    I liked Cosell fine. But then he supported Al Davis moving the raiders to la. He was always against franchises moving to other cities but it was ok for Al Davis? I lost respect for him when he wrote I never played the game.
    He was an outrageous show off. He demanded his presence be felt wherever he was. He could be cruel to people he worked with and I'm talking about other people not just Frank Gifford.
    Yes he was great in sports journalism. But you just can't talk about that and not talk about his other side.

    In 1974 John Lennon joined him briefly in the broadcast booth during a Monday night football game. Ironically Howard Cosell had announced on MNF December 8, 1980 that John Lennon had been asinated. Kinda creepy huh?
