I agree and understand why it's complicated/difficult to provide pricing online. However, as a current bride, I think it would be helpful for vendors to at least provide a typical range or minimum price. I feel terrible contacting vendors wasting their time just to find out in one email that they're completely out of my budget and then having to tell people over and over that I can't afford their services. Working full time, I don't have time for dozens of intro calls and meetings with vendors that won't pan out purely based on budget. At the same time there are vendors I haven't bothered to reach out to just assuming they will be out of reach financially. With the increase in online commerce culture, there has to be a happy medium. Most couples can understand that a price isn't guaranteed without a formal quote but at least both sides can save time by being transparent about price range during the research stage.

While I do agree generally with this video there’s also a lot of information out there about the ‘wedding tax’ and how vendors will use the fact that you don’t know a lot about the industry to charge you extra. Part of how they do that is by not displaying prices so you can’t compare. This isn’t all vendors but it’s a part of the industry

  • @marjanismith6978

Thanks for another great video! I can appreciate why vendors feel the need to not disclose all of their pricing. On the flip side, it makes it a little difficult for potential customers like me because I like to at least know where the starting range for services begins before I even schedule a meeting. That's why I appreciate those that fill in the pricing range/popular price section on weddingwire because there's no worse feeling than sitting down with someone and realizing that their services begin at a range that is sky high over your budget. I don't need a detailed price list but I just want to know that when I make someone set time out of their day to meet with me, I won't waste their time.

Oh wow, this really relates to me. I’m a ceremony musician, and I used to quote around the same amount because 90% of weddings asked for approximately the same amount of prep/practice/rehearsal and were usually near my city. But then I had a wedding that, long story short, asked me to go above and beyondddddd what I normally do, and this only became clear long after they booked me. I didn’t want to go back on what I quoted, so I absorbed the hit to my time/energy/finances. Now, I make sure to know exactly what’s being requested before I provide a quote. Awesome video, Jamie!!

As frustrating as it is, I totally understand. I work in a granny flat display and I'm specifically told NOT to give out anything except the base price because the actual cost is so reliant on someone specific block and needs. Yet even then, I still get people that ignore the words "starting from" and get angry at me or our sales reps when their quote isn't the same as the base price.

Omg that’s so insane how you read my mind. I made a list yesterday of all the expenses and how much they could POSSIBLY cost so that I can add it up and make my potential budget. I was looking for vendors like photographers and dessert tables. I would message them on Facebook and refuse to tell me their prices. They tell me they want to meet with me in person. I don’t want to waste my time meeting with a person if they are ridiculously expensive when I could be meeting up with other vendors. Time is money, but I get it now! Love you and your videos!

@@JamieWolfer there really is! So many hours go into each wedding before the wedding even happens for the vendor. I think sometimes people forget that it's not just the day/night of the wedding that consists of work for the vendors. There's a ton of preparation (and sometimes stress) as well. Prime example... My band gets booked for an out of state wedding. We will need to pay for driving time and gas, plus hotel rooms. Then the hours for load in, performing, and then breakdown. And most of the time, the bride and groom will wait until maybe 2 weeks before the wedding to give us a list of like 23 specific songs that we MUST sing. Uhhh ok. Now I have, well, a VERY small amount of time on top of other events and my regular schedule to learn 23 songs. That's a lot of prep hours!

This is all so incredibly true. My prices are different for San Diego vs Orange County vs Manhattan. I can't just list them online. I also like to know guest count (if they have 300 guests, I need a 3rd shooter), how much time they want, etc. in order to send the most accurate pricing. Above all, I do give starting prices in the initial email to ensure nobody's time is wasted (even though some people seem to ignore than and spend an hour call with me only to say I'm out of budget...totally not fun). I also think sometimes personality, how well you click, etc. is almost as important as price and I wouldn't have that phone call if I just sent over vague pricing immediately. It's so important to verbally connect to ensure both parties are a great fit for each other :)

I'd love to see a video on your thoughts/ideas/tips about multiple wedding events. What I mean is, for example in my case, my fiance is Irish and I'm Australian and so we're planning to have our main wedding in Ireland (ceremony and reception) but as not all of my Australian family and friends will be able to attend, we are thinking of having another wedding reception/party in Aus after to celebrate with those who couldn't make it. I know this is becoming more common with people of different religions, destination weddings etc too so think it could be helpful for lots of people. Would love to know your thoughts on how to go about this, do we send separate invitations, do we invite everyone to both, would it be best to have them close together in time or separate by 6 months or so and so on... Just an idea :) loving your videos!

Hi, just thought I'd pitch in with my current plans: similar situation (Denmark and Brazil in our case), and we're doing them one week apart (which people have called crazy for) but too late, invitations are out! We made a single invitation, but we know that most people will only attend one due to geography/financial limitations. We should have between 50-70 guests in each (unless too many people confirm, in which case we might have a tiny problem heheh). But in our case, it's more logical to do this as many of our guests are not in either country, and there are some people who are in one of them but would love the excuse to travel to the others. Our parents are so far the only people we know that are doing both.

First I want to say thank you! Your videos are so helpful. Second, is it inappropriate or rude for me to ask venues if they have some type of discount for teachers? I saw a few venues in my area offer small discounts or even add two free early hours to venue time and just wondered if that would be okay to ask about or if that’s too much to ask of a venue.

Interesting how things are different in my province. Most photographers list their packages on their website. There are numerous floweriest with pricing on their websites, catering companies list their prices for different packages, venues list prices based on size of party, many can bundle an officiant, floweriest, wedding planning/cordinator, photographer catering, and corkage fee, even horse drawn carriages, hair and make-up their websites are updates based on inflation and availability.
When I booked professional movers their prices were online for an estimate: charge by weight, distance and amount of manual labour time. While they give estimates on their websites, the bill is based on this listed above.
I recently booked my tables, chairs, and catering service ware, did it all online, price is based on days needing it, could have gotten delivery but since it is 2 hours out of town it would have cost $400 extra plus fuel surcharge, yes they listed added prices for delivering out of town and which towns they deliver to.
I avoid the service people who don't list their prices online, as they tend to me the ones with hidden fees and a good sign they are not professionals and/or their prices are sky high compared to their competitors.

These videos are very informative, and I can appreciate the rationale behind why things are the way they are. I can even appreciate that a 300 person person, elegant style affair usually requires more than a 50 person diy affair. Admittedly though, this also make me wonder whether having a traditional wedding is even worth it (I'm not even close yet, just doing research for budgetary understanding). There's so much financial ambiguity that a cookie cutter elopement at like a vegas drive through shop sounds impersonal, but much better financially. No wonder brides get so stressed. It feels a lot like trying to shop for a car and dealing with car salespeople.

It’s a COMPLETELY different service, therefore has different pricing. I have so much more equipment I need to do a wedding. Plus, I’d consider that a breach of contract and just leave. And I can’t help the bride before the wedding if they lie to me. I help walk them through photography related decisions and figuring out what will work best for them. Also, 95% of the time I’m the one who builds a timeline for them, and if they didn’t have someone who knows what their doing help with that it’s almost guaranteed to be a mess. Yup.... I’d just leave. Jamie, if you’d like a more in-depth breakdown on how these services are different from a photography perspective for your video, please let me know. I’d totally send you an email or something. No shout out needed, this rumor just needs to be squashed, and people need to be educated.

I don’t get it, why would you want to lie? I would feel so bad lying that it’s for a different event when it’s actually for my wedding just to save a few bucks. That’s why people have a budget, you get what you pay for, what you can afford.

@@ashton8878 just to save a few bucks. No from what i hear the difference is big. And from everything from the florist, the venue, the caterer, the party rental supplies they all charge you much more once they hear the word wedding. So yeah you bet i would lie.
