In John Krasinski's new movie A Quiet Place, those who have survived only know one rule: never make a sound. In this special episode of Things You Missed, I'll be taking cover from the creatures who prey on sound as I try to fill you in on all of the Things You Missed in A Quiet Place (2018).
I'll also be talking about the science of sound and how the characters took measures to protect themselves from the monsters in ways you might not have even realized. Then, on top of that I'll be going over Things You Missed that answer some of the biggest questions in the movie, such as:

❓ What was the weakness of the creatures?
❓ Why do they kill?
❓ Where do they come from?

CZsWorld my good sir you were actually right i saw an article that explains the monsters origin and I give u an applause you were right they come from outer space and they even mentioned that they dont have eyes because they hunt by following sound
I honestly believe it was only 3. They move fast and they tend to be spread out more which they never attacked as a group. Right at the end of the movie after killing one (finally) the last 2 charged into the house. I feel its 3 in a group in each country or state.

The red lights don't affect the monsters at all... they're a warning to the rest of the family to let them know one is on the land/in the house.

I think the buzz had a small impact, just not as much as the hearing aid. It did seem to give them a little but of leeway with making small sounds.

Theres no power plants. In the scene where Lee is laying out sand, you can see solar panels on the roof. That’s whats giving them electricity.

I like how they marked the areas on the floors that don't creak when you step on them. I imagine the trial and error for that was terrifying though

I think the fire is a natural sound along with a water or river gushing. We see one example where the kids knock over the later but yet the monster doesn’t com running in. I think the monster perceives it at a natural sound.

The monsters by that time had gotten used to the sounds of the already-existing river & waterfall. But this was a new water sound that hadn't been there before. Just a guess.

Nobody mentioned how when the aliens are *around* the electrical fixtures like light bulbs and tv screens get momentarily disrupted.
Good catch man, i noticed it as well. I watched with my sister, who i admit is highly intelligent. However, she missed a lot of stuff that i caught right off....stuff i thought was obvious and crucial to understand what was happening throughout the movie. Overall, this was as good a movie as ive seen in a while. Outstanding in fact!

The red lights bothering the creatures is a big stretch. John Krasinski even said they’re just used as a communication device
based on the fact that they don't eat the things they kill they might be just really territorial herbivores, imagine the hunters...
Good theory. But I doubt they’re herbivores because of their teeth. From what we see they have sharp teeth to eat flesh with. Herbivores usually have flat teeth to eat plants with. Still we don’t get to know what their eating habits are in the movie and why they do attack sound. But I like thinking of them as animal behavioural alien creatures more than intelligent lifefroms similar to humans. And that they might just indeed be very protective territorial creatures.
But of course we can’t know for sure
@@thepieisalieofficial Except that have you ever seen the skull of an adult gorilla?? Those herbivore "teeth" include 6-inch long tusks that could easily kill you. But they do not eat meat, not of any kind, ever. Sure wouldn't assume that based on their dentition, which has "killer" written all over it! Still, the kind of teeth these creatures have do not suggest even the idea of a plant-based diet. Who knows what they ate on their home planet? Maybe they had very aggressive plants!
They kill because they need to keep their environment quiet to survive, thats why they get hurt by the crazy high pitch sounds from the little girls earpiece

It's not really a theory. It's just a detail. The red lights made that humming noise - begining of movie the only thing destroyed in the town was the traffic light.

I agree with you too.... The red bulbs were to warn the husband that she's in danger and the monster is at the house,so they too can be careful.
The aliens don't seem to be attracted to naturally occurring noises (wind, trees, running water). The only things they seem attracted to are anomalies ( crashes, chatter, etc. ). As well very light sounds don't garner attention, such as the pitter patter of feet or breathing.
They probably know what’s a natural noise and what isn’t so they attack the not natural noises instead
Well think about how they’d attack a river. They probably heard it, examined it, and realized it was nothing they could eat or attack. Also, the river is a long stretch that’s constant noise, they’ve probably lost interest in the sound of the river and waterfall.
They actually seem to be able to distinguish natural sounds from sounds created by animals or humans. There's a scene towards the beginning where a raccoon is walking around making raccoon noises, not very loud at all, and it gets smashed by one of them

I thought that maybe at first the monsters attacked the fire cause it made a noise but when they realised that they can’t get anything from it they learnt to recognise to leave it alone because it was useless to them. I think that’s also why they don’t go to the waterfall because they know that they can’t get anything from it.
As for methods of reducing noise, notice that when they eat meals they do not use hard plates or utensils. They were eating food off of soft cloth and using their hands. One thing my wife noticed was at the beginning in the store, lots of the shelves were wiped out and empty, but one thing that was not wiped out was the potato chips. Chips are noisy to open and eat.

The fire: I assumed that the creatures are smart enough to tell the difference between human sounds and other sounds. The creatures weren't constantly trying to attack the waterfall, for example. The know that leaves rustling aren't worth getting excited about. Or babbling brooks, or crickets, or thunder. They're listening for people and animals. Fire is a natural sound. On the other hand, if these creatures are sentient, they should be suspicious of the sound of fires springing up every night in the same locations. Which should suggest that they're just dumb animals. They're instinctual, not intelligent. Fire is a natural sound, so they ignore it, even though anything with half a brain would quickly realize the fires were controlled fires being set by humans.

There blind so I would assume that they would not know what fire WAS just the sound of fire, and if they came from somewere else like another planet then they would assume that the fire is natural and is just a normal part of human life.
Which is also why i dont think these things are the invading force but merely a weapon of the true invading force.
I don’t think that the red lights are meant as a defence system, they’re more of a warning to passers by or their family that there may be monsters around. The monsters in the movie don’t seem to be affected at all by the red lights hung up at the farm. Because the traffic light is knocked down, I don’t think it was purposeful, as you can see, later on in the film (if you’ve watched it) she sets off the timer as a distraction for the monster in her basement so she can run. The monster juts seems to swipe everything in its path, not just go directly for the noise. The monsters seem to be quite inaccurate to where they aim and just move everything’s in their path. This is probably just a coincidence that they’re both red lights, but good thinking.

I just finished commenting something similar to that, haha. A lot of people keep saying that there were multiple, yet I think it was the other two in the area and when they passed the first camera's range, then you could see them on the next camera's screen.

The father had confirmed there were 3 in the area from his notes, probably from catching them on video feed in separate places. Certainly there could have been more, and what was to stop some from other areas eventually making their way to the Abotts farm?
The daughter wasn't using a simple hearing aid, she was using a cochlear implant, a far more sophisticated device that can allow deaf people to hear.

I may disagree with your hearing aid feedback explanation. I think the feedback comes from the electromagnetic waves that the monsters naturally emit. If you look, when the monsters came close to the outdoor lights, they began to flicker, I think it was because of their natural EM light emission. I think this same EM interference is what caused the hearing aids to make the white noise.
Also, when the monster died at the end, all of its buddies came rushing. Yes, the shotgun blast was loud, but that's not what seemed to call their attention. I think the monster used electromagnetic telepathy to call his comrades.

The red lights were to let everyone know that the creatures are in the area/ that she was in labour. how else would the dad have known to send the kid, to set the fireworks off, to distract the creatures. The fireworks were set up as a distraction for when the birth happened, as she would need to screem. I mean there is a chance that the birth was planned to happen at the waterfall but the fireworks seem like a smarter option. As it draws the creatures away from the area.
I really like your theory , my opinion is that the fireworks were planned for the child's birth but the red lights only ment danger. So the dad decided to send the kid to light the fireworks so it was a distraction to get her out , but when he went to get her discovered that she was also in labour and had the baby
I like the theory that the waterfall is probably where she planned on giving birth! I wasn’t paying too much attention to how many days past after we get a glimpse of the calendar, but I am pretty sure the baby came early. The fireworks were probably a plan B
However, having given birth, I know it’s not pleasant to walk immediately afterwards. So maybe the waterfall would have been impractical in that sense? I still like the idea the beat though

I think they might be amphibious. During the scene where the basement floods, it immediately goes underwater, as if by instinct. It also has fins on its arms, which may help it swim. It might be a dumb theory because I’m not sure how that would work with the hearing.
well many animals on earth use an acute sense of hearing as their primary sense - take whales for example, they use sound for communication. could be that they do a very similar thing

It's a good theory.And the sound part actually helps it. They wanted to avoid sound,that's why they killed anything that made noise. It wasn't purely for hunting. And being underwater does dampen the noise levels...

When the dad yelled at the end he should have thrown the axe away to make noise instead of sacrificing himself which didn’t make sense
Brendan - Yeah I thought it was a poor excuse on the filmmakers part to sacrifice the dad for a sad, heroic finale. I think they could’ve done it in a better way. I enjoyed the film though.
The problem is that the axe rattle would not prolong the noise. The aliens would be turned off to it in a second after the crash. Dad knew he had to keep the noise going to attract the aliens to it.
He already appeared to be stabbed through the stomach anyways, He probably knew he was going to bleed out or die of another reason so he decided to sacrifice himself.
He probably didn’t want to bank on his throwing ability when he had just been stabbed in the stomach.
I feel the alien wouldn't have gone after it, It knew there was something inside the truck and probably didn't feel like it should go after an insignificant noise behind it. But the screaming for sure let it knew there was something right there behind it.

idunno, maybe quieter noises like that get kinda like watered down by the sound of the wind and overall environment
Like the dude said, a sharp noise, like a picture frame crashing on the floor, is much louder and a lot more distinct than a heartbeat muffled by bone and muscle from behind the constant noise of falling water.
True but when they get close and try to focus their hearing they pick up lots of environmental noises and water in the distance, and all the bugs in the field. Good thinking though

Same noise gets drowned out by bigger noise. A good example would be at night when it's not so loud you can hear more clearly try this in your own home when you go to bed no mater where you live when you go to lay down just lay there and listen you'll hear your sounds you didn't hear during the day. This happens cause most people are going to sleep and sounds like cars and people going about there days all winds down late at night and the quitter it is the more sounds no is amplified so during the day mostly it's windy people are making lots of noise sound gets drowned out in this case in the movie it's just them but there always something more noise then there heartbeats.
The hearing aids worked because of the electro-magnetic frequencies, not because of the noise. Hearing aids don't produce sound. We can see how electro-magnetic frequencies affect the monsters ehen the lughts flicker when they are near.

The red lights are a silent alarm. It means a creature is inside their territory. It means to be on high alert.
She killed one creature at the end, and you see two running on the monitor. The father was right, there is three in the area.
My guess is the other two came and the mother and daughter used their gun and hearing aid to kill the remaining two in the area. They then reached out to other survivors to tell them what the creatures weakness was. I imagine a good ending beyond the ending we seen.

Eddie Cardwell no the lights were not a monster warning. They were a warning for her family that she was going into labor. Once her family saw the red lights, they knew that they needed to make as much noise as possible. The rockets were set up as a one time thing made for when she gave birth. Plus, she went down to the office place to turn on the red lights before she attracted the monsters.
The whole joke of the movie is that if it hears something at a distance itd hear very low noises, to where in the cornfield it would easily hear their breathing and heartbeat. Sit in an absolutely silent room and you can very clearly hear your own organs working. The creatures hear something so quiet that we could only hear it from around 20-30 feet but they are hundreds of feet away. Decibels are exponential so itd be all but inaudible at that range but they hear it.

Thats the whole deal. Ambient noise would be louder than dropping a plate at 50 yards. Your breathing from a few feet away from the monster would be louder than someone talking 100 feet away. So them coming running because a raccoon was wandering outside would mean it had to be really close to the building thus would hear them moving, breathing, heartbeat. Even electricity has ambient noise so of they just listened to electricity they could find the family. (Yes we humans can clearly hear power lines, lights, etc even through wind and storms to where if power goes out we can detect that) so super hearing monster should hear everything. They just filmed it this way to try to be tense. Previously monsters attacked as soon as it heard something whereas in close proximity to the family the monster just stood around a while. When the son died the dad had been running on the sand which definitely isn't quiet so the monster presumably would have killed them both. I like how this movie was filmed but it was very poorly thought out.

When I went to see the movie, of course there was a group of stupid teens laughing and snickering when the mom was in labor with the damn nail in her foot. It was SO FRUSTRATING. Like what the hell is so funny about that situation? I feel like every time I go to the movie theatre to see a scary movie there is always some group of stupid teens making noise. Anyway. I loved this movie. I may have even shed a single tear he sacrificed himself. I just wish it could’ve been longer.

If I remember correctly they still came to the house after the lights turned red, and she also did it right after her water broke, so it could've been a sign of danger, the baby coming, or both since babies tend to make a lot of noise.

Well they would have to build a whole house from scratch, that means no use of heavy tools but only with their hands. Imagine building a house only with your hands, even if its small carrying things to the waterfall would definitely attract the aliens. Also if i lived near a waterfall for a week i would get paranoid, the constant flow of the water stream would make you crazy, furthermore the spot where they could freely speak was underneath the waterfall, if you can build a house under the waterfall be my guest, for them to build a small house would be 50 feet away from the waterfall where the aliens can hear them

You make some good points. However, if the aliens avoid the waterfall due to the noise annoying them, would it not essentially generate a safe zone perimeter? If so, this would essentially create ample opportunity to build and fortify the area.
Yes thats true but Carrying building materials and tools to the waterfall would definitely mean death. Their farm house has crops, electricity defence mechanisms and many more useful stuff. I dont think going back and forth to the waterfall for 100+ times to build a house would be worth it. Also they had a pretty safe life for a year until that baby was born
Did anyone else realize that the creatures got around super well despite being blind? Every time they did, there face opened and they made clicking sounds so I’m pretty sure they use echolocation and that’s part of why they have such good hearing.

A possible plot hole that bothered me while watching it was that if the world found out that the creatures hunted by sound, why didn't any army try to use sonic weapons to combat the creatures?

Who says they haven't? This focuses on a family who has no contact with the outside world. There could very well be a group of survivors from the army who stopped the aliens in their area.
I mean if you are up against a create that can only detect sound and has heighten hearing sense you would think at least 1 person in the military would think "hey, maybe if we make a really really loud noise it would either hurt them or at the very least disorient them." It just seems like a common sense thing to me. Plus that shot gun didn't have any issues blowing through the things head. Are you telling me that not a single person shot one of these things while they had all their little flaps open trying to hear? I loved the movie but those are 2 things that seemed pretty obvious to me.

There were only 3 aliens in the area they lived in. The ending you see 4 aliens but really you saw 2 aliens per camera angles.

Mario Lopez because it wasn’t in pain from the girls hearing aid, it didn’t have the adrenaline I guess you could say. In the silo scene she uses her hearing aid to scare the creature away and in the truck she turned it off so it wasn’t trying to run away from something it was trying to find it.
Great movie, but your idea of them breeding here has no basis at all. But more importantly an Alien race without vision simply cannot travel through space. It's just a movie. But I would lean towards it's a genetically modified predator. Obviously alien, most likely used as a pre-invasion force by a higher function Alien race. Why risk your own species when you can use an effective predator. Think about it, makes sense to me.

Definitely would make sense. As well as a meteor but I like the idea of a predator like creature that has "dog" aliens to hunt everything for them before taking a planet over. Although I think this was just a horror movie with a bit of a twist to make viewers interested.

I don’t typically comment negatively on videos but this movie has so many other interesting points to explore and you are somehow primarily challenging things that the movie clarifies.

There was no evidence to prove they were bothered by it and it was an obvious warning sign to the rest of the family.

Krasinski’s character stated there were 3. They killed 1 and 2 came running. 3.

Sound is not an ISSUE for them- it’s their most well developed sense because it’s integral to their survival.
If we’re talking plot holes, why not mention the ease of living next to a waterfall? Or lining the walls with mattresses? Or even TESTING the sound proof room before it was necessary? How did the daughter know the rocket toy wasn’t making noise when she placed it at her brothers grave? And why didn’t she follow her own advice of remaining still in the silo?

She cut the wires that would make the noise, but also probably didn't care because she felt she was responsible for his death. The waterfall plot hole is actually explained in another video (I forgot the name of it), but basically living next to a waterfall would've been implausible for them.

A Quiet Place: This movie was, "Awesome." Also, I believe the "Lighting System," represented the Traffic Light. Red (Stop or Danger), Yellow (Slow or Caution) Green (Which wasn't seen. So, wasn't needed/or yet/plus safe). Plus, although they burly spoke the Family knew the Baby was due, any day. So the Switch to Red, was coincidental to danger, & labor pains. But because she was due, any day (&, it was night). The "Red" light system worked to signal the Fireworks to help cover her labor screams. Also did I mention, "This movie is, AWESOME.
I just watched this movie a couple days ago. Ive been thinking about all the different subtle things I saw and keep getting blown away by the simple cleverness. Like, they had no doors in either of the houses and their dinner "plates" were just giant dino kale leaves and they just ate with their fingers. The babies sound proof box was nerve racking too. I kept expecting the O2 mask to slip off in the box. And I didn't notice the red lights made noise, I thought it was their system to tell whoever left that day that there's an emergency. Very cool movie.

I don’t think there’s more than three creatures in the immediate “threatening” area to their farmhouse and here’s why:
1. The board says there are 3 in the area. Of course, people can be wrong. But the board was clearly an important exposition tool for the film. Considering that the filmmaking was done very carefully to avoid unimportant information and/or continuity errors, I think it’s pretty safe to assume that everything shown in this movie is shown because it is important. Meaning that they wouldn’t bring repeated focus to this “3 in the area” thing if it were leading untrue. That’s just bad filmmaking.
Also, in the final scene, only 2 more run by the security cams, after the one was killed. The mother and daughter appear newly confident in their ability to kill them. And I doubt they would exhibit this same confidence if they saw much more than 2 left in the area, especially not if they saw “‘many, many more”. They’re obviously very powerful creatures.
This is not to say that there aren’t more in the less-immediate area, such as the woods and the bridge area. I just don’t believe that there are more than 3 total on the farm. That would make a lot of the information the movie gives us pointless, and I believe it’s a better made movie than one that would give out pointless information.

Judy Ayala I’m not buying that. This movie took a lot of time to focus on important plot points with its direction. There was A LOT of focus on the “3 creatures in area” thing. A lot. A movie wouldn’t focus on that and then just forget about that. Couple that with the fact that you only saw a total of 3 in the area of the farm by the end of the film.
It wasn’t an accident. It doesn’t make any sense to think that there would be more. The white board said 3, the film showed 3, and the directing was very attentive to small details like this. I’m sticking with 3 confidently.
Yeah I agree they wouldn't focus on it if it wasn't important so there was only three inside the area where they lived and traveled not to mention if there was many others around then more than just 2 would be seen running towards the house after they heard a gunshot considering how loud it is and how sensitive they are to sound. Now there's no telling how many creatures there are outside of the confirmed area.
